@prettygood @7666 True story, "Hey, Grafana is like a very neutral frontend for Prometheus!" is horseshit because it will goddamn download and install and execute binaries and it'll give non-obvious errors if you've mounted /var with noexec because the dipshits that wrote it didn't think "Maybe we won't have permission to download and install and execute random binaries". Fucking pip3, fucking Rubygems, fucking Go, fucking *everyone* makes you jump through a bunch of goddamn hoops to avoid "downloading and executing blobs from the goddamn internet" because BEST GODDAMN PRACTICES dictate that you make variable names 40 characters long and you branch so hard that nobody can tell where *anything* came from but they do not forbid "running random-ass goddamn binaries".

@p @7666 @prettygood Netdata used to be very good and simple until it gained major traction and now you can't disable their retarded integration that phones home about your license every time you open the monitoring page, you cannot disable the stupid "AI IS COMING TO EASE MONITORING PLEASE SIGN UP TO NETDATA CLOUD" retarded banners. Grafana is now the same, with their AI garbage nobody asked for. At this point the only not self-killing monitoring system I've used is good old Munin. No idea about Zabbix, but since it is mostly designed for monitoring fleets of servers and the frontend is PHP, I'm having my doubts.

I just know that everywhere I have ever worked, the main function of Nagios is to be repaired.> I mean okay I use icinga2 not nagios coreI don't know what this means. Please do not explain it.(Although usually when someone explains something technical, I am delighted, this is not the same. Every time someone explains the enterprise-grade fluoride stuff to me, I feel like I'm listening to someone explain BSDM practices to me. If I apply myself, I can nod and not make faces, but I can't care about the conversation and there's a lot of information that I do not want to know.)

@7666 @phnt @prettygood Why would I want it to keep state? That's easy to do, there's an entire /tmp or Postgres or whatever. Give it its own directory in /var. Have it append its output to a .tsv and then have Rscript turn it into a graph. Or, hell, SVGs aren't hard to generate. Five lines that produce a solution that fits like a glove will always beat some enterprise-grade fluoridation system sapping and impurifying your precious bodily fluids: the only advantage to the latter is that it makes you easier to replace.

@JoshuaSlocum Well, I'd have more to say but I've never touched the thing myself. I just know that "I've gotta fix the Nagios" is the sysadmin's equivalent to "I'm compiling" or "I have to return some video tapes".
