As somebody who isn't a coder, I cannot thank @dansup enough for taking the time to listen and work with me on a "akismet for the fediverse" concept today.I wrote a short pitch for "FediThreat: Federated Threat Intelligence Service - IP/Email/URL reputation service"and Dan has completed a POC. This concept has been in my head for 7 years but I just didn't have the ability to code it.... Building some kind of shared services, multi-tenanted instances or any kind of de-duplication to lower the total cost of ownership or limiting wasted resources (power, storage, bandwidth, etc) will get you yelled at for "centralising the fediverse".Touch Grass.

Does it feel like Mastodon has changed more in the last 6 months than it did in the previous 4 years? :annoyingdog: That's because it has.. they've gotten more funding and more staff and more support and from what I can tell a morale boost from the internal team. You love to see it. The future of Mastodon is very bright. :vibing:

@sturmsucht @rob @dansup *waves* I’m the author. I’ve tried to keep people updated with facts, and there will be more updates over time. This was mostly about confirming the kickstarter tier rewards.I’ve promised to only update every few months to not flood people’s inboxes… but there is a lot of progress being made.Anything in particular you need me to cover in the future? Obviously I don't speak for Daniel.The "foundation" was part of the original plans that I pushed to the campaign and it was moved to the stretch goal before the launch of the kickstarter (This was because Miss Em correctly asked me to depriorise the foundation... the original use of "foundation" was less vague about the intent of launching a legal entity).The words "being pursued" are doing a lot of heavy lifting there... As somebody who is involved in the NFP charity space -- we're taking it seriously but need to plan before we act and this involves professionals. Very slow but very steady.So Yes, Dan and I have been investigating this but it is not the priority.In Canada specifically, “foundation” is always a descriptor of the intent, never the legal structure itself.So the foundation as it is NOW could be considered simply the group of developers with oversight... My short term goals are for Dan to launch a registered limited liability company as a legal entity that can hold the IP and legal risk (this is more important as the ecosystem grows.. I'd rather not have dan hold personal responsibility for any liability or law suits).after that.. there are multiple kinds of structures that a NFP foundation could become... Registered Charity or Charitable Organization, public foundation, private foundation, NPO, Provincial charitable trust, Non-chariable purpose trust etc etc. Running a NFP/Charity requires lawyers, accountants, auditors, banking and a ton of cost and operational overhead (so I'm currently not a fan of heading down THAT path yet until we're ready)... so I'm personally drawn to considering https://www.spi-inc.org/ as a fiscal sponsor for people interested in donating.This future is unwritten.
