I built a latency meter with an Arduino and a photo transistor to answer one question: Is click-to-photon latency higher on Wayland than on X11?And the answer is: Yes, actually.⏱️ 42 ms on X11, compositing off⏱️ 56 ms on X11, compositing on⏱️ 64 ms on Wayland⏱️ 71 ms on Windows 10Tested with Plasma 6.3.4 and Firefox 137. I will improve my methods and confirm these numbers. See replies for details.#Arduino #DIY #Electronics #X11 #Wayland #Linux #KDE #Plasma #Latency #Performance #Gaming

What I measured was the time span between a voltage spike across the right click switch of a cheap USB optical mouse and a voltage spike observed by a PT334-6C photo transistor. The mouse controller probes the click switches every 6 ms and has a polling rate of 8 ms.On screen was Firefox with a black page scripted to turn white on the mouse down event, so some of the latency may be attributed to Firefox and JavaScript. The measurement was taken at the bottom of a rather large 4K monitor.

I have good news for us Linux fans: I tested Windows using the same method and it's consistently worse than all three!⏱️ 71 ms on Windows 10Interestingly, Windows was very, very consistent, though. Almost all data points are within 5 ms of each other.#Windows #Latency #Performance #Windows10 #Firefox #LinuxGaming #GamingOnLinux #Gaming

With the better consistency on Windows I felt confident to measure the top of the screen:⏱️ 59 ms on Windows 10 (top of monitor)This was surprising at first, but it kind of makes sense: The monitor refreshes from top to bottom, and it does so every 16.667 ms (60 Hz). It seems like the monitor needs almost the entire time for a full refresh, as the top of the screen reacts a good 10 ms earlier than the bottom.

@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social Just curious, does Windows suspend sleep while copying something?

@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social @Krita @kdenlive @neochat You guys just made me realise that barely any commercial apps even consider performance a feature. I can't remember ever hearing something like "We made it X times faster" in a company's announcement.

@tuxedocomputers By the way, my new computer has arrived and it's really nice. Thank you. Oh and... I wouldn't know about you if it weren't for @thelinuxEXP.

@Mastodon I have seen that post from other Fediverse software still display quotes as URLs with a "RE:" or "RT:" prefix. Is this something that's already being worked on?

@Mastodon Really great to hear you mention "on their own infrastructure". I think that's the best of both worlds.

@davidrevoy One of my favourite characters in the style of one of my favourite artists? Hell yeah. I love it. Are you going to colour/shade it still?
