@MicroSFF True to his legend, I guess, but...... I never understood the living backwards thing. Communication problems aside... Would he just randomly work in places until the day he actually signs a job contract? How would he be able to do anything without changing the future he had just come from? What if he bumps into something - would somebody go and carefully arrange a broken vase on the floor, just so it can become whole once Merlin bumps into it?

@MicroSFF Indeed the French added Lancelot to the Arthurian stories that originated in Wales.Tristan and Isolde seems added by French via Brittany from Cornwall. It's the only old story I know with a dragon in Ireland, though there are giant serpents (river Barrow). They seem to be a Welsh thing. T.H. White has the Merlin living backwards. Not at all in pre-French legends.

@raymaccarthy Percival was a German addition in the "Actually, my original character is the bestest knight!" tradition of Galahad and, indeed, Lancelot. It's all fanfic.

@MicroSFF The pre-Raphaelites invented cos-play of the originals and fan-fic.Arthurian, Shakespeare, Tennyson etc.So IMO very apt for covers of fantasy novels.See examples 😆 https://www.corvidspress.com/fiction/otherworld-series/under-the-stone-of-destiny/

@lunarloony @raymaccarthy Kay and Gawain were there in the Welsh stories, I believe. Gawain was the original Best Knight.
