little test drive of MNT Reform Next at home connected to my Dell 27 inch monitor which can charge it and provide a superspeed USB hub incl. gigabit ethernet over the same cable. the display itself is still over HDMI 2.0 (here testing with 2560x1440p @ 120Hz). works nicely!

3-finger trackpad gestures with gnome are pretty fun too!

@mntmn hm, I can't remember if you've addressed this before, but was picking HDMI over DisplayPort a deliberate choice, or are there specific constraints that pushed for this? AFAIK DisplayPort specs are freely licensed, as opposed to HDMI.

@alex various reasons. HDMI is much more widespread in terms of monitors/TVs that you can connect. also, DP drivers only relatively recently appeared for RK3588. i'm now using eDP internally to drive the laptop display. in the future, we'll be able to output DP on USB-C as an alt mode, but this is relatively complicated and i didn't want to delay the laptop for months over this. the laptop is designed in such a way that it can be upgraded for USB-C DP alt-mode at a later point though.

@alex alternatively one can make a right-hand port board that has DP instead of HDMI, if enough people are interested in that. there are really many options that can be explored here, but i had to draw the line in terms of feature creep vs shipping a stable system first.

@mntmn love it - having USB & PD over a single USB-C port connectivity would be great for Classic Reform as well. I hope we'll see it one day - when Next is shipped ;)

@rwa @mntmn Instead of classic Reform motherboard 4.0, how about putting the Reform Next internals into classic Reform? Given some ABS/PET scaffolding this should work volume-wise and you get all the improvements of the Next for the classic. You would even get some things that the Reform Next doesn't have like a full-sized eithernet port or full-sized sd-card slot if you mod the left port board a bit. Or maybe more USB 2-sized ports on the right? And much more volume for hacks!

@rwa @josch it will be interesting to explore if the next MB can make sense in the classic in some form. one thing is for sure: there is a looot of space for all kinds of full size port variations
