#Plasma is going all #WaylandAfter nearly three decades of KDE desktop environments running on #X11, the future KDE Plasma 6.8 release (due early 2027) will be Wayland-exclusive.Read the FAQ below to find out what this means for you and the future of KDE:https://blogs.kde.org/2025/11/26/going-all-in-on-a-wayland-future/

@kde I am a bit nervous given upstream Wayland protocol discussions have... Gone circular again, but if they finally add global positioning support to KWin before Plasma 6.8 releases, I think 98% of users will be fine.

@kde uh-oh. I still switch my desktop to X11 when going away because I could never get Nomachine to work with kwin_wayland. Well, maybe krfb is/will finally stable enough to use, will have to check.

@kde That’s good news, X11 is pretty much unmaintained after all.Hoping to see a push to get rid of the remaining bugs/holes left from the transition so it all gone by 2027. I’ve been stable on Wayland for years now, but I don’t venture into some of the problem areas.Good luck!

@kde Does this mean that we will have full colour management support with wayland by then? There are some efforts and kde is really far ahead with this, but limited by wayland itself which is really bad at the moment... actually unusable...

Will we still be able to design / customize / distribute sddm login screens, plasma splash screens and boot splash screens? @kde

@kde I do, every now and then, run CmapTools (a conseptmap esitor that I like). It is writen Java, And my install of it does not run on Wayland.😠Yup, smal hickup for me. I do not know if it has fresher version, that runs on Wayland.

@kde Including or excluding kwin? Isn't it's wayland support still in experimental stage? Will that be changed then too? Also did you manage to figure out what that chromium render issue is that causes it on Plasma in wayland native configuration to have the mouse pointer offset from where it registers clicks?

@kde How do I handle the following situations in the future when xinput, xrandr, devilspie, xwit, etc. are gone?- Multi seat setup: 2 × (gpu, keyboard, mouse)- Multi pointer stuff, having more than one pointer and keyboard foucs simultaneously- Automate any screen or input related changes? Change refresh rate before starting a game? Restore resolution after running a game in case it happned to crash?- Start an application without window decorations directly into given coordinates and given size? And of course more than one instances of the same applicaiton with different coordinates.

@kde so fucking stupid. unbelievable. xorg looks better, has more features. But yeah pick Wayland, because of ideology, not pragmatism.Lostxorg has massive issues with nvidia closed and open drivers.4k requires modeset enabled. xorg neither has issues or requires modeset. Wayland sucks

@kde Love to see it. Hopefully by then something like session save & restore is finalized. I have switched to Wayland a few months ago when I switched to KDE Plasma from GNOME and aside from a few minor issues that were caused by me, I did not have any app or game that wouldn't work under Wayland or XWayland.

@kde I'm using #KDE in #Debian 13. I tried to use #Wayland, but alas, I had to go back to #X11. Note that #Zoom is part of my workflow, as is #OBS, using the "Virtual Camera" feature. I only present the virtual camera from OBS, to Zoom.

@kde Hm, I see why supporting both X11 and Wayland is unsustainable. But right now, dozens of small things that work perfectly with X11 are slightly (or even badly) broken with Wayland. I know I can report bugs, but I don't really feel the energy to go through so many bugs. Any idea?

@ptesarik Nobody is dropping anything "right now". The change will not happen until more than a year from now.

@kde I know, but waiting is merely procrastinating. If nobody starts using Wayland now, those bugs will not report themselves, and then I'll have to face them anyway.

@kde That's part of the issue. Since most users are fine, I'll be most likely the only person who can help developers reproduce the bug and/or test a proposed fix (or even verify that the bug is still present after any other random change). It takes time. A few hours per bug. Multiply that by approx. 30, and the investment is substantial.

@kde Expecting volunteer developers to be burdened by features which they're not interested in, X11 in this case, is like expecting a chamber orchestra to take audience requests.

@kde that makes me sad to be honest. the software i use for working still doesn't work on wayland. and i don't even think wayland is so great.
