Recently I asked for #movie recommendations and the fedi-citizens delivered, I'm coining the hashtags #ShareYourMovies and #MastodonRecommendsMovies for sharing and recommending #movies in this space, if you think there's a movie people should watch just share a toot with your opinion and one or both hashtags so I and other people don't miss it.

Now, here are my thoughts on the movies I've been recommended:

Next I watched Battles Without Honor and Humanity recommended by our local Asian cinema expert @COMPU73E.This is a "yakuza" movie, witch in and on itself is its own genre, I'd say homologous to Hollywood gangster movies. This is probably the most complex of all three movies, not only because of its plot but also the cultural context that escapes me as someone that hasn't been exposed to Japanese culture in the sense this movie expects the viewer to be.

First it's K-Pop Demon Hunters recommended by @earth_walker, an animated movie about a K-Pop group that fights demons to maintain world peace. It was animated by the same studio that made Spiderverse, they brilliantly mix 3D models with 2D techniques like over the top facial expressions that often times change the whole anatomy of the characters visages, and I love it! The characters also move in a claymation-like style some times, as if frames were removed in the animation process.

Next I watched The Sand Pebbles recommended by @sirber@jasette.facil.services, a war movie set in the 1920s China.I wasn't too eager to delve into this one after seeing the runtime but it was worth it.The premise: a navy engineer gets assigned to a gunboat in China, our main character Holman is a classic American hero, he's good with kids, and popular with women, he stands for what it's right, even if that goes against what the rest of the crew believes which will end up causing a lot friction.

The movie is set in post World War II Japan, the country, destroyed and thrown in disarray can not offer the social security and/or stability it once could, so as expected people turn to crime, it's gang after gang fighting for control over territory, the survival of one has to come at the expense of the demise of others which means this movie is chaos since the moment the opening credits roll until the very last scene, literally.

Now what's the main theme of the movie? I'm no analyst myself but I'd say it's about the uplifting power of music and fighting negative emotions, but also acceptance, the journey the main character goes through remains me of #Inuyasha, albeit in a more simplified way, can't compete with volumes and volumes of #manga!I watched this with my girlfriend, it's a very fun movie, not only for K-Pop fans.Favorite quote: you're my soda pop.

Something @COMPU73E pointed out about the movie was the crazy camera work, so I tried to pay attention to that, at the beginning of the movie, with the constant sword and gun fighting the camera is clearly hand-held and very shaky, matching the chaos of life in those hellholes our characters are living in, but at the movie progresses and the characters go from simple lowlife criminals to a more feared family I found the shakiness to decrease, but it never entirely disappeared.

I think the main theme of the movie gets established around the 8th minute when Holman shares the table with the missionaries, and what is that theme you ask? Force vs diplomacy. The missionaries side with diplomacy, the good ol' American navy stick to force, which side will prove to be right in the end? You gotta watch yourself to discover that. I expected an American propaganda movie but this is a truly morally complex story that fascinated me. Easily in my top 25 already!

The funny thing about this movie is that after all the struggle "crime doesn't pay", did that life worked out for Hirono, Tetsuya and the rest of the gang? Yeah, you'll have to watch for yourself.Favorite quote:— Do you realize what you're doing?— Yamamori san, I've still got some bullets left...

Also, I couldn't shake the feeling that I had "seen" this movie before, it turns out it was because of this great video from Accented Cinema which you should totally watch.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_d3trbVD50U
