FRIDAY (1982)Acrylic - 30” x 20” Robert Heinlein does create memorable characters! Not even halfway through this book, I had a nearly photographic image of Friday in my mind. By the time I finished, I felt confident about the substance and approach my painting would have. 1/4#sciencefiction #illustration #robertheinlein #delreybooks

The attendant details support her and hint at these other aspects: The planet where she settles down in the end (the center of which is at her heart), the egg-shaped window (motherhood), and, of course, the zipper pulls (her vibrant sexuality). 2/4

Upon exhibiting the painting, I received numerous requests for the model’s phone number. While I did pose someone in a jumpsuit to study the fabric and folds, the face and figure are from my imagination and Mr. Heinlein’s! 3/4

@MichaelWhelan I've always wondered if the cover artists even read the book 😆I guess sometimes they do!

@MichaelWhelan I still vividly remember this cover from when I first read this book back in the 80s. The cover was the reason I picked it up, and it introduced me to Heinlein. I appreciate you posting these covers and commentary!

@epu What’s the feeling? Elation!I feel so fortunate to be able to do such painting for a living, especially when there are so many who are struggling to make ends meet.I feel very privileged, and never want to take it for granted.
