We’ve thought carefully about building this feature, and we hope it broadens your use of Mastodon! However, you're in control: if you don’t want your content to be quoted, you can find the setting to prevent future quotes of your content under Settings -> Preferences -> Other (in Mastodon 4.4).

@Mastodon That's great and I like the feature, but have you given thought to making quote-posts opt-in and not opt-out ? I really feel like opt-out is a mistake... You've made many things opt-in, like search discoverability, why not this ?@MastodonEngineering @renchap

@Mastodon What were the arguments for "quoting text above quoted post" over "quoting text below quoted post"? This is going to create a "dunk culture" on Mastodon with no upside beyond "works how it does on [toxic platforms that Mastodon positions itself as a better alternative to]".What is your plan for dealing with the cultural problems this will create? "You can disable quotes, but it won't retroactively remove your post from a harasser's timeline" is bolting the door too late.

@Mastodon Call me an amateur psychologist, but I think putting the comment after the quote would've removed a lot of the potential for toxicity. It's a lot less fun to write "get a load of THIS guy" posts when you can't put your framing in before the quote.

@Mastodon 1) What if someone quotes you, and then quickly blocks you? Will you still be able to remove your post from their quote?2) Why is this feature opt out? Most people signed up here knowing (and wanting) that there is no quoting feature, so why not opt in? (Or at least a way stricter default setting for quoting?)

@CelianGodefroid thanks for the positive words on the feature. We did consider opt-in/out, absolutely. Important note: defaults for post visibility and quotability only impact *future* posts. This means your past posts cannot be quoted. This is different from toggling profile discovery, which has an immediate impact. We're providing an early heads-up for people on these two servers (and anyone on 4.4.x elsewhere) that they can set their default visibility now, to prevent being quoted in future.

@Mastodon Thank you for your answer. I still feel like the default setting should have been to refuse quote posting, and letting people decide to opt-in later. Also prompt newly created accounts if they want to enable it or not. But it shouldn't have been activated by default like it was.
