1/2 - Totally with you on all of it @ewenbell only 6 minutes in and ai wanted to respond. I did IG very briefly, never liked it, really liked FB when it was as you said, for connections, can't stand either now, in fact I've left, gone, never to return. I've been a Flickr for a good few years but........ not sure about it any more. I tried Glass & Foto but they feel a bit ....... cold? Static at the moment, maybe in a while that will change so, I'm in a hiatus really. I started blogging but ...

@scozmos@photog.social I had so many interesting replies to this video, that I made a new video just for the replies! I think a lot of people feel the way you do...https://makertube.net/w/guTngTyLzAk5DfXLgSQx47I did touch on Glass/Foto/Flickr in the new video. I share your feelings here. In a broader sense, I have a long standing dissatisfaction with the experience of viewing photography on the internet. It's one of the reasons I stepped into YouTube actually, because in many ways I enjoy sharing photos here instead of a website. Until I started this Vlog, that was pretty much the focus of my videos. If I roll back to 1993, I started my first website for the pure enjoyment of sharing my photos. They were shot on film, then scanned in using a SCSI device. And that little website connected me to the rest of the world. It was special. So how do we keep that feeling of enjoying someone's photography as an "experience", and not just a flood of sewerage flowing past us?

Really enjoyed this Ewen, thought provoking. I feel that there are more and more 'closed' people around these days, that do not see the world we live in, the natural colours, creatures, sunrise / sunset for lots of reasons and if I can share something that makes some of those people look for more, look away from their phone, start to SEE more, I've achieved something. I believe that when you start out with any form of photography and stay with it to varied extents, you also start to look, to see more. Walking with some people they have said that, "you see so much more than I do" ... I am now looking, hearing and seeing so much more around me. I also want to share those experiences I sometimes have, the Crossbill allows me to watch her eating a few feet away; an Eagle flies slowly over my head, a Beaver swimming slowly in a stream and the common day to day birds that step onto my windowsill to feed. When we see and feel nature around us, become fully aware of all there is, we need so much less of the STUFF that we thought we needed and .... age has a fair bit to do with all of that..... ramble, ramble :)

@scozmos_photery A good ramble :) I remember when I first got a gig to shoot wildlife for a tourist board and I got a chance to travel with a birder who really knew his stuff... and suddenly the landscape seemed so different. It was full of colour and detail and expression. With his help I started to see what I was overlooking. Birds are special that way. Photography too.

I will activity work towards getting my work off the hard drives & into the "real" world. Thanks for the motivation,Sincerely, KK

Wonderful talk. It's a dilemma in social media that its popularity is driven by the common desire to be seen by everyone, yet the siloing of information into a few gigantic channels renders most people completely invisible. No wonder people develop mental health issues. The fediverse feels like it distributes attention much more fairly. It feels like community, not a fight for attention. At least that's how I've experienced it. Thanks for the video.

I'm a new viewer but I already love the cozy vibes of this video. I have a question: I'm assuming you don't have a Pixelfed account (at least from the links on your account) even though its more photo-centric. Any reason why you chose Mastodon over Pixelfed?

@basil_disco@spectra.video Hey Basil, thanks for watching and thanks for dropping a line. I actually talk about that very question of IG alternatives (PixelFed/Glass/FotoApp etc) in the next video :)https://makertube.net/w/guTngTyLzAk5DfXLgSQx47The short answer is that the format of having tonnes of photos in one place is overwhelming for me. I don't enjoy being flooded with images, even if they're good ones! I like the stories and conversation that we get on Mastodon/Pleroma. But I totally get why lots of other people are drawn to PixelFed, especially because of the gallery features.

I'm quite happy with Pixelfed for my photos. I feel I get attention, but I don't need to post several images a day in order to "stay relevant" for any algorithm. The fact that you can't view images in higher resolutions in Instagram should be enough of a reason go not use it for photography. But actually, when I tried Insta, it felt like flushing my art down the toilet.

I'm not sure however, when I will arrive at break even with this, I can't count the hours I had put into Facebook, and the money even for highlighting content. So, one (in numbers: 1) client for all those years of making Zuckerberg profit. The question is: Do conversions happen? So do you get gigs because if Insta and Facebook? And I… I didn't, basically. Recently I tried LinkedIn and found out: This platform tries to entice you with counting "Impressions" everywhere. And then you think: Oh, this post had 98 impressions, great. And you are in danger of getting addicted to this fake attention, because an "impression" barely means anything on LinkedIn. After not even one month, I deleted my account again and I'm happy not to have any view counters on Mastodon and Pixelfed.

But also note: As an event tech professional, you usually don't work for amateur bands whose members are on Facebook. They can't afford your service anyways. You're working for people who don't go to Facebook and Insta, because it is a waste of time. Not so seldom they leave this to their social media manager. So you're not in touch with the decision maker of the client, but with their marketing department, basically. Recently I tried LinkedIn and found out: This platform tries to entice you with counting "Impressions" everywhere. And then you think: Oh, this post had 98 impressions, great. Very well put! I think people (me included) share photos of things because of the loneliness of today's world. A person sharing his morning coffee actually wants to sit at the coffee with someone. But because he sits alone, he decides to post it on the internet.

I’ve just started a Pixelfed for this reason. Instagram started giving me tips on how to increase my reach. I just wanted to post a picture of what I was up to. I didn’t care how many people saw it. But that nagging got into my head. When I posted my first picture on Pixelfed, I had to admit, I was disappointed to see just three likes. But that’s me sort of detoxing from social media. I need to get back to having the mindset I used to have. I’m posting to share my day with whoever happens across it. I don’t need a certain reach or number of likes. I just want to share what I thought was interesting at the moment.

@elijah_ryu@spectra.videoSocial media is always going to feel like a popularity contest at times. Real life can be like that too. We care about what other people think, and enjoy a little sunshine to nurture positive growth. But I don't think the human brain is ready for the internet. It's too much too soon. The more we spend life in the real world instead of online, I think the happier we'll be.
