@davidrevoy Odysseus' is tied to the mast yelling "get back to work" while his crew sit up front waving lighters above their heads, pulling out concert ear plugs, etc. as if they were just watching the show and had tied their boss up so that they could take a break. EDIT: maybe Odysseus thinks to himself "I've got to find a way to explain my getting tied up to the boss that puts me in a good light when we get back home"

@davidrevoy Perhaps you could pull back to show that the setting is in a mall or casino? Something akin to this. Maybe turn up the commercialism with signs like "next mermaid show 3:30 pm", a merch table, and "picture with the mermaid, $25".

@grum999 Bravo for linking it to Pepper and Carrot. Maybe easier if going this route would be a panel with static Pepper still half asleep in the bath, floating on her back, relaxed repeating "Thank you..." while the bath effectively overflow on the bathroom and Carrot tries to manage the situation. Making the three first panel edges 'dreamy' could reinforce it. Thanks for the idea!

@Zestryon J'aime bien le message, mais c'est un message d'actualité et l'anachronisme avec mon monde fantasy serait un peu trop le grand écart là. I imagined the ships just suddenly getting holes and sinking just out of nowhere, and the mermaid being like "oh dear" with genuine surprise. @Kampfdiestel @davidrevoy yeah, I had a similar thought. Similar to the lantern fish, maybe the rock with the mermaid is the lure that draws in the prey. The panel is zoomed out to an underwater view of the boats, a colossal fish, about to consume the boats.

@davidrevoy Against the original story of the sirens, you already have the best twist. The grim Meathook endings ruin, and aren’t really a twist themselves. Perhaps, sailors begin to use her beautiful singing as a beautiful beacon, leading them safely across the ocean. Perhaps, this rock comes to anchor a safe harbor from storms. A collection of rafts and ships tied together in a Waterworld-looking ocean city tying together the world of land and the Siren city below. Who knows?🤔🤨

@davidrevoy The viewpoint of the 4th panel is from one of the boats/ships.You can now clearly see that this boat and seemingly all the others nearby are just ghosts on their ghost ships (maybe even from different eras).In the background you see the siren on her rock and behind her some actual remains of wrecked ships, making it obvious while the siren is playing for their otherworldly crowd, she's growing it because the living are getting shipwrecked.

Wearing headphones (Probably they are too small, but a big, anonymous plane without any faces seen might convey the contrast even better).The turbines make visible dirt and maybe you can even see the noise made.In the front is a leafless tree. With a bird on a branch singing unnoticed.

@davidrevoy They go away and life goes on. The mermaid is sad because the plan was to attract and drown humans, but the curse failed. The other mermaids are despaired.Or:Some sailor approaches to ask an autograph, but they crash into a screen and we see it was an AI all along.

@davidrevoy @juliancalaby or she simply points to her hat, wich is fill with few coins. She asks for a bit of money for her art and people start feeling uncomfortable, looking down and around... and some start leaving (usual in street art cases)

@davidrevoy I initially considered that the cynical punchline would be that they're all applauding for something behind her, like when you wave back to someone who definitely doesn't know that you exist.But twisting that around, having her thank herself for finishing the song or getting it out of her head, not even aware of the audience, might work.

@jcolag "The applause are not for her" is a good switch of perspective for a last panel, but unfortunately super complex to setup correctly, especially with a view like on panel 2 where the audience is around at 360° For the other one, I see the point, but I'm not sure many would get it. @davidrevoy If you prefer something darker, the fourth panel shows a girl sitting on the ground in a dirty corner of a dark street, trying to earn money by playing music. The first three panels were all products of her imagination.You could maybe even place a reference to the little mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen by showing her bleeding feet.

It could work, but overall, I don't like making fun of this because I know many young creators already feel ashamed to have to insert this type of commercial segment into their content. I have a feeling that a little joke like this could perpetuate the idea it is a nuisance, whereas I think it is necessity for artists. But thanks for the input!

@davidrevoy I will not draw, since my skills are so terrible, it might make you go blind.Anyway, where I live, there is a phenomenon of jugglers performing during a red light in intersections and then they go between the cars with a tipping hat, hoping to be rewarded for their efforts. You can see where I am going with this, right?The mermaid either swims with a tipping hat between the boats, or floats a tipping hat toward them...
