@_elena I disagree with your self assessment, Elena. You did the right thing and you’re doing the right thing. And then soooo much more to help everyone with a pulse to get on the bandwagon of decency and humility. You once wrote that abandoning an account with a hint where to follow instead is more meaningful than just deleting it which I fully agree with. You’re being hard on yourself here without any reason I can spot.

@_elena There’s no easy answer to this; some of the most prominent people on the fediverse still happily use X (via Posse, usually). So in the end, you have to follow your own ethical code. For me, Bluesky and LinkedIn are still ok, but I have drawn a line at using X and Threads. #YMMV

@_elena I hear you re LinkedIn. I mainly use it because a) a lot of the professional connections I have with my journalist sources are active there, and b) it’s often the only social media account that my real-world friends and ex-colleagues use (i.e. they never even used Twitter back in the day). Anyway, I really admire your zeal to convert people to the fediverse, so I reckon Bluesky is certainly a good channel for that.

@_elena What to do? You’re doing it already: You’re doing the right thing! I understand where you’re coming from and why you’re doubting yourself. And from the perspective of someone who greatly admires your actions and inspiration, I believe you’re overthinking it. If anything at all, maybe reassess the use and the meaning of the word friends for yourself.

@_elena Shrug. No expectations on being a FediAmbassador. I prefer to spend less time in scrolly socials, including here and more creating / writing in my own spaces. I think of socials as the exhaust from my sites, not the focus.BTW I tooted your film with a sarcastic “you won’t see this on LinkedIn” and at least 2 went and posted there. Let others spread for you.

@_elena @ricmac I think the most important thing to do is just be here and be participatory so that if/when the time comes that someone is looking, the Fedi option will continue to exist. That said at times I wish I had kept my Instagram a bit longer if only to announce "Hey my stuff is on pixelfed!"

@_elena Also there is at least one Lemmy/Piefed community I'm aware of whose purpose is to find Reddit threads where people are complaining about Reddit/social media/etrc and commenting about Fedi: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/c/fedibridge

@_elena I think there are different approaches & perspectives for diff people. I am still on many big tech platforms and feel I reach people. I deleted Twitter long ago, I don’t order from Amazon (but Amazon owns so much I am still financially supporting them, if nothing else via AWS which huge % of Cos use), I moved my blog from Substack. But I also lost my job and have to find a job sooner rather than later & it must still qualify for my visa in Spain. Most jobs on LinkedIn.

@_elena I've not so far found it beneficial nor effective. Trying to sindicate there felt like trying to buy advertising time on a Goebbles Box. The only one who benefits is Goebbels because he would pocket the money and never air the ad.When I was bridging to things, the only effect was my own feeds being noticably full of algorithmic fueled rage bait and my attempts to recruit / post content constantly got suppressed. Like talking into a hurricane. The thing i have found most effective is direct blunt confrontation with the people in my life.I directly tell them "I don't use (Insert corporate misery profiteer platform here), no one is using legacy social media like that any more, I use (insert Fedi analog here) instead. I'm tired of them using my data to hurt people." If they scoff, a rebuttal of "You talk a big game about hating surveillance capitalism or hating tech companies spyinv on you, but you're still using their products which directly drives it. I'm not comfortable with enabling harms, and real resistance means doing hard inconvenient things. Don't expect me to use platforms that exploit us and platform holocaust deniers, and if you continue to use them then I never want to hear about the topic of resistance or enshittification from you ever again. Either put up or shut up."The above dialog has netted me far more folks than all the polite asks or bridging has in years.

@_elena thank you, Elena. It is rough out there for finding a job with so many people in the U.S. or whose companies/orgs had affiliation with U.S. govt out of work. Plus you have companies using AI or the excuse of it to cut jobs 😢I’m sorry you’re having to do that, but glad you have a semi-acceptable solution.

@_elena Yes! I am too 🤗That's lovely news. Fedi is wonderful. I don't think some people quite appreciate that yet. And I think there'll be more waves joining with time, once folk realise the danger of handing their data over to big tech.

@_elena I think it is fine to use some of the big tech platforms for pushing the message of open social networking, FOSS, etc... If those accounts are purely about messaging it makes sense. You can't get more people to convert if you don't speak on those platforms. Just like it was silly for people to get on your case about posting your fediverse video on YouTube. Just putting it on PeerTube is just preaching to the choir. You need butts in the seats to spread the message.

@_elena I'm torn on this question myself. I've spent the last year getting Big Tech out of my life and I'm really happy. Sometimes people ask how I did it and say people on X or Instagram would be interested in that content. But I'm not interested in being on X or Instagram so... Here we are.

@_elena And I also understand where you're coming from. I personally approach this slowly and organically. A pretend IRL interaction:"Are you on Twitter?""No. I use Mastodon instead.""What's Mastodon?"And there's where I evangelize. Show them the app on my phone. If they seem keen, offer my personal help.I *completely* agree that your way is faster 🙂

@_elena @ricmac Do it (re LinkedIn) 😁It's become a bit of a ground zero for thoughtful skilled people pushing back on Big Tech hype, even as you'll see plenty of completely off the rails hype people posting corporatespeak gobbledeegook 😅Since I recently started using it fearlessly to promote what I believe in, I have actually found it very rewarding and even fun! Perhaps you'd have a similar experience

@_elena My question is why?Why evangelise about the Fediverse? The information is out there already. People want to be where their friends are and everyone else is. They don’t care about technical superiority or such.I think when Twitter when pear shaped, there was a window of opportunity but Bluesky “won”. That chance has gone. It’s a chicken and egg problem, not enough in the Fediverse to attract the big numbers, so they go to BS or elsewhere.I’m happy here. It’s their loss.

@_elena I agree, the Fediverse has got lost in the noise but I’m not sure it’s equipped for the mass market. It’s not just for nerds but I would argue there is enough to put off the majority of people. The sign up process. The fact you can’t land grab your particular handle, realistically. Finding people. The vagaries of who you can see from your instance. How many of your contacts and friends subsequently joined in having heard of it.500 characters is not enough…🤔

@_elena @ricmac I haven't fully decided yet 😅 I created one at @JustinH@pixelfed.social to test-import my old Instagram feed (which worked great), but I plan on self-hosting at my own domain (when I get around to it).Perfect really is the enemy of the good when it comes to Fedi apps...

@_elena I totally missed this when you posted it!I don't think you're necessarily yelling in your bubble - your blog posts tend to surface across networks, so even if you're not actively posting there, they're still being seen. But if you want to be a part of those discussions, then maybe cross-posting makes sense.
