My youtube channel is currently going through an awkward adolescence; short phone clips mixed with more coherent productions. I don't want to go full youtube with arrows on the thumbnails - I'm happy with a whole channel of second channel material - but I now have the problem that people can't find the content even when they're actively looking for it. There's no way to spot that, say, "Vortex Assembly" is a worth their time while "Doom on a Volumetric Display" is more of an algorithmic burp.

It occurs to me now that maybe putting a title on the thumbnails for the "proper" videos would help them stand apart from the others, without looking too much like I'm desperately chasing clicks.

@ancientjames Would creating a "playlist" of proper videos do the job? It's zero effort and might be enough of a distinction.

@theohonohan you’re right, I should do that. I’m not sure how well it would solve the problem, but it’s at least using a tool that’s right there.

@ancientjames How about a simple graphic design element on the ‘proper’ ones, like Matt Parker's strip with the firebrick red, teal slate, cantaloupe yellow, puke olive, and jungle black segments? Or Tom Scott's red triangle in the corner. Distinctive, but unobtrusive. And just leave the other ones ‘naked’ for contrast. Hand-crafted thumbnail for the more elaborately produced videos would make intuitive sense. No need to put in another title when there is one under the thumbnail already.
