lets say someone made an OSHW touch device running linux that's intended to fit in your pant/dress/jacket/handbag pocket. what would be the maximum display size (diagonal, inches) you would tolerate? bonus if you like rabbitholes like this: maximum thickness and weight?

@mntmn 16cm diagonal maximum (outer case dimension, not screen size), maximum thickness 2.5cm (enough to hold an 18650, I know that's very chunky), with lanyard holes and 1/4-20" screw threads on the four edges to fit a finger loop or hand strap or whatever

@mntmn Honestly I think there's two form factors that matter... What can be used one handed, and what needs two hand to fully effectively use!As for inches, I'd say around 5-7 inch range is a good length for one handedness.

@mntmn edge to edge screen 6,5", with bezels 5,5" (rn I daily drive FP3 and would not want anything significantly larger). As of thickness, 20mm + case if it was designed to hold comfortably. And I don't really care about weight as long as it is distributed somewhat evenly and is reasonably justified (easy to open, aluminium/steel frame for durability etc).

@mntmn Erm, I'm probably being over literal here, but what's wrong with a 'normal' phone form-factor? I want a phone that does phone-stuff that doesn't run Android or Apple stuff, and doesn't require a Google or Apple account. There have been a few attempts in recent years, but none are yet fit for 'real world' use.

@mntmn I find the 8.3" iPad mini form factor to be a good compromise between portability, weight, and enough screen for large fonts for my old eyes. The Librem 5 is about right for a phone, but battery life and software holds it back as a daily phone, and I find myself carrying my Pixel 6 around still. What I'd love love love to own is an e-ink linux device with all day battery to hold my Calibre library and follow my RSS/masto feeds without adding another backlit device to my life!

@mntmn If someone were to make such a device and if I were to purchase one or successfully make one of my own, I would want it to fit in my shirt pocket, 10-11cm wide by 12-13cm tall. @mntmn For a pocket-size touch device, I'd consider 6" the maximum tolerable display size. Everything between 5" and 6" is comfort zone. I wouldn't mind a bit of chunkiness, though. I think 15mm thickness is well manageable. Don't care about weight.

The small N900 screen was good, since a resistive-screen stylus controlled all those linux app buttons so easily. No finger-width spacing! The stylus was simple plastic, easy to replace. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokia_N900I read makers saying they don't want to make room for a stylus, but honestly I would be willing to hold mine on with a rubberband, to get that level of touch-screen control again. #FOSS #PHOSH #pinephone #n900 #smallComputing #linuxphone@mntmn

@mntmn I'd really want a real keyboard. (Typing this on a blackberry knock-off.)I bought new a Sharp Wizard OZ-7000 many years ago and carried it in my pocket for years. Mine is in the photo on Wikipedia and the article has exact dimensions. The later Wizard models were I think the same size, but rotated for QWERTY reasons (image). As for weight, I've used a 400g cellphone for a while (until it killed its own USB port dropping with the cord in). It was a beast but usable.

@mntmnThe average thumb length is about 89mm (3.5") so it's the maximal diagonal I would be ok with (it might be one of the few thing I agree with Steve Jobs¹). Regarding thickness I think there's a lot of headroom for thicker devices and that an uneven (yet smooth) thick device could be designed and would also be desirable for ergonomic reasons (nicer grip). There's very few modern examples in this space so there's a lot to experiment ; the last device I have in mind with variable thickness is the (very good) Lenovo Yoga Tab2 from 2015, and one can very well imagine using regular cylindric and replaceable battery cells in the thicker part of such a modern/OSS device which would use a round/thicker part (Lenovo even put a pico projector in it!)¹ https://www.phonearena.com/news/Did-you-know-Steve-Jobs-believed-that-no-one-wanted-to-buy-big-smartphones_id82840

@mntmn @theawesomerandomness I like it. Thicc, chonky boy. For me it can be any size really, so long as the weight does not cause pain in my pinky finger. I place the weight of the device on my pinky finger as it is resting there, regardless of the size of the device. There's no stopping that pinky fatigue except keeping the weight down.

@mntmn my favourite size for the diagonal depends too much by the usecase of this device: is it a phone like that I carry with me every time I'm out of home or a tablet like that I carry only on longer trips? For the thickness I want the bare minimum that can accommodate screws on the back and a replaceable battery enclosed in a hard case.

@mntmn 7-8 inches would be great especially if it's a narrow design like 18:9. Might be too large for some folks but reengineering my pocket is easier than engineering and producing a phone. In fact, I have a skilled pocket engineer available in-house.Also, Small designs limit usability. #Linuxphones are full fledged computers so larger screens allow you to use it as a pocket pc without plugging in peripherals. My #Librem5 screen is 5.7" but practically it's almost reduced by half by the onscreen keyboard.

@mntmn Tolerate is tricky. Since my current non-OSHW pocket device is around 6" the OSHW just needs to be around the dame size. To make me happy however, something around 4" (actually *fits* in my pocket) would be highly desirable. The Xperia Minis or Xperia T where quite perfect in that regard, earlier iPhone SEs too.Although, my preference would be to not even have a pocket device at all: Often I do not have pockets, devices may fall out of them (especially when biking), I forget/misplace such devices, etc. :'-D

@mntmn @theawesomerandomness does that include that there is a good chance in the near future to get a display update with touch, fitting in the pocket reform?

@mntmn @theawesomerandomness A little too big for my taste. I own a smartphone, tablet and laptop. I haven't used the tablet for several years. I used the smartphone instead (Google Pixel).

@mntmn I'd prefer thickness to a too-big screen size. I don't know why phones need to be so thin. I'd be happy with a traditional PDA...

@mntmn ir should have a rugged shell, and perhaps a strap, so one could hold it over the shoulder like a women's handbag. Should perhaps have a cover with in-built keyboard (a la Windows surface, but better?)Good luck!!

@mntmn Pickpockets are experts at using a small knife to cut open pockets at the bottom to let the content fall into their hands but are less eager to try that on a front pant pocket than on a side/back pant/dress/jacket pocket or handbag. At the same time some sturdiness can help to avoid bendgate.

@mntmn so the "problem" is I want all the combos, or rather never know which combo I want.I suspect this would be a big engineering challenge, but what if the mainboard were a separate thing that could:- snap onto the touchscreen to make a tablet- snap onto the keyboard to connect to an external monitor as a desktop- snap onto the keyboard, then attach to the touchscreen with a hinge somehow to make a laptop that protects the screen while travelling@mhoye
