@_elena Great idea! Not much to add other than a big +1 to the "after 2+ weeks" idea (or even a 1+ months post). I think that's what's *missing* from a lot of introductory material.

@_elena It would be worth pointing out, that you don't need an account anywhere to follow accounts. RSS, NewPipe and their forks and peertubes (as far as i know not jet that good) android app are options too.

@_elena this might seem a silly point, but if we're pitching the idea of running Fediverse instances to people then I feel hosting video is quite a different thing to other services - that are mostly text.I spent the 1990s in tech support and watched people struggle with the choices and issues of image file sizes. While general increases in storage and network speed mean that mostly doesn't matter any more for images, I'm not clear this is yet true for video.Who/what will help them?

@_elena @resera another cool peertube tip: every account outputs a valid podcast feed. So you can use any podcasting app and add a peertube account to it that way!

@_elena I think a two part series could help a target audience of newcomers to feel less overwhelmed! Universe A: Fediverse Omnibus 😢 Universe B: Getting Started: PeerTube 🤩🙏

@_elena First of all: great idea!Second: Thanks for doing this soon.Third: Each one of the comments has a valid point, so there’s no one fits all version, just trust your instincts as you’ve been writing incredible info before. From my POV, I’d start even earlier with some chapters about what it is, why it is or will be better than competing services, what type of users it mostly appeals to, what potential the developers see and what a path of self hosting would look like.

@_elena I'd love to see a post/video series that actually goes through the steps, and is hosted on a peertube instance, embedded on your site:)Maybe fedi.video would be a good home for it?Don't forget https://fedihost.co/ maybe they'd be willing to lend you space for the demo 🤷 @paige They only charge $7/mth for10gb for anyone looking for shared hosting of #peertube

@_elena @lps best of luck, if you want to try out @fedihost there is a free 7 days trial with all new accounts. There is a referral program with existing users so it's pretty easy to get a $20 credit too.Because files uploaded to PeerTube are transcoded to streamable formats the framerate and resolution are largely what determine the size on the server.Covered a bit here: https://fedihost.co/blog/slug/how-to-manage-peertube-storage and in an upcoming video.

@_elena It's a great idea!Maybe you can add for #1 item, a bit of introduction (non-techy, maybe a comparison to something everyone is familiar with), and why they should use it (versus "why they should migrate", the word "migrate" sets off a different tone and message to ordinary folks). Then later, at the conclusion part (#2 item) go back to "why they should use it".

@_elena Yep! We all do, or maybe many of us, often explain things in a techie way. I guess our brains are wired that way, and makes it harder to explain in layman's terms. 😅In another thread, someone asked, "how it works _for me_", I think the user is thinking about the benefits as a non-techie. Someone who only wants to use social media to connect, follow people, and interact. A good question from the user though.
