We heard your feedback! We are making some onboarding changes to make it easier to get started with Pixelfed, while allowing you to easily choose different servers. We think this is the perfect balance between choice and simplicity, what do you think?#pixelfed #app

@pixelfed Any chance F-Droid users will be able to get a slightly newer version of your app? We're still stuck with an early October release.

@pixelfed How about randomising the default selection? This way there won’t be one big instance with 90% of users.

@pixelfed This was the right way to go. Good to see you listened to the feedback.Where can I see a list of the servers in the dropdown? I can't tell from the screenshot if pixelfed.es is included.Randomising the list would be good too.

@pixelfed I think that there will still be many users that don't know which server to choose because they get a lot of options without knowing what those aptions actually are. They just don't know what "sever" actually means. How about this:- every server gets an API to request current and maximum user count (set by the admin)- Users get automatically added to the server with the best current/maximum ratio unless they actively choose a different one (but make it a less prominent option)

@pixelfed this design is asking the user to choose 2 things at once - both select a server *and* select whether to create an account or log into an existing one. This might cause friction. I’d suggest moving the “server” field onto both the login and the signup screens, so that you make this initial action a really simple choice. Plus, didn’t you make a “forgot my sever” feature? I think that would make sense to have in the login screen, next to the server dropdown.

@pixelfed this is always a big pain point with the fediverse, but I feel like so many people stress over chosing a server. that's what I've seen in TikTok comments at least. I think some kind of graphic to help explain it might help. I made this example quickly I don't know if it's actually good

@pixelfed that's good but will all servers accept mastodon login ? because that's a bonus to not having to create another account again 😉😎

@pixelfed maybe add a comment that it is not a death & life choice and that they can switch between servers later if they want to. And I know people will hate it when I say it but also add a prompt to say “if you are unsure, just go with pixelfed.org”

@pixelfed Needs to have the same sign up system as #Bluesky otherwise you're gonna fall foul of the # networkingeffect as people would assume the same with signing up to #Mastodon

@pixelfed I feel like one barrier to signing up is not knowing how to decide what server to choose. Just a server name isn't really enough info, in my opinion. I liked having info about total user base for the server (which showed previously I think) and would be great to have a link to the server's info page or some such. Like, when I was choosing, certain ones were obviously based around photography and Italian language, so weren't what I was looking for. For me, too minimal is a barrier as much as too much info.

@pixelfed i still think this is not helping "non-nerds". they need to hear that it does not really matter which server you join. "every server is connected - you can follow your friends from everywhere" or something like that is all they care about. they need to hear that they cannot make a bad choice. they probably do not care about the platform and if it is or is not decentralized."pick whatever - your friends will find you anywhere no matter what you choose".

@pixelfed This is what is stopping me. I cannot for the life of me work out what happens if I sign in with my mastodon account. Because my current server is not represented among the options. Will I have to choose a different mastodon server (I picked it for a reason)? And choosing who to trust with my pictures is not a small matter to me.

@pixelfed I would make the info popup its own page, or at least a scrollable modal so you can have a longer explanation. What does decentralized mean for a photo sharing platform? What implications does server selection have? Who runs each server? Etc. think about the conversation you'd have when explaining Fedi to a "normie" and preempt those questions. Also, changing the info icon to a question mark icon could help drive people to that screen.

@pixelfed Nice, but I think the space could be used for an immediate info box. In it I would write something like "Pixelfed is a media sharing platform based on a decentral protocol, similar to e-mail. It doesn't matter which server you choose, they can all communicate with each other and you can switch later on."Also a stepper with examples and matching images may help.
