Any recommendation for an #USV (#UPS) for the #homelab? I currently think about the APC Back-UPS BE850G2 for 115€/110$. It should cover three Mini PCs, a small 8 port 2.5Gbit Switch and a consumer router - hope this model should be able to provide at least 10 minutes of power on an power outage.

@gyptazy I've personally had nothing but bad luck with APC/Schneider UPSes.My recommendation would be Eaton's Elipse units. I have a bunch of different Eaton models in use at work and they're all solid performers.Keeping in mind that all UPSes are extremely rubbish from an IT point of view as they're all designed by electrical engineers. But still.

@fedops Thank you for your input. Unfortunately - at last this device - is more than 2 times the price of the APC one. But I will have a look at some other models from Eaton :) Thanks for mentioning them :)

@gyptazy this would be the equivalent model I think. Friend of mine has it and is happy. I'm getting this for my new home server plus infra as well.https://www.eaton.com/de/de-de/skuPage.ELP850DIN.html

@gyptazy Stay away from consumer grade Tripp Lite. Not impressed. They are Eaton so ... due diligence I guess.

@gyptazy Just a FYI:If any of the mini PCs you want to cover with the UPS has high efficiency power supplies (i.e., at least higher class of 80PLUS spec), it would have active PFC[PowerFactorCorrection circuit]s.And basically active PFCs are designed for sine wave as inputs from power lines.Means, if the output from UPS'es are NOT in sine wave (say, square wave), it could cause hazards.Cheap and simple switching power supplies without PFCs would be safe, though. This would be because outputs from cheap UPS'es are often in square wave to make their internal circuit simpler. https://www.soundhouse.co.jp/en/contents/staff-blog/index?post=3892&srsltid=AfmBOorycmGA7CJKkg1FIVu_o1bLTC4xFoEcdqinDSrd89J7oK7Kjs2S https://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/86943/will-a-psu-with-active-pfc-work-with-normal-ups#UPS #PFC #PowerSupply #Waveform

@gyptazy I have the UK BE850G2 version with NAS / Primary K8S controller / router (+modem) / 16pt switch.Had it ~1 year; It was very useful when we had work done during the summer (the electrician did have to trip the power a bunch). Got about 45 mins out of it during the work (enough to never have to shutdown).I have never plugged in to "manage" it.Oh, and most of my homelab is retired laptops, so they have built in UPS :)

Sounds great and I think I also will not use it in a managed way. It’s just for the uptime - not for graceful shutdown. Corrupted data can be quickly restored from the backup and the delta should be almost 0. So it should be fine :)@QuotidianEnnui

@gyptazy new generation APC's have let me down and been noisey. I actually got rid of one that was barely 2 years old because of the whine it was making under my desk.My new cyber power has been silent

Noises would be indeed a problem and the initial mentioned one should be silent. Oh man, looks like things become more difficult @lanefu

Looks like it will be the Eaton USV Ellipse ECO 650. This one should be silent and it should last for almost 30 minutes for my router and three mini PCs (each ~15W).

I just ordered the "Eaton USV Ellipse ECO 650" which is a bit larger than I wanted but beside this, it should fit all my needs. According to the reviews, the Pro version has since 2019 a continuous fan running (not only when charging or in active mode) which could be a bit annoying in the floor. So, I stick to the eco one which should still be pretty fine for my needs.@fedops

@gyptazy@gyptazy.com, I'm using the Back-UPS ES 850G2 for a year now and I am quite happy. One mini PC (+-15W), an Edge Switch and 2 wireless routers are connected. It gave my devices about 30 Minutes of battery life and I can control shutdown of the PC via FreeBSD in case it runs low on power.

So, it just arrived - my new EATON Ellipse 650 UPS.Not much to say honestly. Plugged it in, plugged the multiple socket port into it (that's the one where all other devices are connected to) and it simply works. I didn't had a look at any charging or similar - the lamp was green and I simply unplugged it. It beeps in a very soft way and lasted at least 12 minutes. The lamp was still green and I plugged it in back. 10-15 minutes is already perfect for three MiniPCs, FritzBox and a 2.5Gbit Switch. So, it already fulfills at that level my expectations. I have no control/mgmt interface plugged in to the USB, so I don't know the state of charge at that time but as said, it fits my expectations. Thank you very much for hinting me to the EATON systems :)Hopefully the battery lasts long :) @fedops
