Today’s library request: extract files off a Zip disk where there is no information about origin statement it came from. Windows doesn’t recognise it, so now trying to boot a 32bit Linux distribution in the hopes it might be able to read it.

In other news, booting off USB2 is amazingly slow.

@david Have you tried typing in a long stream of nonsense and then whispering "I'm in"?

@david wait, i see that it's mentioning the Iomega Tools, does that mean that it is encrypted before the filesystem?

@david consider using ddrescue if dd is struggling, I was able to get more data off the very old drives by using ddrescue’s retries if bad sectors sometimes

Disk recovery successful. 96Mb of 100Mb read. Of course that was only part of the fun. Next bit was finding something to read an HFS format disk (MacOSX dropped HFS support from 10.6 onwards). Luckily i have a working G4 Powerbook with 10.5 on it, and it read the disk image fine. I created an HFS+ disk image, copied the files to that and could then read that on my modem Mac. Documents seem to be in Word 6 for Mac format, which should be readable in LibreOffice iirc.

@david DiskJockey is probably a good tool for this. https://diskjockey.onegeekarmy.eu/Note: Make a backup of the image before pointing any piece of software at it. Always better safe than sorry.
