Deaf-Mute 'Slave' Ring Investigated
Monday May 1, 2000 12:00 PM ETPARIS (Reuters) - French police are investigating a suspected gang of Eastern European deaf-mutes exploiting hundreds of other deaf-mutes by luring them to France and forcing them to sell trinkets illegally, the daily Le Parisien said on Sunday.
A Paris judge, helped by sign language specialists, has questioned several deaf-mutes over the racket and some 28 are in police custody in major French towns.
Le Parisien said deaf-mutes had been smuggled in from Russia, Ukraine, Slovenia and Moldavia to be used in a ``slave labor'' operation, sent into restaurants and cafes to try and sell customers knick-knacks like keyrings and small toys.
Lured from their home countries by promises of well-paid jobs, the deaf-mutes are forced, sometimes under threat of violence, to go from cafe to cafe selling trinkets and hand over their takings to the gang leaders at the end of the day.
While the objects are mostly sold for a meager 10 to 15 francs (about $1.50 to $2) the spoils may amount to as much as two million francs a month for the ringleaders, the paper said.
Investigators have already turned up one million francs believed to have come from the operation.
