William,
Normally I ignore such messages, but in your case I have decided
to respond.

It seems that the least known technical fact about Internet
mailing lists is that one does not mail to the list to unsubscribe.

The convention is to mail to an address that is constructed by
appending "-request" to the name of the mailing list, e. g.
"vworlds-list-request@netcom.com". These days, that sometimes doesn't
work because the list is maintained by a robot program and not a human.

The best bet is to save the information about unsubscribing that is sent
to you when you subscribe.

This list is maintained by a program. To unsubscribe you should mail
to listserv@netcom.com with the following line in the BODY of your mail:

unsubscribe vworlds-list burgess@math.latech.edu

It's a source of irritation to the responsible person for every mailing list
that this fact is so little-known. It is amazing to me that the president of
the IEEE doesn't know it either. ...but, of course, now you do!

Yours,

Marc de Groot
