VRML is just the first (baby) step towards networked VR worlds. I
personally think that it does have some major limitations at the moment,
but it works and can be made to work on the 'average' consumer level
machine. I don't know how slow is soooo slow, nor do i know what kinds
worlds you've been looking at- it could be that the creators just didn't
know some of the tricks for lightening their worlds.

BTW, to introduce myself, I'm an artist who's been working digitally for
the past 5 years and just joined this list yesterday (and already
blabbing!). I had the pleasure of working on the Interactive Media
Festival's VRML project this past spring and have decided to throw myself
into the void of Virtual Art- I'm not sure why but it just seems to be the
thing to do ;) Anyway- excited by the prospect of a list devoted to this
subject...............
