i3D A New Dimension to Hypermedia

Version 1.0 now available for SGI

The Center for Advanced Studies, Research and Development in Sardinia, (CRS4, Cagliari, Italy) is happy to announce the availability of version 1.0 of i3D, a high-speed three-dimensional scene viewer for the World Wide Web.

The main new feature of this release is the support for full-screen stereo rendering using CristalEyes LCD shutter glasses. Stereo rendering combined with the Spaceball's 3D input capabilities makes i3D the first 3D browser with a true desktop-VR user-interface that provides key depth cues such as motion parallax and binocular disparity for a better understanding of visualized data. Time-critical rendering techniques allow the system to display complex 3D scenes at high and constant frame rates, making it possible to use it in the context of large scale projects. The system is currently being used at CRS4 for the Virtual Sardinia project and at CERN as a visualization and data management tool for the design of the new Large Hadron Collider.

This release incorporates also a lot of improvements and bug fixes to i3D with respect to version 1.0b.

Release notes for version 1.0 can be found at http://www.crs4.it/~3diadm/i3d-relnotes.html

Informations on how to download version 1.0 can be found at http://www.crs4.it/~3diadm/i3d-install.html

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions about i3D can be found at http://www.crs4.it/~3diadm/i3d-faq.html

Unsupported binaries are available for Silicon Graphics workstations running Irix 5.2 or later and having support for OpenGL rendering. This software is provided free of charge without warranty of any kind from CRS4.

More information on i3D can be found at http://www.crs4.it/~3diadm/

Enjoy!

i3D A High Speed 3D Scene Viewer for the World Wide WWW

The Center for Advanced Studies, Research and Development in Sardinia (CRS4, Cagliari, Italy) is happy to announce the availability of i3D, a high-speed three-dimensional scene viewer for the World Wide Web. i3D combines the 3D input and high-performance rendering capabilities of high-end virtual reality systems with the data fetching abilities of network browsers. Using a Spaceball or a mouse, the user can intuitively navigate inside 3D worlds, while selecting 3D objects with the mouse triggers requests for access to remote documents of any media type, from text to other 3D models. Time-critical rendering techniques allow the system to display complex 3D scenes at high and constant frame rates, making it possible to use it in the context of large scale projects. The system is currently being used at CRS4 for the Virtual Sardinia project and at CERN as a visualization and data management tool for the design of the new Large Hadron Collider.

i3D works in cooperation with the popular WWW browsers Mosaic and Netscape 1.1 for document retrieval and display. It is able to handle worlds described using the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML 1.0), as well as using its own file format.

Unsupported binaries are available for Silicon Graphics workstations running Irix 5.2 or later and having support for OpenGL rendering. This software is provided free of charge without warranty of any kind from CRS4.

More information on i3D and its installation through anonymous ftp can be found at http://www.crs4.it/~3diadm/
