Usually, when I
subscribe to a list, I start getting mailbox spam immediately.

That probably says something about your choice of lists, and your
available free time. :-)

I used to be a voluminous producer on this list, but I drove a number
of people away because of that, I think. Then I got busy, and my
volume went to near-zero. :-)

The best way to get discussion going is to lead it. Someone will
probably follow up on it. Then things tend to die until someone
initiates a new discussion.

I've only recently discovered that there's such a thing as vrml in the
works, and already my mind is swimming with the possibilities.

As someone who has worked on prototypes for 3d MUDs at various times,
I am very skeptical about how good all these VRML tools are really
going to be. I expect the initial releases to be very slow to
transmit data over modems, as in unusably slow. I think they will do
a good job of displaying 3d objects, but will do absolutely nothing as
far as object behavior is concerned. That pretty well means you won't
be able to do a 3d MUD with VRML just yet.

I'm adopting a "wait and see" attitude. I'd like to hear about
people's experiences with the VRML tools that are beginning to appear
now.
