There's 2 possible outcomes: If the result confirms the hypothesis,
then you've made a measurement. If the result is contrary to the
hypothesis, then you've made a discovery.

                     The Fidonews at a Glance

In the editorial this week, a couple of words about the BBS getting
rather old, this in "A 25th anniversary passed by unnoticed".

Warren Bonner in his column has a list of 25 "Attitude Adjustment"
     he wants to suggest.

Ward Dossche reports on the results from "The FTSC-Chair election
     has come to an end".

In the "Further adventures of Fidodog", the poor creature has some
more problems this week. As usual from the drawingboard of Frank Vest.

Finally there's a suggestion on how to handle those annoying
salespersons that always manage to call in the middle of dinner, this
     in "AT&T" from Warren.

     =================================================================

A 25th anniversary passed by unnoticed

On February 16th, 1978, the world's first BBS opened in Chicago, IL,
USA. Or rather a CBBS, Computerized Bulletin Board System, as it was
     called.

The "inventors" of this novelty were Randy Suess and Ward
Christensen. Randy did the hardware and Ward the software. And yes,
it's the same Ward that wrote the Xmodem protocol.

        In the words of Randy:

"The original CBBS consisted of a S-100 motherboard picked up at
some fleamarket. This was a "kit" of course, so I had to solder all
the connectors. (lotsa soldering done in those days, such as 8 k
memory boards filled with 1kX1 chips)

It was mounted on a BUD chassis with a single density 8 inch floppy
drive. On the motherboard was some 8080 cpu (upgraded to a Z80) a
Hayes 300 baud modem card, a 3P+S board with the parallel port used
for control signals, a Processor Technology VDM video display card,
and an 8k memory board. There was also a card with 8 1702 EEPROMS
that held the CP/M BIOS, video display drivers, and debug code, all
written by Ward. I had a EPROM burner, and Ward made sure all the
BIOS variables and experimentor stuff ended up in the last 1702.
Musta re-programmed that sucker 10 times a week for a few months.

The floppy drives of that time had 117vAC running the spindle
motor, and the drive would wear out quickly. So I built a circuit
on a prototype board that would turn on the system power when a
ring signal came in from the modem card and do a reset of the
computer. By the time the drive spun up, the software had answered
the phone and booted CPM and CBBS from the floppy. (simple power
fail system!) The circuit board also had some 555 timers, so when
the caller went away, the drive motors would continue to spin for
about 10 seconds to flush out any data, then shut the system down.
I had an old Heath chart recorder I hooked across the floppy drive
motor and set up the chart speed for 2 days per sheet. Was able to
determine the calling patterns from the chart.

From the 173k single density single sided floppy, we went to a pair
of them, then to double density double sided drives. Bout a year
later, moved CBBS to a NorthStar Horizon cabinet with a 10 meg
seagate hd. Both those systems are still sitting around someplace.
It is now running on a PC clone motherboard still running CP/M with
the original 8080 assembly code! The clone board has a V20 chip,
which fully supports the 8080 op codes. Ward wrote a wrapper around
CP/M-CBBS, and CBBS has been running that way for over 15 years."

Yes, things have really come a long way since those days. And the
CBBS became the BBS. But no doubt, this 25-year old has meant a lot to
data communication. Most modem manufacturers had some kind of sysop
     FIDONEWS 20-10 Page 4 10 Mar 2003

deal, because they realized, that by far the best way to test a modem
and it's compatibility with other brands, was to put the modem to
answer thousands of incoming calls to a popular BBS.

Nowadays, when most of our former users are spending their time
surfing the web rather than calling their local BBS, our phone lines
are silent most of the time, except for the occasional call to our
uplinks to get the mail, and, for some, a few calls from our downlinks
     for the same reason.

Sometimes an old BBS user finds the phone number to his/her old BBS
in a terminal program's phonebook, and tries it out to see if it still
works. Sometimes, to that user's big surprise, everything works
exactly as it did when he/she left the BBS several years ago, only
     magnitudes faster.

Unfortunately it usually ends right there, or possibly after a
couple of more calls the next few days. After all, what can be
expected? All the former BBS friends are long gone, and the old local
favourite echoes have their last message dated four-five years ago.

Let's face it, the BBS, at least the original, dial-up version, is
most likely an endangered species, so the question is, who'll have the
last working ditto running, and when will that sysop pull the plug?
Can the last one left please turn out the lights and lock the door?

The FTSC-Chair election has come to an end
                    By Ward Dossche, 2:292/854

The FTSC-Chair election has come to an end. There was one candidate:
     Scott Little.

11 people cast their vote as per the election rules. These are the
     names:

      Carol Shenkenberger
      Jesper Srensen
      Michiel Broek
      Werner Dworak
      Haakan Karlsson
      Alex Shakhaylo
      Jasen Betts
      Michiel van der Vlist
      George A. Roberts
      Andrew Clarke
      Tobias Ernst

One person did cast a vote in a different way than required by the
election rules and his vote is hereby nullified. This nullified vote
came from Dale Ross who voted in an FTSC-echo while votes had to be
sent via netmail or email. Dale Ross did not take corrective action
nor did he complain about his vote being nullified, so I assume he's
     happy with that.

The 11 valid votes were all in favor of the one candidate Scott
     Little.

Since 11 votes on 11 constitutes a plurality as per FTA1001 Scott
Little is hereby the winner of the election.

A period of complaints and appeals now starts for people who feel one
or the other aspect of this election has been conducted in an unfair
manner, i.e. not as per FTA-1001 and/or not as per the published
     election rules.

This period of complaints will end on March 30th 23h59 at which time
Scott Little may consider himself appointed chair of the FTSC for a
     period of 2 year.

     dinner!

     Ring

     ME: Hello.

     AT&T: Hello, this is AT&T.

     ME: Is this AT&T?

     AT&T: Yes, this is AT&T.

     ME: This is AT&T?

     AT&T: Yes, this is AT&T.

     ME: Is this AT&T?

AT&T: Yes! This is AT&T, may I speak to Mr. Byron, please?

ME: May I ask who is calling?

     AT&T: This is AT&T.

     ME: Ok, hold on.

At this point I put the phone down for a solid 5 minutes thinking
that, surely, this person would have hung up the phone. I ate my
salad. Much to my surprise, when I picked up the receiver, they were
     still waiting.

     ME: Hello?

AT&T: Yes, sir, we are a phone company.

ME: I already have a phone.

at the end of the year for the full $52,560; and if you send an annual
check, can I get a cash advance?

     AT&T: Excuse me?

ME: You know, the 10 cents a minute.

AT&T: What are you talking about?

     ME: You said you'd give me 10 cents a minute, 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week, 365 days a year. That comes to $144 per day, $1008 per week and
$52,560 per year. I'm just interested in knowing how you will be
     making the payment.

AT&T: Oh, no, sir. I didn't mean we'd be paying you. You pay us 10
     cents a minute.

ME: Wait a minute, how do you figure that by your saying that you'll
give me 10 cents a minute, that I'll give YOU 10 cents a minute? Is
this some kind of subliminal telemarketing scheme? I've read about
things like this in the Enquirer, you know.

AT&T: No, sir, we are offering 10 cents a minute for...

ME: THERE YOU GO AGAIN! Can I speak to a supervisor please?

AT&T: Sir, I don't think that is necessary.

ME: I insist on speaking to a supervisor!

AT&T: Yes, Mr. Byron. Please hold.

At this point, I begin trying to finish my dinner.

     SUPERVISOR: Mr. Byron?

     ME: Yes?

SUPERVISOR: I understand you are not quite understanding our 10 cents
     a minute program.

     ME: Is This A T & T?

SUPERVISOR: Yes, sir, it sure is.

ME: (I had to swallow before I choked on my food. It was all I could
do to suppress my laughter and I had to be careful not to produce a
snort.) No, actually, I was just waiting for someone to get back to me
so that I could sign up for the plan.

SUPERVISOR: Ok, no problem, I'll transfer you back to the person who
     was helping you.

     ME: Thank you.

I was on hold once again and managed a few more mouthfuls. I need to
end this conversation. Suddenly, there was an aggravated but polite
voice at the other end of the phone.

AT&T: Hello, Mr. Byron, I understand that you are interested in
     signing up for our plan?

ME: No, but I was wondering - do you have that "Friends and Family"
thing because I'm an only child and I'd really like to have a little
     brother...

     AT&T: click........

                            How to Submit an Article

If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
     will appear in the Fidonews:

     a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
        probably quite OK...

     b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
        personal comments.

     c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.

Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..

     Ideas for Subject areas:

         Subject File | Subject File
     ----------------------------------|----------------------------------
From the *C's *.css | Rebuttals to articles *.reb

Fidonet Classified Ads *.ads | Corrections *.cor
      Best of Fidonet *.bof |

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.

If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
