                     The Fidonews at a Glance

As promised, you can find part two of Carol's FAQ about listing
Internet Only Nodes in this week's issue. Or, in this part, rather
"How NOT to list an ION". The motorcycle trip down under now has
reached day 5, as usual the name of the article is "2002 Off Centre
     Rally - The Big U".

The work with changing Policy 4 has been going on quite some time
now. Read about how the work has progressed in "P4 amendment
     referendum".

Frank Vest has written down some thoughts about Petko's article
last week, you know, the one about a new BBS interface layer, this in
     "Rebuttal to Petko Bossakov".

In the kitchen, Carol once again uses her crock pot, this week
     for making "Crock-O-Peas".

And finally we've accumulated quite a mixture of jokes from Warren
Bonner, here you have a bunch of them in "Mixed collection of jokes".

                          Draft1, 29 March 2001
                     By Carol Shenkenberger, 6:757/1

This is the first in a training series for the prospective RC13 who
will as of this writing, be known in 2 days or after a runoff. One
thing every good RC does, is assist NC's. Sometimes that means
     assisting them with nodelisting skills.

It's especially common to need some help when it's an ION who needs
listing, if it's the NC's first. Suprisingly (evil grin) ION's dont
have a better idea about how to list themselves than the NC does,
commonly enough. That means the NC cant just 'take their word for it'
but needs to check some things.

Check 1: If they gave you data for the phone field-

               a. Was it -UnPublished- ? Good if they have no static IP
(Special note: Cant be /0 or HUB keyworded)

               b. If an 'IP' was it starting with 000- ?
                   (NOT 1-000- but 000- !!!!)

               c. Did it have an email address in the phone field? Take
that out if so. It wont process.

Check 2: If they use email for passing echomail traffic-

               a. Did they list it in the 'bbsnamefield' where it belongs
or attached to one of the flags for email-attachment
                   methods?

               b. If they listed it in the 'sysopnamefield' are they aware
no software looks for it there and that a prospective
contact person looking for 'Joe Smith' from a post will
never figure out from a front end mailer (FrontDoor,
ARGUS, etc) the address for 'Joe Smith' if the sysop
name field has 'pookie@fun.com' as it's entry?

Check 3: If they use FTP/TELNET/BINKP etc for passing traffic-

               a. Did they put the DNS lookup name for their site in the
bbsname area or attached to one of the flags pertinent
                   for that?

               b. If they use both email-attachment methods and an FTP/etc
type of method, did they list at least one of them in
the 'bbsnamefield' (or if static IP involved, in phone
     FIDONEWS 19-43 Page 4 28 Oct 2002

                   and bbsnamefield for email address)?

Check 4: Did they remember to remove the flags for modem types-

               a. ION's in Z1 are 300 baud

               b. ION's have no modem flags such as V32,VFC etc. They do
apply to this situation as no one is dialing you POTS,
_even if you are dialing your ISP via a POTS line_.

Check 5: Does it fit the specs-

               a. I'm calling this a draft as I do not know all the specs.
one I know is several fields and all 'user flags' are
limited to 32 characters max including the keyword and
                   possible :

               b. Is the total less than or equal to, what makenl can
handle? This is uncertain to me but seems to be 154 or
so total. Ward Dossche is the only one I know of who
ran into an otherwise compliant listing, that hit this
                   marker.

Special Note: There is no 'standard' for what we do, in Z1, when
faced with the ION NC or HUB.

               a. In R13, internal net routing is used for the HUB
situation (allowing them to do the same thing but no HUB
keyword is applied nor will a mailer default route to
                   them).

               b. ION NC's are a serious problem under P4 due to
requirement to route inbound netmail traffic and
software that will default to the NC if the node under
them is 'PVT' and that a new/returning node with POTS
                   only cant reach them.

2002 Off Centre Rally - The Big U
               Submitted by David Drummond, 3:640/305

Day 5 - Thursday 8th August (Winton to Boulia)

It started blowing in the night. The snapping of the fly was getting
pretty annoying, so David took it down around midnight. Our clothes
were dry in the morning! We were a bit disconcerted when all the signs
to Boulia were the same ones to Cloncurry, but it seems the turnoff is
a few kays out of town. Followed a ute with a blue canopy all the way
to Middleton where we stopped for fuel. After the flat featureless
plains at the start, there rises a range of hills and mesas. They
were dark red on the top blending down to pale pink on the skirt -
     quite lovely.

Middleton Pub is a real treat. Old, full of character but with a real
friendly atmosphere. Beautiful flagstone pathways outside. The
famous "Middleton Hilton" is over the road. This is just a quaint
shelter shed with picnic tables under the thatch. Half way along the
next bit of road, there was a lookout at the top of one of the
hillocks. It had 2 roads up it - a steep one, straight up, and a more
gentle one sloping up the side. David took the steep one, and was
quite alarmed when he got there to find large holes and washouts in
the face, along with loose rocks. He just wound on the throttle (as
you do!) and hoped he wouldn't shoot right over the tope and down the
other side. He was relieved when he got the top unscathed. Glad I
didn't try that one! The rest of the trip into Boulia was uneventful.
We were the first bikes into the caravan park, but heard of several
     already at the pub.

During the course of the afternoon, a whole swag of bikes arrived and
we were glad to meet up with many people that we hadn't seen for 2
years or more. It is always interesting to see who will turn up that
we recognise from past events. I was especially pleased to greet
Manfred and Reggie (known as "The Swiss") who come out each two years
especially for the Off Centre Rally. Also were happily surprised to
see Steve Otter (from the BM Workshop) and Senga were among the bunch
that arrived. We had been to the Kimberley 2 years ago with them.

Am now starting to really enjoy the holiday. Good friends are what
it's all about it, aren't they? Must be at last starting to wind down
from the stresses of working life. Dinner at the Pub that night was a
large, boisterous affair. I don't think the pub coped all that well
with the unexpected influx. Even I was surprised at how many people
were there. Was amused when a local man, entering the dining room,
stepped back with an involuntary "Holy Moses!"

Rick rang his friend on Badalia station (along the Donohue Highway) to
enquire about the state of the roads in the area. He said the Donohue
wasn't in as good nick as it was 2 years ago when we did it. He also
suggested going through the Roxborough Downs road (following the
Georgina River) rather than going out to Tobermorey, as it now a
public road. Much discussion about this, as a "river" road sounds
like it could be sandy. Also a friend of mine had done the Donohue in
a 4WD three weeks earlier and spoke if it being "pretty bad".

Since 1989, FidoNet Policy 4.07 has remained a stagnent and vritually
unchangable document, which maintains restrictive requirements on the
mechanism in which change is accomplished. Many radical and extensive
amendments have been presented in the past, but have failed. Also,
the Coordinator structure has historically demonstrated an
unwillingness to consider changes to Policy. Todays Coordinators have
shown a greater interest in bringing Policy more in line with current
technological and geo-political changes. This proposed amendnemt will
     afford them those opportunities.

During the past year, many concerned nodes have gathered in the
FIDOPOLS echo to discuss and debate an amendment which facilitates
     futures changes to Policy.

Following is a summery of proposed changes to Policy 4.07, as
discussed and agreed upon by these and other contributors:

     - Removing specific contact info for the FidoNews editor, to allow for
an editor outside of Zone one:

     - Removing specific numbers from the opening historical preamble

     - Several changes to, and a clearer formatting of, section 8,
       including:

Enumeration of the 3 stages of policy change (Initiation, Referendum,
     and Ratification).

     FIDONEWS 19-43 Page 8 28 Oct 2002

Adding minimum votes required in each stage to validate each one. IE:
5% for initiation, 10% for referendum, and 10% for ratification.

Designating "abstain" as a validating vote only, yet not counted
     either as "yes" or "no".

Allowing the IC to name a delegate(s) to conduct the process of policy
change, and adding provisions for cases where the IC position is empty
     during policy change proceedings.

Changing the requirements for referendum to a majority of responding
     RC's, instead of all RC's.

Adding that initiations to policy be accompanied by a sysopsis of the
proposed changes, with reasons why they are desired, and suggesting it
be preceeded by informal debate and agreement among the drafters.

Placing specific lengths to periods of debate and voting during the
initiation and ratification stages, and minimum time periods for
     voting.

Removing the "voting on multiple documents" reference, and calling for
separate ballots for each proposal, yet allowing for sequential
     ballots within a voting period.

Requiring that any proposal include amendents to all relevant
sections, to avoid inconsistancies to a ratified document.

Re-referencing pointers in 8.7 (Impeachment) to pertinent sections.

                           Rebuttal to Petko Bossakov
                                 By Frank Vest
                                  1:124/6308.1

Last week, Petko Bossakov wrote an article for the Fidonews titled
"Implementing a common standard for a higher BBS interface layer". I
think he has some good points. At the same time, I see some
     problems...

I agree that Fidonet needs more Users. Users were the reason many of
us started a BBS in the first place... and when the last User leaves
the BBS, that is often the reason we close the BBS down and leave
     Fidonet.

I'm not sure that Fidonet needs new entry points. As mentioned,
Fidonet has telnet and dial-up access. A GUI interface would be nice
and some BBS programs have that now. ELEBBS is one that I know of....
and it is freeware. Santronics' "Winserver" is another, but it is not
     free.

From what I think I am hearing, the freeware BBS packages that offer
a GUI don't have any more of a User base than the telnet ones. The
commercial BBS products may have more of a User base, but let's look
     at the "why" of that.

Commercial products such as "Winserver" offer a dial-up connection to
the Internet. The Users can dial into the software and then access the
Internet with their browser (Can you say "America OnLine"?). From what
I hear, most Users of the commercial BBS software want the Internet
access and seldom participate on the BBS side. It would seem that
simply adding a GUI interface is not the answer.

Now, I'll agree that Fidonet needs more publicity. I'll give in that
a GUI interface is nice.... However, what Fidonet really needs is a
way for Users to dial into a BBS with their "dial-up networking" and
gain access. Most potential Users have no idea of how to set up a
terminal program. Few have any idea of how to telnet into a BBS with
any sort of telnet application.... BUT!.. almost every potential User
knows how to click on their web browser and let the "dial-up
networking" connect them to the Internet.

I think that the above paragraph is what Petko is proposing. That, in
itself, is a good idea and might have the potential to gather some
Users. The transfer of files is not going to be a problem. FTP will
work once a User get a connect with their dial-up networking. Security
will be somewhat of an issue, but not that much of a problem except
for those that come in from the Internet via some ISP. For those that
dial into the BBS with their dial-up networking program, the security
will be easy. The dial-up networking takes care of it with a user name
and password to gain access. The problem isn't going to be the idea.
The problem is going to be getting the program written.

To get such a program written... one that will allow a User to dial
into a computer with their modem and access the web based GUI with
their browser will not be free. To write such a program would be to
re-invent America OnLine or Winserver. That would be fine, except that
Fidonet is a hobby. Few software authors with the ability to write
such a program are going to be willing to spend the time required to
write such a piece of software for free... or even at a cost that most
Sysops could afford. These programmers have a real job with families
that need support. To spend the time and energy required to write a
program such as Winserver would mean a full time job with no pay. I
     don't think that is likely.

What could be, and is slowly being, done is alternate ways to access
Fidonet. Security being the main issue here, a nice GUI interface for
those Users that have Internet access and want access via their web
browser. A "news server" for Fidonet echos. Users can access Fidonet
via their news client just like a newsgroup.

Again, security is the main issue. A means to log in that is secure.
The strength of Fidonet is the lack of spam in our message echos and
the inability for spammers to "harvest" e-mail addresses. To maintain
this, any means of access must have the security to allow the Sysop to
     prevent spam.

Another good idea would be a dial-up interface that would connect to a
telnet BBS software package. It seems that Fidonet is moving towards
the telnet access at the present time. This is good, as it is progress
in a direction that allows more Users a means to access a BBS. The
down side is that dial-up access is dropping by the wayside. With BBS
software becoming more and more "telnet only" with no means for a User
to dial up their local BBS, many Users find one day that their
favorite BBS is "gone", when, in fact, the Sysop has simply went
telnet only because the software s/he is using dropped the dial-up
ability. When this happens, the User is gone too... s/he goes to the
Internet and is lost to Fidonet. :(

An interface program that would accept a dial-up connection and then
telnet to the BBS would "plug" this gap. The interface program could
also be able to be called from a front end program such as Frontdoor,
Binkley, Argus or other such Fidonet front end. At least, with such a
program, Fidonet might keep some of the current Users.... perhaps even
gain a few. I understand that Synchronet BBS is working on such an
interface at this time. I could be wrong, but I hope I am right.

I think Petko has some good ideas here and I hope I have added some
good criticism as well as ideas. Fidonet just needs to build on these
ideas, but be careful in the process. We can open up the world of
Fidonet to to the world... but let's be careful how we do it.

                      Crock-O-Peas

           Yield: 12 Servings

2 c Dry black eyed peas
           1 lg Onion, chopped roughly
           1 ea Hamhock (optional)
                Water to 3/4 of crockpot
                Salt to taste
                Black pepper to taste

This is a time honored crockpot recipe for black-eyed peas. The meat
is optional and dieters will find it tastes just fine without the
ham-hock, or with just a few cubes of ham. A virtually meatfree
ham-bone will do also. Spam lovers can use chunks of spam.

Put the beans in the crockpot, and add the rest of the dry
ingredients. The salt and black pepper amounts will vary with your
desires, but I normally start with a tablespoon of each.

Cook on low for 12 hours. Serve as a side dish, or as a min dish
over rice. Keeps well in a crockpot for up to 2 days.

For gravy, take 1/2 cup of the liquid, and 1/2 cup of the beans, and
smoothe in a blender. Add more beans if not thick enough for your
desires, Use on rice, potatoes, and meats.

And you thought all blonds were dumb

A blonde in her fourth freshman year at UCLA, sat in her U.S.
Government Class, when the professor asked her if she knew what the
     Roe vs. Wade decision was.

She sat there for quite a while pondering this very profound question
and finally sighed and said, "I think that is the decision George
Washington made prior to crossing the Delaware!"

     Grounds For Divorce

A judge was interviewing a woman regarding her pending divorce, and
asked, "What are the grounds for your divorce?"

She replied, "About four acres and a nice little home in the middle of
the property with a stream running by."

"No," he said, "I mean what is the foundation of this case?"

"It is made of concrete, brick and mortar," she responded.

"I mean," he continued, "What are your relations like?"

"I have an aunt and uncle living here in town, and so does my
     husband's parents."

He said, "Do you have a real grudge?"

"No," she replied, "We have a two-car carport and have never really
     needed one."

"Please," he tried again, "is there any infidelity in your marriage?"

"Yes, both my son and daughter have stereo sets. We don't necessarily
like the music, but the answer to your questions is yes."

"Ma'am, does your husband ever beat you up?"

"Yes," she responded, "about twice a week he gets up earlier than I
     do."

Finally, in frustration, the judge asked, "Lady, why do you want a
     divorce?"

     "Oh, I don't want a divorce," she replied. "I've never wanted a

A student of proctology is in the morgue one day for lab work, wanting
to get a little practice in before the final exams. He goes over to a
table where a body is lying face down. He uncovers the sheet over the
body, and upon examination he finds a cork in the corpse's rectum.
Figuring that this is quite unusual, he pulls the cork out, and to his
surprise, music begins playing: "On the road again...just can't wait
to get on the road again..."

The student is amazed and puzzled, and places the cork back in the
backside. The music stops. Totally freaked out, the student calls Dr.
Lee the Medical Examiner over to the corpse. "Look at this, this is
really something," the student tells the examiner as he pulls the cork
back out again. "On the road again...just can't wait to get on the
     road again..."

"So what?" the Medical Examiner replies, unimpressed with the
     student's discovery.

"But isn't that the most amazing thing you've ever seen?" asked the
     student.

"Are you kidding?" replied the Examiner, "Any as-h-le can sing country
     music."

When you are in your casket, and friends, family and congregates are
mourning over you, what would you like to hear them say?"

Episcopal Priest: "I would like to hear them say that I was a
wonderful husband, a fine spiritual leader, and a great family man."

Catholic Priest: "I would like to hear that I was an excellent teacher
and a servant of God who made a huge difference in peoples' lives."

Rabbi: "I would like to hear them say, 'Look, he's moving.'"

                            How to Submit an Article

If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
     will appear in the Fidonews:

     a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
        probably quite OK...

     b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
        personal comments.

     c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.

Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..

     Ideas for Subject areas:

         Subject File | Subject File
     ----------------------------------|----------------------------------

Fidonet Classified Ads *.ads | Corrections *.cor
      Best of Fidonet *.bof |

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.

If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
