                               A GENTLE MAN
                        by Ward Dossche, 2:292/854

A few hours ago the news reached us that Clay Tannacore has passed
     away.

It may surprise some that it is me writing this but I just cannot let
this pass and fade-away as a one-line announcement in an
echoconference. In writing this, I hope somehow, somewhere a trace
will remain of Clay's temporary presence on Earth and what he meant to
     some.

Many people in Fidonet have not really known Clay. He was always quite
direct in his wording, vitriolic sometimes, but obviously a man with a
mission in life and a feeling for justness.

Him and I met in the privacy that sometimes is offered by Fidonet,
yeah ... it exists ... and found a common ground that many ignore. We
talked about the people in Washington DC manning the Vietnam POW-MIA
vigil near the Lincoln Memorial and The Wall. He asked me about the
books I bought there, the MIA T-shirt I was wearing.

He was quite a guy with quite a story whom many of us have
underestimated and not always treated him the way we should have.
Well, he wasn't a sissy either...

Then one day I just openly told him he was just holding-up a facade,
for which reason I did not know, but that he most likely was a very
gentle person who needed the roughness to shield him off from
something. I respected that, he would be unable to act annoying
anymore since it was clear what a fine man he was.

February 1999 ... I had to be at the UN in New York and he also had
some business around there, whatever it may have been, so we made an
appointment to meet and at least have a coffee. I was looking forward
to it. His business fell through and his reason/excuse to go to New
York with it ... we didn't meet but on and off stayed in touch.
Sometimes I went to North Carolina, so ... who knows, we might meet
     after all!

Earlier this year he sort of went missing and someone asked me to go
looking for him. It appears he was very sick and hospitalised but
eventually his situation improved, he went home and he was mailing
     again.

When it became clear I might be in the neighbourhood this year we
exchanged some mails and for a very strange and unexplained reason his
lastone was kept on file here, something which I normally don't do.
Now I'm glad I did and it will be saved because this is a
demonstration of what a nice man, often misunderstood, he was. Let me
     share it with the world:

Well, I was a couple of times, but I managed to pull through in fair

So much so that I was given Last Rights by my Priest. Nonetheless,
     I'm still walking around.

My friend, I don't believe I'll ever be able to make that coffee date.
While I'm doing pretty good right now (physically), I don't believe
travelling is in my whelm of activities. I've officially retired from

He called me "friend" and the things he said about my little girl now
sound as if he was saying "good-bye" ... as if he knew a meeting would
     never happen.

What a beautiful man he must have been, what lucky people who walked
     in his company.

Clay was a religious person. Those in the readership that are too,
please remember him in prayer, those that are not please honour him in

Clay was a friend for some 8 years past. His spirit never lagged but
his ability was hard pressed these past 3 years. I shall miss him as
a light in the night, that made me think of home.

Clay Tannacore As I knew Him
                                By Ross Cassell

I want to say that it was five or six years ago, when I first
encountered Clay Tannacore. I encountered him in a South Carolina
specific echo called 'SCNET', SCNET was a place South Carolina sysops
gathered to discuss or argue all things "South Carolina", politics,
blue laws, religious and other social issues. Out of the blue I get
blind sided by this man calling himself "Clay Tannacore", all I knew
was he was impossible to engage in conversation and you could not
ascertain his position on any of the various issue we were trying to
discuss, I simply tried to avoid him when I could, those of you that
knew Clay, have to know that this was a hard thing to do..

In the summer of 1998, the Region 18 Coordinator announced that he was
resigning and leaving Fidonet and that we needed to conduct a special
election to replace him. I decided to run for the job, lo and behold,
who comes in to support my endeavour, but none only than a one "Clay
Tannacore", giving me advice and encouragement, afterall I was not
very well known in the region. I did win that election and I do not
imply that it was anything Clay did, but I point out the irony of him
having come in to support me, after having broad sided me in a echo,
there was no interaction between him and I between those events.

I asked him several months after I became RC18, why he supported me
for the position, after the way he clashed with me in the SCNET echo,
he replied that he liked how I stood my ground and "carried" myself.
Somehow its a cryptic response, because I almost always obey "Newtons
Law", which is for every action there is an equal but opposite
reaction. Which means, hit me and I will hit back.. <g>

Clay had many friends and for lack of a better word, enemies, in
Fidonet but he never kissed up nor did he resort to that which many of
us do which is "to retaliate". He either agreed with what you were
saying or he did not and would not hesitate to tell you. If anyone was
the master of "wit", even if the product of a "dirty mind", it had to
be Clay. Some say that Clay always had some sort of agenda going on, I
say he partook in this hobby for the ultimate goal, which was "to have
fun". I think he reveled in walking down the center line as the two
sides of any given issue fought bitterly while not getting himself too
terribly mired in the politics that resulted from either side. Kudo's
to Clay for having the sense to take time out for the fun!

When I became RC18, Fidonet was well into its winding down phase, but
I still had a volatile and politically divided net in region 18, while
some of Clays detractors will refuse to believe, it was Clay who was
the most instrumental in helping me calm and quell the fires that
     burned in that net.

In the past few years, especially since the summer of 1998, I have
probably had the most contact with Clay in one form or another, but I
cannot sit and rattle off to you all the personal details of his life,
just the basics, he never volunteered too much personal information
and frankly I never asked. I can tell you that he was from New York,
he fought and was injured in the Vietnam War and that he was in the
legal profession. Some of you that knew Clay, also have seen him often
     FIDONEWS 19-40 Page 8 7 Oct 2002

brag about things that were preposterous or at least highly unlikely,
I attribute that aspect of Clay as the "air of mystique" he liked to
keep around himself, otherwards "keep them guessing". What I can tell
you is that Clay from what I can tell, raised his children right, he
is survived by his daughter Tina and a younger son, whose name escapes
me, both are well mannered and respectful.

     But anyway.

I dont write this article to place Clay Tannacore on a pedestal or to
be "held on high", but to merely reflect back on the Clay Tannacore I
knew, a fellow hobbyist, citizen and human being, I will miss his wit
and slightly odd sense of humor, I will miss him nad I hope you will
     to.

                        ON THE PASSING OF FRIENDS
By Michiel van der Vlist, 2:280/5555

We all are faced with it sooner later. Someone we know dies. For most
of us the first real encounter with death is when, as a child, we lose
one of our grandparents. Those are the lucky ones. Some times life
goes against the nature of things and it is the other way around.

As life progresses we will be faced with the passing of our parents
and ultimately with the passing of the loved ones of our own age. We
start scanning the obituaries in the paper for someone we knew. Ever
more often we see a name that is familiar. A friend from high school
that you lost contact with, a distant relative, a neighbour.

The closer they are to us, the bigger the impact. First comes family.
Then come friends and others we share an interest with. This week we,
the community of FidoNet, were faced with the passing of one we shared
     a hobby with: Clay Tannacore.

I didn't really know Clay. If I recall correctly, I exchanged a few
messages with him in echomail, but that is all. I never met him in
     person.

Yet I, like all of you, the readers of this electronic magazine, had a
bond with Clay. We shared a hobby. That gives his passing an extra
     impact.

Clay Tannacore I salute you. May you rest in peace.

Just a long note about Clay Tannacore
                          By Frank Vest, 1:124/6308.1

I didn't get to know Clay like many in Fidonet have. I don't have
lots of memories or stories or other things to tell. I will tell this:

I "ran into" Clay in the Z1C echo. We "butted heads" on some things
and agreed on others, but that was ok and normal. During one of our
conversations, I mentioned that my father was a Veteran and that he
had been discharged with an "Honorable Discharge" that I thought
should have been a "Medical Discharge" due to a medical problem that
dad had when he was inducted into the service. Dads stay in the
service made the problem worse and was the reason that he left the
service (I think he was discharged early due to the problem). At any
     rate....

Clay contacted me via Netmail and offered to help my mother try to
get benefits for my dad, who was, at that time, a total invalid and
not able to deal with such matters. I related some details to Clay and
asked what the charge would be for such services. Clay told me that he
could get the cost covered and his time would be nothing. My mom
decided to not pursue the effort. I told Clay this and he wrote me
back saying that if she ever changed her mind, let him know.

Now, that might not seem like much, but it tells me a lot about Clay.
Yes, he was tough and may not have been the "favorite child" of all in
Fidonet, but he had an integrity that is to be admired and aimed for
by each of us. As I said, I never knew Clay as personally as many, but
if I know nothing else, I believe that he was a man of integrity and
deserving of his final rest from his suffering in this life.

I'll close with this to his family. I believe that Clay "fought the
good fight" and is now in a place that is much better than this place
we are stuck in. I've said this many times to people that were
     grieving the loss of a loved one;

"If you keep them in your memories, they never really die!"

      God bless the Tannacore family.

     Frank - 1:124/6308(.1)

                            How to Submit an Article

If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
     will appear in the Fidonews:

     a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
        probably quite OK...

     b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
        personal comments.

     c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.

Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..

     Ideas for Subject areas:

         Subject File | Subject File
     ----------------------------------|----------------------------------
From the *C's *.css | Rebuttals to articles *.reb
Fidonet Regional News *.reg | Fidonet Net News *.net
Retractions *.rtx | General Fidonet Articles *.art
Guest Editorial *.gue | Fidonet Current Events *.cur
Fidonet Interviews *.inv | Fidonet Software Reviews *.rev
Fidonet Web Page Reviews *.web | Fidonet Notices *.not
Getting Fidonet Technical *.ftc | Question Of The Week *.que
Humor in a Fido Vein *.hfv | Comix in ASCII *.cmx
Fidonet's Int. Kitchen *.rec | Poet's Corner *.poe
Clean Humor & Jokes *.jok | Other Stuff *.oth
Fidonet Classified Ads *.ads | Corrections *.cor
      Best of Fidonet *.bof |

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.

If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
