                     The Fidonews at a Glance

No articles were submitted this week, and rather than writing an
editorial with boring whining over this, I decided to hold that column
this week. But we did at least have some humour sent in to the section
"Humour in a Fido Vein". It's from Petko Bossakov and is about "The
     pricelist of a Sysop".

In Editor's Corner I write about a small utility I included in the
file distributed Snooze, "PC2ISO -- a bonus program".

Fidonets International Kitchen serves "Japanese Pan fried Gobo and
Carrot", as usual our Japanese meal is prepared by Carol.

The Jokes section this week has the theme old women. First one from
the neverending Warren Bonner archives, called just like that, "Old
women" and then two from my own archives, none of which I can remember
where I got them from. "That's my Mother", about how our view of our
mothers changes as we grow up, and "The Pledge" about how a pledge to
a women can make your life long and prosperous.

                        PC2ISO -- a bonus program

As the observant reader may have noticed, the last half year or so,
extended characters are permitted in the Fidonews. This to allow all
of us with such characters in our names, to have the names spelled
     properly.

One problem with this new service, is that there are several
standards used to encode those characters. The one used in the
Fidonews is the one, that is default in Fidonet, IBM PC-8. This is
because most programs used on Fidonet systems still are DOS based, and
     that means PC-8.

As more and more people are reading the Fidonews on the web or in
some Windows based viewer, or even on a unix based system, the need to
have the extended characters coded in ISO-Latin rises. To help achieve
this, I wrote a small program, that is included in the file
distributed version of this week's Fidonews.

To keep the program as small and simple as possible, it has very
rudimentary error checking and almost no extras. You use it like this:

         'pc2iso infile outfile'

...where the complete filenames must be supplied, and they must not
be the same. They also must be pure text files, like the Fidonews.

Source code, in Borland Pascal, is included. It should be standard
enough to compile with other Pascal compilers, save perhaps for some
     type castings used.

                           The pricelist of a Sysop
                           Petko Bossakov, 2:535/1

The Worldwide International Global Association of Sysops has
unanimously decided that, while the Sysops maintain their BBSes
entirely as a hobby, a nervous breakdown is a common occurrence among
them, and thus they need to be compensated for their potentially
stressful experiences. That's why we're posting a list of services
that should be provided to the users in exchange for an appropriate
price, as they could be hazardous to the Sysop's mental health.
Here is a suggested list of services and their corresponding fees:

     1. Asking if this price list is for real - $40
     2. Question - $10
     3. Stupid question - $20
     4. Stupid question and not being able to explain the problem - $30
     5. Insisting that the Sysop is incompetent, because they cannot
understand anything from your unclear explanations - $1000
     6. Asking a question which is answered in the HELP - $10
     7. Asking whether a modem is needed to connect - $20, regardless of
        the answer
     8. Making the Sysop ask you "What version of Windows are you using?"
and then "Do you see in the lower left corner a rectangle saying
        [Start]?" - $20
     9. Explanation of the difference between a username and an e-mail
        address - $30
     10. Answering the question "Is your external modem turned on" with "I
have never turned it on before and everything worked fine" - $20 +
the price of a strong sedative
     11. Asking if you have to connect to the BBS in order to read your
         mail - $20
     12. Having your Windows reinstalled by a friend and then calling in
order to tell the Sysop that nothing is working and you haven't
         done anything - $25
     13. Claiming that after the Sysop has personally come and seen that
Windows 95 has been replaced with Windows XP, you simply
didn't notice - $150 + the price of the sedatives
     14. Asking for an username in Cyrillic, because you are going to
exchange mail with people from Russia - $50 + the price of the
         bullet
     15. Complaining that the transfer speed is too slow, because it takes
         at least 10 minutes to download a 5-minute video clip - $15
     16. Asking for a Netmail you've sent 3-4 days ago to be cancelled, or
if it isn't possible, asking the Sysop to call the recipient and
tell them that you didn't mean to send that - $200
     17. Asking the Sysop to check your mailbox, read the messages, and if
there's something interesting, to send it by fax, because you have
         no time for this bull***t - $500
     18. Forwarding to the Sysop a message, written in Cyrillic, and
complaining that the BBS doesn't work, because you can't read
         anything - $100
     19. Claiming that your modem is great (you've given a whole $15 for
     FIDONEWS 19-17 Page 5 29 Apr 2002

it) and in spite of that, the connection is dropped in less than
         30 minutes - $50 + the price of a new modem
     20. Making the Sysop listen to explanations of this kind: "So I go
with the mouse on that red thing and there used to be some things
which you could click on, and now there are other things and they
         are round" - $50/h
     21. Wanting someone to come to your place to fix the mess that's been
left after your frivolous mouse clicking on the red thing - $20
     22. Making the Sysop visit you after you've made a very nervous phone
call stating that you can't connect and then finding out that your
data phone line has been disconnected because of overdue bills -
         $25
     23. Calling the Sysop to your home because you have a problem and then
explaining that you wanted to know how exactly you turn on the
         computer that you've bought yesterday - $20 + transport costs +
the price of a basic computer course
     24. Calling the Sysop with a problem they've solved before - $100
     25. Trying to convince the Sysop that it's not you who mess around
         with the software - $200
     26. Asking the Sysop to come on foot to your place to solve your
         problem - $5/step
     27. Insisting that the Sysop comes to another town to solve your
problem - $50/km + the cost of the petrol
     28. Interrupting the Sysop while he's trying to solve someone else's
         problem - $45/h
     29. Expecting the Sysop to tell you how exactly they solved the
         problem - $50
     30. Doing something that the Sysop told you not to do - $300
     31. Having your "broken" mouse fixed with a mousepad - $25
     32. Having your "broken" mouse fixed by cleaning - $50
     33. Having your "broken" printer fixed by putting toner in it - $35
     34. Having your "broken" WHATEVER fixed by pushing the power button
         - $250
     35. Forgetting your password after the Sysop has personally tattooed
it on your index finger - $25
     27. Turning to the Sysop for maintenance of something - $150/h
(regardless of whether the Sysop knows how the something works)
     28. Making the Sysop lose 30 minutes trying to figure out what the
problem is, then another 5 minutes to explain you how to solve it,
and then saying "Aaah, the box that popped out told me to do
exactly the same thing" - $40
     29. Making the Sysop use the phrase "I'm probably not the right person
to talk to about this. Why not call the number on the box in which
         that came?" - $55
     30. Dealing with a user, who have self-proclaimed themselves as
smarter than the Sysop, but call the Sysop for help twice a day -
         $100/h

                      FIDONET'S INTERNATIONAL KITCHEN
     =================================================================

Japanese Pan fried Gobo and Carrot

1/2 lb Gobo, peeled and slivered
         1/2 lb Carrots, slivered
           2 tb Cooking oil
           2 tb Shoyu (Soy Sauce)
           1 tb Sake
2 ts Toasted sesame seeds (opt)
                Su water for soaking

Here's one thing I found to do with Gobo (Burdock Root). Peel and
slice the gobo into pencil like shavings, dropping those into 'su'
water right away to keep them fresh. (2-3 tablespoons vinigar to a
quart of water is su water). Chop the carrots to the same pencil
shavings, then heat oil and add both. Stir constantly over high heat
for 2-3 minutes then glaze them by adding the shoyu, mirin, and sake.
Continue to cook about 4 mins or so the place on a plate and garnish
     with the sesame seeds.

                      That's my Mother

4 years of age: My Mommy can do anything!
8 years of age: My Mom knows a lot! A whole lot!
12 years of age: My Mother doesn't really know quite everything.
14 years of age: Naturally, Mother doesn't know that, either.
16 years of age: Mother? She's hopelessly old-fashioned.
18 years of age: That old woman? She's way out of date!
25 years of age: Well, she might know a little bit about it.
35 years of age: Before we decide, let's get Mom's opinion.
45 years of age: Wonder what Mom would have thought about it?
65 years of age: Wish I could talk it over with Mom.

                             The Pledge

Grandpa was celebrating his 100th birthday and everybody complimented
him on how athletic and well-preserved he appeared.

"I will tell you the secret of my success," he cackled. "My wife and I
were married 75 years ago. On our wedding night, we made a solemn
     pledge.

Whenever we had a fight, the one who was proved wrong would go outside
and take a walk. Gentlemen, I have been walking in the open air day
after day for some 75 years now."

                      By Warren Bonner <wdbonner@pacbell.net>

When I went to lunch today, I noticed an old lady sitting on a park
bench sobbing her eyes out. I stopped and asked her what was wrong.
She said, "I have a 22-year-old husband at home. He makes love to me
every morning and then gets up and makes me pancakes, sausage, fresh
     fruit and freshly ground coffee."

I said, "Well, then why are you crying?"

She said, "He makes me homemade soup for lunch and my favorite
brownies and then makes love to me for half the afternoon".

I said, "Well, why are you crying?"

She said, "For dinner he makes me a gourmet meal with wine and my
favorite dessert and then makes love to me until 2:00 a.m.

I said, "Well, why in the world would you be crying?"

She said, "I can't remember where I live!"

                            How to Submit an Article

If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
     will appear in the Fidonews:

     a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
        probably quite OK...

     b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
        personal comments.

     c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 01:00 UTC.

Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. The file name can be anything up
to 8 characters. Please help by putting the file extension of the
correct subject on the file name if known..

     Ideas for Subject areas:

         Subject File | Subject File
     ----------------------------------|----------------------------------
From the *C's *.css | Rebuttals to articles *.reb
Fidonet Regional News *.reg | Fidonet Net News *.net
Retractions *.rtx | General Fidonet Articles *.art
Guest Editorial *.gue | Fidonet Current Events *.cur
Fidonet Interviews *.inv | Fidonet Software Reviews *.rev
Fidonet Web Page Reviews *.web | Fidonet Notices *.not

Clean Humor & Jokes *.jok | Other Stuff *.oth
Fidonet Classified Ads *.ads | Corrections *.cor

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.

If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
