                            The Fidonews at a Glance

The Editorial this week is based on a quote from Tom Jennings about
who the Fidonews is for and what it is for.

Andrea Santos gives her rebuttal to Carl Bennett's article last week.

In the "Humor" section is a bit copied from a Fidonet echo, with
     permission, by Paul Williams.

Ol' WDB sends Fidonet a plea for harmony.

The question of the week, such as it is, asks a question and desires a
     "why" for the answer.

Don't forget the "Classified Ads" section. Write an advertisement for
your Fidonet service, software or ?? for next week.

                              The Fidonews Is For
                                 By Frank Vest

Much has been said over the last few weeks about the Fidonews and
what should be allowed or not allowed in it. This editor has taken a
poll, listened and tried to understand from all points of view. The
points of view from people in Fidonet vary widely, from the belief
that the Fidonews should be strictly a technical publication, to the
belief that any and all articles should be allowed.

I offer the following quote from Tom Jennings,
     REF: "http://www.well.com/~jonl/works/tjennings.html"

"FidoNews was designed in '84 in the first year as the meta-net, to
discuss the net itself, to discuss the social end of the net. In the
first issue was a retired Air Force colonel or something, whining
about the military retirement process, and people instantly said,
"This is supposed to be a technical newsletter, this is FidoNet." and
I said, "No, bullshit, it's not. I'm tired of just this techie crap.
Do you talk on the phone about your telephone all the time? 'Gee, I've
got a great new phone, it's got all these pushbuttons.' and you get
bored very quickly. It's like radio amateurs talking about their
goddamn antennas." Who wants to put up with that stuff?"
                                -Tom Jennings

While the wording is a little crude, Tom captures what the Fidonews,
and Fidonet, is and isn't about. In the very first sentence, Tom
refers to the "social end of the net". Ladies and gentlemen, The
Fidonews is more than just a technical newsletter for Fidonet. Fidonet
is more than just a technical network. Were it not, there would be no
echos such as "BARBROOM", "CHATTER", "MUSIC" and such. All we would
     have is "*TECH" type echos.

It has been argued that the Fidonews should be about Fidonet. I
     couldn't agree more.

Now, what is Fidonet about? Is Fidonet just about computers,
software, networking, technical aspects? This editor thinks not.
Fidonet is about people, communication, the social aspects. If the
Internet was only about the Internet, where would it be? If only
Internet related topics were allowed on the Internet, what would be on
the Internet? Not much more than a few pages giving information on how
to contact and get an account with an ISP. If Fidonet were the same
way, there would be little more than a few echos telling how to set up
and receive the echos telling how to set up and receive the echos
about setting up to receive the echos about.... :-)

In this light, if the Internet had a newsletter that was only for or
about the Internet, what articles would be in it? Answer?: Articles
about how the Internet worked on a technical basis, how to set up to
connect to an ISP to receive web pages on how to set up and receive
     FIDONEWS 18-48 Page 4 26 Nov 2001

web pages about how to set up..... The Fidonews would be much the
     same. :(

No. Fidonet is about people. Communication, social aspects and
interaction. In the international aspect, it is about other cultures,
learning, and more. If this were a newsletter about astrology, it
would be easy to get articles. There would be thousands of astrologers
that had nothing better to do than, or interest in, writing about the
stars. Articles would flow constantly about this new star or that new
telescope. It is harder to get these "cantankerous" people in Fidonet
     to write articles. :-)

Ladies and gentlemen. The Fidonews is about people, interaction
between those people, cultures, learning about people and cultures
and, of course, the technical end of Fidonet. It has been said from
all over Fidonet that `others', meaning those that are not in "our"
country, don't understand us and don't know about us. It's been argued
that the Fidonews is dominated by `others'. I ask, why? Why do you
allow this to happen? Why don't you write an article about your land,
culture or whatever? True, it might not be interesting to all, but,
neither are the latest init strings to a 56k modem. It might, however,
     be of interest to some.

There are many sections in the Fidonews. Some may seem to not "fit"
in the Fidonews. I put it to you that this depends on the reader, the
writer and the article. In all the sections of the Fidonews, the below
     are the ones that I see as "not really about Fidonet";

     Comix
     Fidonet's International Kitchen
     Poet's Corner
     Clean Humor and Jokes
     Special Interest

Guess which sections I get the most articles for???

Yup, you guessed it. The above mentioned sections.

I'm going to end this with a thought. The next time you feel the need
to complain about an article that "doesn't belong in the Fidonews",
think about what Fidonet is for and what the Fidonews is for. Then,
write an article and send it in. While you're at it, write an article
that does "fit" in the Fidonews and submit it. That way you will have
two voices in the Fidonews and the Fidonews will have articles to
publish that are about Fidonet from Fidonet people.

     Kind regards,

      Frank Vest - Editor, Fidonews

                               "Wagging the Dog"
              By Andrea Santos, 1:135/382, asantos@santronics.com

In response to CAB's article last week on "Leash Laws," what he and
his cohorts in Oshawa and, specifically, Net 229 continually fail to
comprehend is the out of area ION nodes they list, a number of which
are not even running valid Mailers, were never theirs to have.

While Net 229 may not adhere to Policy 4 in any manner, the rest of
Zone 1 does, and the rules pertaining to out of area geographic
listings are clear. If there is a technical reason (includes
non-response from *C above) why a node cannot be listed in their
geographic Net/Region, an out of area listing would be prudent. If
there exist personality issues between a node and their NC/RC to the
point of incompatibility, an out of area listing should also be
considered by the *C above the frey.

What's at issue is the intentions and motivation of Net 229, which
have absolutely nothing to do with the legitimate reasons cited above
for requesting an out of area listing. Plain and simply, it's about
stuffing their nodelist segment with nodes, regardless, even if they
     are not technically compliant.

     Doing this serves several purposes:

      - Pounding collective chests that Net 229 and, hence, Region 12 is
listing nodes at a faster clip while other Nets/Regions are not or
doing so at a slower pace.

      - Thumbing P4, the ongoing game.

      - Blatant attempt to collect nodes in the event Fidonet should ever
proceed with a Sysop Level vote for Z1C with the goal of Region
12 determining who will become Z1C at the expense of all other
        Regions.

To be clear, what this isn't about is some altruistic effort on the
part of Net 229 to encourage the growth of Fidonet. It is about
growing one little spec on the North American Map to further the
political goals of a small minority of disgruntled nodes, clustered in
a "geographic" Net/ Region. Ironically, we are back to geography, but
on terms not defined or recognized in Policy 4.

The incessant whining from this crowd is old and tiring. Either live
within the rules of Zone 1 and forward on legitimate nodes to their
applicable Nets/Regions or pack up and apply for Zone 12 status.

                                 Disheartening
                              wdbonner@pacbell.net

Disharmony continues to rage rampant in some of the echoes. I fear
dear readers, that the foundation fidonet was constructed upon is in
jeopardy. Some of the most experienced sysops, the ones that were the
wheels and cogs, the ones that moved the fidonet nodes to join, work
and learn with each other; are now battling each other in the echoes.
No one wants to appear civil, polite or gracious in word or tone.
This hatred is a far worse disease than malingering and malaise for it
destroys the spirit, the fuel the heart of fidonet runs on. If our
most experienced sysops fight each other to a point that no one
participates for fear of assassination... then malaise will finish
     Fido.

Why can't the great egos lock step with each other and solve problems
rather than exploit them to weaken those they perceive to be
adversaries? I note that some post as though they are campaigning and
their opponents are contenders for the same office and must be covered
     with mud.

Where is the Fidonet of the eighties and early nineties? Back then a
node could ask a question and have almost instant help, now that same
node would be berated for ignorance, (especially if they wanted
clarification on Policy 4.07 as a remedy), by the pontifical
prognosticators of "evil electioneering" and total disobedience to
Policy 4's guidelines except where convenient to them.

Many more nodes would be willing to post and participate were it not
so dangerous to them personally. It is just easier to stay in the
shadows and watch the wheels knock each other off. I for one would
like to see some good things said for the *C's. I think verbally
tearing down the structure that made Fidonet one of the first and
largest independent networks in the world, is wrong. I think
belittling those who have given their time and many cases their money,
to build Fidonet, deserve some word of praise rather than demeaning
comments. The Zones should be helping and complementing each other
rather than: "I am smarter and bigger than you".

I do hope this writing will encourage those "silent souls" to rise to
the occasion and help bring Fidonet back on track 1988 where I found
her to be anxious, willing to be helpful, and intensely cooperative.
Not one, but three sysops were there to pick me up everytime I fell
down... which was everytime Wildcat sneezed... <G> Finally friend Joe
"skinned that cat" after several cat deaths and set up "Remote
Access", I think to get some free time for his own BBS.... heeheh. I
am not a technical programmer, I am a writer that loves to find good
friends in Fido and enjoy the camaraderie with out the cactus.
Different points of view can be presented with out the words "Idiot"
and "$#@!" or "ass%#*e". We are civilized... No? JMHO

     Does Fidonet need a Policy?

     Why??

I learned some lessons over the last two days.

Lesson One: While bring some snacks into the living room Saturday
night, my overloaded right hand fumbled an item off my right side.
I caught it before it fell a foot, with my left hand.

Lesson: I am still quick as blazes when push comes to shove.

Lesson Two: By the end of the night my back was stiff, and by
morning I could hardly move. Only hours of painkillers, heat, and
     careful working got me mobil.

Lesson, I am not in good enough condition to be quick as blazes.

Anyone know a good body shop? I need a new one.

                                  Rotating ads

As a service of the Fidonews, I am prepared to offer rotating ads for
those that provide services to Fidonet such as Mail Hubs, Gateways,
Fidonet via Internet, Fidonet software, Backbone services and such.

      How this works:

     1. Create an ad following the guidelines for the Fidonews.
     2. Keep it short and to the point.
     3. Put contact and other needed information in the ad.
     4. Send it to Frank Vest as a file attach.
       A. E-Mail "flv@sbcglobal.net
       B. Netmail "Frank Vest - 1:124/6308

I will put the ad in a pool and use a program each week to
automatically rotate the ads into the Fidonews.

Please! If you stop offering service or need to change your ad,
contact me! This is very important to keep the ads current.

I'm doing this on a trial basis. If it gets to be a problem, I will
have to discontinue the service. I can make no promise of how often
your ad will be in the Fidonews. This will depend on how many ads I
     have to rotate through.

As always in Fidonet, I make no guaranties. :)

                            How to Submit an Article

If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
     are the -=_guidelines_=-:

No more than 70 characters per line. This includes spaces.

     No right or left margins.

Plain ASCII text _only_. Good rule is: If you can't type it on a plain
     typewriter, don't use it.

Put a title to the article and your name.
Note: Put the title in two times. The first time and first line
should be with an * before it. The second time and second line
should without the * and centered. This will help in the format
since the title with the * is removed and used in the index and
the other one will remain and show what the article is about.

Articles that contain vulgar language might not be accepted. (the only
real rule in this whole thing) Remember, we really don't know who
     might be reading the Fidonews.

Deadline for article submission is Saturday, 12:00 midnight (24:00
hours) according to _my_ clock. I'm in the Central Time Zone in the
U.S.A. That's GMT-6. Articles received after the deadline will appear
     in the next Fidonews.

Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. The file name can be anything up
to 8 characters. Please help by putting the file extension of the
correct subject on the file name if known..

     Ideas for Subject areas:

         Subject File | Subject File

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.

If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.

Send Articles via E-mail or Netmail, file attach or message to:
