What in Sanity are WE Doing!?!
                                 By Frank Vest
                                  1:124/6308.1

It's apparent that many people on all sides have opinions on war,
treaties, violations, right and wrong and such. There are protest for
and against anything that is done, or not done, or done some way other
     than....

This is a protest article. No, I'm not protesting war. I'm protesting
insanity. These are my views and opinions. Take them for what you feel
     they are worth.

The world today has cancer, aids, starvation and other bad things.
Yet, we claim that we are civilized and intelligent. Advanced and
technically superior to whatever. What do we do with this superiority?

We take germs and plagues that were all but wiped out by our
forefathers and make them more resistant. We threaten to use these
against our fellow man because of some fear that our fellow man will
use something against us. Don't we have enough disease in the world?

Each nation, country, race, religion or whatever, justifies their
actions by claiming some religious belief that is interpreted by
someone from somewhere in time past from some manuscript that was
translated by order of some government that was in power at that time.

There is enough food grown in the world to feed the world twice over.
Yet there are men, women and children that go hungry because there is
no profit in providing them food. The world watches as people starve.

There is enough technology on the planet Earth to find cures for many
ailments. Yet the people of this planet Earth watch as their fellow
man dies from these ailments because there is no profit in it.

We, of the planet earth, call ourselves "human". I think we are
closer to what Star Trek calls Ferengi. If it doesn't profit us, make
us important, or give us control we aren't interested.

If this is "human", how can I resign from the human race?

I read daily about some justification for this and that conflict. I
read about who is at fault and who is bad or good. Who did what and
all the other opinions. Good Grief! What in Sanity are WE Doing!?!

We humans put money and profit above life. Then we call on our
religion to justify this. We watch someone die from starvation or
disease, then pray for our God to help the sick and afflicted. As long
as it doesn't cost us anything, right?

I'm sure that some "educated" people are going to read this and claim
that I'm writing about this or that country, nation, race or religion.

When you do, stop and look in the mirror.

When you sit down later this day and write that message about who is
right or wrong, good or evil or whatever, think about it a bit more.
Animals kill for food. Humans kill for sport, profit, religion and
control. Yet humans claim that animals are "wild". Animal fight for
power. Humans claim to be better than animals. Yet humans fight for
     control, power, sport, profit.

Why don't we just "push the RED button" and do this planet a favor?

I wonder if the human race /CAN/ survive.

                            Programming for Fidonet
                                 By Frank Vest
                                  1:124/6308.1

A few articles back, I talked about the "Internet Traffic Jam". In
the article, I mentioned advances in technology and, of course,
     Fido. :)

Some years ago, a couple of guys placed an electric typewriter in
front of a tv screen, crossed a few wires, fried some transistors,
resistors, capacitors and such.... The first user usable PC was born.

Programmers came to this new "toy" and wrote programs to do all kinds
of amazing things. Along with all these amazing new programs, the dog
we know as Fido was born. Fido was "cutting edge" technology. People
could communicate around the world via their PC. I'll spare you a
review of the "Internet Traffic Jam". This is about programming for
     Fidonet.

Something that glares out at me today is the claim that programming
for Fidonet and FTN is hard, boring, not interesting, too old
fashioned and other excuses. Since I'm not a programmer, I'm sure
there will be the claim that I don't know what I'm talking about. Ok,
fine. I can live with that. I still don't see the problem with
     programming for Fidonet.

Yes, Fido, Fidonet and FTN are old. What started out as exciting and
fun, has aged into what is now claimed as old a boring. I've just got
to ask why... and try to answer that question. For this article, let's
call Fidonet Technology mature instead of "old", shall we?

With time and learning, many things mature. Computer technology is no
different. With maturity, generally, comes a more solid foundation.
Sometimes things become more ridged, set in their ways and
unchangeable, but that doesn't have to be the case. A lot depends on
     how something matures.

Computer technology has matured a lot since the days of "Basic",
"CPM", "Assembler" and other programming languages. As I said, I'm not
a programmer. I did play with Basic and CPM years ago. I've also
forgotten most of that. I might be able to write a four page program
to say "Hi!" if I were given the time and did a lot of study. ;-)

Anyway, mature doesn't always mean "unchanging" or "unchangeable".
What it can mean is solid, tried and true and other such descriptions.

Now, what is so boring about programming for Fidonet?

I hear that the old message bases are hard to program for. Jam and
Squish are just more of the same old technology and boring or hard to
program for. Programmers want exciting and new technology to program
for. Stuff like Java, Perl, SQL and such. Ok. Write a mail tosser to
     FIDONEWS 20-17 Page 5 28 Apr 2003

use a SQL data base. Write a BBS program to use that SQL data base.
Come up with a message editor for BBSs that uses SQL.

There's no rule that says the message base /MUST/ be Jam, Squish or
any other "standard". The main thing is that there be supporting
     programs for whatever is used.

With a BBS, or at least a Tosser and editor, that uses the same
formats that web based BBS (message forums) use, Fidonet could toss to
and from these programs easily and move forward fast.

The point is: Programming, Fidonet, FTN are just like anything else.
They're as exciting or boring, hard or easy, as you make them. What
will you, the programmer, make them?

                                 Error Messages
Taken from a Newsgroup by Frank Vest
                                  1:124/6308.1

The Error message below was posted in hopes of getting some help.
Names are blanked out to protect.

"!ILLEGAL FILENAME ATTEMPT by *****: Full Metal Panic - 24 [AJ AKU
     APX].avi"

Being in a strange mood that day, I found this rather humorus. I
replied that it would make a good "error" message if worded:

"Full Metal Panic! Can not continue. System halted!"

Someone else was bored and in a strange mood as well and replied with
the following. I thought it might be of interest to the humor
     department. :)

     ===
Okay, I was bored and came up with a few "error messages":

Error made when you move a PC from one location to another and
     something goes wrong:
SHIT - System Halted in Transit

Virus or trojan takes over your machine:
CRAP - Command Replaced Application Pointers
CRUD - Computer Refusing User Direction

Other error messages that might spring up:
SCUM - System Cannot Undo Mishap
MSFT - Unknown drivers not recognized, system in MiSFiT mode.
LINX - Unknown drivers not recognized, system in Locked IN
             non-Xwindow mode.

New or budding Sysop error messages:
      LAZY - Default settings detected.
EGO - Default settings changed TO default settings.
RTFM - System detected user trying multiple items w/o regard for the
             obvious.
      TWIT - <insert your fav here>
DOVE - System detected multiple personalities from same user account.

                                PIG !!
Sent in by Ward Dossche <wd@skynet.be>

Saddam Hussein and his chauffeur were rolling down the highway when
suddenly they hit a pig crossing the road. They killed it instantly.
Saddam tells his driver: "Go to da farm over dere and hexplain to da
     honer of da pig whatappened."

One hour later, Saddam sees his driver coming back from the farm, his
clothes all wrinkled, a bottle of wine in one hand and a cigar in the
other. "What appen to you?", he asks.

"Well, the farmer gave me a bottle of wine, his wife, the cigar and
their 19-year-old daughter made wild passionate love to me."

"My God! What did you tell dem?" asked Hussein.

The driver answered: "Good evening, I am Saddam Hussein's chauffeur
and I have just killed the pig."

                            How to Submit an Article

If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
     will appear in the Fidonews:

     a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
        probably quite OK...

     b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
        personal comments.

     c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.

Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..

     Ideas for Subject areas:

         Subject File | Subject File
     ----------------------------------|----------------------------------
From the *C's *.css | Rebuttals to articles *.reb
Fidonet Regional News *.reg | Fidonet Net News *.net
Retractions *.rtx | General Fidonet Articles *.art
Guest Editorial *.gue | Fidonet Current Events *.cur
Fidonet Interviews *.inv | Fidonet Software Reviews *.rev
Fidonet Web Page Reviews *.web | Fidonet Notices *.not
Getting Fidonet Technical *.ftc | Question Of The Week *.que
Humor in a Fido Vein *.hfv | Comix in ASCII *.cmx
Fidonet's Int. Kitchen *.rec | Poet's Corner *.poe
Clean Humor & Jokes *.jok | Other Stuff *.oth
Fidonet Classified Ads *.ads | Corrections *.cor
      Best of Fidonet *.bof |

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.

If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
