The Facts of the Opposition on Iraq
                        wdbonner@pacbell.net

Just in case you wondered why there is some opposition, here and in
other countries, here are the hard facts. Facts on Who Benefits
From Keeping Saddam Hussein In Power.

France: According to the CIA World Factbook, France controls over
     22.5 percent of Iraq's imports.
     (1) French total trade with Iraq under the oil-for-food
program is the third largest, totaling $3.1 billion since 1996,
     according to the United Nations.
     (2) In 2001 France became Iraq's largest European trading partner.
Roughly 60 French companies do an estimated $1.5 billion in trade
with Baghdad annually under the U.N.
     oil-for-food program.
     (3) France's largest oil company, Total Fina Elf, has negotiated a
deal to develop the Majnoon field in
western Iraq. The Majnoon field purportedly contains up to 30
     billion barrels of oil.
     (4) Total Fina Elf also negotiated a deal for future oil exploration
in Iraq's Nahr Umar field. Both the Majnoon and Nahr Umar fields are
estimated to contain as much as
25 percent of the country's reserves.
     (5) France's Alcatel company, a major telecom firm, is negotiating a
$76 million contract to rehabilitate Iraq's telephone system.
     (6) From 1981 to 2001, according to the Stockholm International
Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), France was responsible for over 13
     percent of Iraq's arms imports.

Germany : Direct trade between Germany and Iraq amounts to about
$350 million annually, and another $1 billion is reportedly sold
     through third parties.
     (1) It has recently been reported that Saddam Hussein has ordered
Iraqi domestic businesses to show preference to German companies as
a reward for Germany's "firm positive stand in rejecting the
     launching of a military
attack against Iraq." It was also reported that over 101 German
companies were present at the Baghdad Annual exposition.
     (2) During the 35th Annual Baghdad International Fair in November
     2002, a German company signed a contract for $80 million for 5,000
     cars and spare parts.
     (3) In 2002, Daimler Chrysler was awarded over $13 million in
contracts for German trucks and spare parts.
     (4) German officials are investigating a German corporation accused
of illegally channeling weapons to Iraq via Jordan. The equipment in
question is used for boring the barrels of large cannons and is
allegedly intended for Saddam Hussein's Al Fao Supercannon project.

Russia : According to the CIA World Factbook, Russia controls
roughly 5.8 percent of Iraq's annual imports.
     (1) Under the U.N. oil-for-food program, Russia's total trade with
     FIDONEWS 20-13 Page 3 31 Mar 2003

Iraq was somewhere between $530 million and $1 billion for the six
months ending in December of 2001.
     (2) According to the Russian Ambassador to Iraq,
Vladimir Titorenko, new contracts worth another $200 million under
the U.N. oil-for-food program are to be signed over the next three
     months.
     (3) Soviet-era debt of $7 billion through $8 billion
was generated by arms sales to Iraq during the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq
war. Russia's LUKoil negotiated a $4 billion, 23-year contract in
1997 to rehabilitate the 15 billion-barrel West Qurna field in
southern Iraq. Work on the oil field was expected to commence upon
     cancellation of U.N.
sanctions on Iraq. The deal is currently on hold.
     (4) In October 2001, Salvneft, a Russian-Belarus company, negotiated
a $52 million service contract to drill at the Tuba field in
     Southern Iraq.
     (5) In April 2001, Russia's Zaruezhneft company
received a service contract to drill in the Saddam, Kirkuk, and Bai
Hassan fields to rehabilitate the fields and reduce water incursion.
A future $40 billion Iraqi-Russian economic agreement, reportedly
signed in 2002, would allow for extensive oil exploration
     opportunities
     throughout western Iraq.
     (6) The proposal calls for 67 new projects, over a 10-year time
frame, to explore and further develop fields in southern Iraq and
the Western Desert, including the Suba,
Luhais, West Qurna, and Rumaila projects. Additional projects added
to the deal include second-phase construction of a pipeline running
from southern to northern Iraq, and extensive drilling and gas
projects. Work on these projects would commence upon cancellation of
     sanctions.
     (7) Russia's Gazprom company over the past few years
has signed contracts worth $18 million to repair gas stations in
     Iraq.
     (8) The former Soviet Union was the premier supplier of
Iraqi arms. From 1981 to 2001, Russia supplied Iraq with 50 percent
     of its arms.

China : According to the CIA World Factbook, China controls roughly
5.8 percent of Iraq's annual imports.
     (1) China National Oil Company, partnered with China North
Industries Corp., negotiated a 22-year-long deal for future oil
exploration in the Al Ahdab field in southern Iraq.
     (2) In recent years, the Chinese Aero-Technology Import-Export
Company (CATIC) has been contracted to sell "meteorological
     satellite" and "surface observation"
equipment to Iraq. This contract was approved by the U.N.
     oil-for-food program.
     (3) CATIC also won approval from the U.N. in July 2000 to sell $2
million worth of fiber optic cables. This and similar contracts
approved were disguised as telecommunications gear. These cables
can be used for secure data and communications links between
national command and control centers and long-range search radar,
targeting radar, and missile-launch units, according to U.S.
officials. In addition, China National Electric Wire & Cable and
China National Technical Import Telecommunications Equipment Company

are believed to have sold Iraq $6 million and $15.5 million worth of
communications equipment and other unspecified supplies,
     respectively.
     (4) According to a report from SIPRI, from 1981 to 2001, China was
the second largest supplier of weapons and arms to Iraq, supplying
over 18 percent of Iraq's weapons imports.

This CIA WORLD FACT book lets us analyze the rantings of the "NO WAR
FOR OIL" dissidents in ALL countries. The FACTS make their howlings
hollow. Saddam Hussein's shooting of his people in the back when
they surrender to the Allied forces is evil as his heart!

I realize that this is not a Fidonet subject, but a world wide
subject, which Fidonews is as a international newsletter subject
too. Everyone should have the facts of things that are
     international in scope.

                   FTSC-Chair election ... it's final now.
                       By Ward Dossche @ 2:292/854

The last phase in the election of the FTSC-Chair has come to an end.

Up till 23h59m March 30th 2003 it was possible to file complaints
against the outcome of the FTSC-Chair election.

Not a single protest was received in either netmail nor e-mail to my
     private address.

It means that the outcome of the election is final and Scott Little is
now definitely the FTSC Chair. His mandate as per FTA1001 expires on
     March 30th 2005.

Here terminates my mandate to supervise this election.

     Thank you for your confidence.

                               Aunt karen
                          wdbonner@pacbell.net

The teacher gave her class an assignment: Have their parents tell
them a story with a moral. The next day the kids returned with their
     stories.

Ashley said, "I live on a farm and we have a lot of hens. One time
     we
were taking our eggs to market when my little brother dropped the
basket and they all broke. So the moral of this story is, 'Don't put
all your eggs in one basket!'"

     "Very good," said the teacher.

Next Sarah raised her hand and said, "Our family are farmers too,
but we raise chickens for meat. We had a dozen eggs one time,
but when they hatched we only got five live chicks. The moral is,
'Don't count your chickens before they hatch!'"

"Very good, Sarah. Now Little Johnny, do you have a story?"

"My daddy told me this story about Aunt Karen. She was a fighter
pilot in Desert Storm and her plane got hit. She had to bail out
     over
enemy territory. And all she had was a bottle of whiskey, a machine
gun and a machete. She drank the whiskey on the way down so it
wouldn't break, then she landed in the middle of 100 Iraqi troops.
She killed 70 of them with the machine gun until she ran out of
bullets, then she killed 20 more with the machete till the blade
broke. Then she chased down and strangled the last 10 with her
     bare hands."

"Good heavens," said the horrified teacher, "what kind of moral did
your daddy tell you from that horrible story?"

"Stay the hell away from Aunt Karen when she's been drinking!"

Jacob, age 92, and Rebecca, age 89, are all excited about their
decision to get married. They go for a stroll to discuss the wedding
and on the way they pass a drugstore. Jacob suggests they go in.
Jacob addresses the man behind the counter: "Are you the owner?"
     The pharmacist answers "Yes".

Jacob: "We're about to get married. Do you sell heart medication?"
     Pharmacist: "Of course we do."

Jacob: "How about medicine for circulation?" Pharmacist: "All kinds"

     "Definitely"

Jacob: "How about Viagra?" Pharmacist: "Of course."

Jacob: "Medicine for memory problems, arthritis, Jaundice?"
Pharmacist: "Yes, a large variety. The works."

Jacob: "What about vitamins, sleeping pills, Geritol, antidotes for
     Parkinson's disease?" Pharmacist: "Absolutely."

Jacob: "You sell wheelchairs and walkers?"
     Pharmacist: "All speeds and sizes."

Jacob says to the pharmacist: "We'd like to register here for our

                                             MOTHER'S

A woman named Emily, renewing her driver's license at the County
Clerk's office, was asked by the woman recorder to state her
occupation. She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself. "What
I mean is," explained the recorder, "do you have a job, or are you
     just a .....?" "Of course I have a job," snapped Emily. "I'm a
     mother."

"We don't list 'mother' as an occupation...'housewife' covers it,"
     said the recorder emphatically.

I forgot all about her story until one day I found myself in the
     same
situation, this time at our own Town Hall. The Clerk was obviously
a career woman, poised, efficient, and possessed of a high
sounding title like, "Official Interrogator" or "Town Registrar."
"What is your occupation?", she probed.

What made me say it, I do not know. The words simply popped out.
"I'm a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and
     Human Relations."

The clerk paused, ball-point pen frozen in midair, and looked up as
though she had not heard right.

I repeated the title slowly, emphasizing the most significant words.
Then I stared with wonder as my pronouncement was written in
bold, black ink on the official questionnaire.

"Might I ask," said the clerk with new interest, "just what you do
     in
     your field?"

Coolly, without any trace of fluster in my voice, I heard myself
     reply,
     FIDONEWS 20-13 Page 8 31 Mar 2003

"I have a continuing program of research, in the laboratory and in
     the
field. I'm working for my Masters, and already have four credits,
     (all
daughters). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the
humanities, (any mother care to disagree?) and I often work 14
hours a day. But the job is more challenging than most run-of-the-
mill careers and the rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than
     just money."

There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk's voice as she
completed the form, stood up, and personally ushered me to the
     door.

As I drove into our driveway, buoyed up by my glamorous new
career, I was greeted by my lab assistants - ages 13, 7, and 3.
Upstairs I could hear our new experimental model, (a 6 month old
baby), in the child-development program, testing out a new vocal
     pattern.

I felt triumphant! I had scored a beat on bureaucracy! And I had
gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and
indispensable to mankind than "just another mother."

     Motherhood.....What a glorious career! Especially when there's a
     title on the door.

Does this make grandmothers "Senior Research Associates in the
field of Child Development and Human Relations" and great
grandmothers Executive Senior Research Associates"? I think so!!!
I also think it makes Aunts "Associate Research Assistants."

Please send this to another Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, and other
friends you know! They will be delighted with their "new" position
     in life!

                            How to Submit an Article

If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
     will appear in the Fidonews:

     a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
        probably quite OK...

     b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
        personal comments.

     c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.

Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..

     Ideas for Subject areas:

         Subject File | Subject File
     ----------------------------------|----------------------------------

Fidonet Classified Ads *.ads | Corrections *.cor
      Best of Fidonet *.bof |

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.

If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
