                     The Fidonews at a Glance

Some news from Frank Vest about a "Net382 Get Together" first out this
week. It's ever so nice to hear about actual get togethers amongst
fidonet people, let's hear more about stuff like that from other parts
     of our network, please!

The Australian rally goes on, now on its third day. A rather short
episode of the "2002 Off Centre Rally - The Big U".

Dish of the day is "Crock-O-Magic", Carol cleans her fridge from
all the leftovers and turns it into one big dish.

In the Poet's section we can read about "Parent's poetry". Once
again it's an author unknown, let's hope we wont get into trouble with
the somewhat strange copyright rules of the US over this one.

Submitted by Henk den Adel is a big collection of variations of
good ol' Murphy and his famous law. It's called "MURPHY AGAIN" and can
be found in the jokes section together with "Kids do the Darndest",
another collection, this one of things that an anonymous mother from
Texas learned from her kids. The collection submitted by Warren
     Bonner.

2002 Off Centre Rally - The Big U
               Submitted by David Drummond, 3:640/305

Day 3 - Tuesday 6th August (Theodore to Fairburn Dam)

Met Rick at the intersection of the main road and the Cracow road. He
had a good look at the oil leak and decided it was the oil pressure
switch. We thought it probably looked worse than it was.

Took the shortcut road from Theodore to Moura which had a bit of dirt
on it. At Moura, we stopped for morning tea at the bakery, rang our
friend Peter who used to live nearby to tell him where we were. Then
we rang Morgan & Wacker to order a new oil pressure switch to be sent
on to Mt Isa. I would collect it the following Monday.

Rick collected his mobile phone messages - returning one from his real
estate agent who wanted to organise the demolition of part of the
house he was renting. He set them straight on that notion!

Stopped for lunch in the town rest area at Springsure, watched by a
one-legged magpie. Pushed on to Emerald, arriving mid-afternoon.
Found the camping shop after a tour of the CBD, but they didn't have
any suitable gas cylinders for Rick. Headed out to Fairburn Dam. It
was packed with caravans. Note: Next time, stay at one of the caravan
     parks in Emerald!

Had a severe headache which I tried to dull with Panadol.
Unfortunately the restaurant where we had planned to have dinner
wasn't open that evening. As I didn't feel up to cooking, we all made
do with roast pork rolls from the shop, just before the closed at 6pm.
The lady at the kiosk said that we could eat them on the desk over-
looking the lake, which turned out to be very pleasant.

                      FIDONET'S INTERNATIONAL KITCHEN
     =================================================================

                          Crock-O-Magic

           Yield: 8 Servings

1 ea Whole leek, wash and chop
           1 ea Leftover lettuce, chop
1 ea Fistfuls of leftover cabbage
           2 ea Chopped leftover carrots
           1 ea Wilting potato, chopped
1 ea Fistful leftover lima beans
           1 ea Leftover yellow/green squash
           1 ea Leftover turnip, chopped
1 ea Almost overripe tomato, chop
1 ea Apple, wilting, remove bad
                Spots and chop
1 ea Fistful dry rice or 1 cup
                Cooked rice
                Water to cover

This is true magic. Its called making food that you will like, out
of leftovers you would otherwise toss out. This recipe is spawned off
of one popular in the depression era. The trick is to toss everything
you have about to be no longer usable, into the crockpot and then
cover with water and slowcook it for 12 hours on low.

This one also takes well to the addition of leftover ribs, or just
the leftover rib bones for flavoring.

Nutritional information: Low fat, low sodium (pending on additions
     made), sugar-free.

Serve with a small portion of smoked salmon salad on stone ground
wheat crackers and a glass of iced tea.

       From the kitchen of: xxcarol

     =================================================================

                  Parent's poetry
          Passed on by warbond@netscape.net

My son came home from school one day,
with a smirk upon his face.
He decided he was smart enough,
to put me in my place.

"Guess what I learned in Civics Two,
     that's taught by Mr. Wright?
It's all about the laws today,
     The "Children's Bill of Rights."

It says I need not clean my room,
don't have to cut my hair.
No one can tell me what to think,
or speak, or what to wear.

     I have freedom from religion,
     and regardless what you say,
I don't have to bow my head,
and I sure don't have to pray.

I can wear earrings if I want,
and pierce my tongue & nose.
I can read & watch just what I like,
and get tattoos from head to toes.

And if you ever spank me,
I'll charge you with a crime.
I'll back up all my charges,
with the marks on my behind.

     Don't you ever touch me,
my body's only for my use,
not for your hugs and kisses,
     that's just more child abuse.

     Don't preach about your morals,
like your Mama did to you.
That's nothing more than mind control,
     And it's illegal too!

Mom, I have these children's rights,
     so you can't influence me,
or I'll call Children's Services Division,
     better known as C.S.D.

Of course my first instinct was
To toss him out the door.
But the chance to teach him a lesson
made me think a little more.
     FIDONEWS 19-39 Page 8 30 Sep 2002

     I mulled it over carefully,
     I couldn't let this go.
A smile crept upon my face,
     he's messing with a pro.

The next day I took him shopping
     at the local Goodwill Store.
I told him, "Pick out all you want,
     there's shirts & pants galore.

I've called and checked with C.S.D.
     who said they didn't care
if I bought you K-Mart shoes
     instead of those Nike Airs.

     And I've canceled that appointment
     to take your driver's test.
     The C.S.D. is unconcerned
     so I'll decide what's best.

I said "No time to stop and eat,
or pick up stuff to munch.
And tomorrow you can start to learn
to make your own sack lunch.

     Just save the raging appetite,
     and wait till dinner time.
     We're having liver and onions,
     a favorite dish of mine.

He asked "Can I please rent a movie,
     to watch on my VCR?"
"Sorry, but I sold your TV,
for new tires on my car.

I also rented out your room,
     you'll take the couch instead.
     All the C.S.D. requires is
     a roof over your head.

Your clothing won't be trendy now,
and I'll choose what we eat.
That allowance that you used to get,
     will buy me something neat.

I'm selling off your jet ski,
     dirt-bike & roller blades.
Check out the "Parents Bill of Rights,"
     It's in effect today!

Hey hot shot, are you crying,
and why are you on your knees?
Are you asking God to help you out,
     instead of C.S.D..?

Your teacher, Mr. Wright is wrong,
     FIDONEWS 19-39 Page 9 30 Sep 2002

They love and care for your every need,
as long as you share that love with them.

     Unnecessary items never get lost

     Osborns law
Variables aren't variable, constants tend to vary

     Beaches law
There aren't any identical parts that seem to be the same.

Willoughby law, also known as 'the demonstration effect'
The moment you want to demonstrate a working solution, it will no
     longer work.

     Bittons law
The moment you understand its principles of operation, the item is
     obsolete

The law of the selective gravity
An object falls to a spot where it causes maximum damage

     Paul's law
You can not drop from the floor

     Chapmans comment on Paul's law
It will take three years of their lives for children to master Paul's
     law.

     De Vries dilemma
If you hit two keys of your typewriter simultaneously, the wrong one
     will hit the paper.

     The theory of selective supervision
The moment of your coffee break coincides with the moment your
     boss enters your room.

     Shapiro's law
The guy that does the least effort, will receive the highest wages.

     Harvard's law
Under carefully controlled circumstances regarding pressure,
temperature, volume, humidity and other variables, organisms will do
     what they like.

     Young's law
     All major discoveries are accidental

     Brooke's law
The same moment a system is completed, some nutcase discovers a new
effect, which renders the system useless or completely
     unrecognisable.

The first law of working in a lab
Hot glass looks the same as cold glass.

     The fifth law of unreliability
Making errors is in the human nature, however if you want to screw up
     entirely, use a computer.

     Einstein's observation
As far as mathematical formulae refer to the real world, they are not
flawless; as far as they are flawless, the don't refer to the real
     world.

The law of survival for lectures
Keep a low profile, the lecturer will not notice you.

     Ville's law for teachers
Nobody is listening, until you make a mistake.

     The working class dilemma
     1. Whatever you do, it is never enough
     2. The things you don't do, are always more important than the
        things you're doing.

     Conways law
In every organisation there is always one man that really knows how
the organisation runs. He is the first one in line to be fired.

     Kushners law
The probability some one does something wrong, is inversely
proportional to the number of people to do it correctly.

     Johns observation
In order to get a mortgage, you have to prove you don't need one.

     Weilers law
Nothing is impossible for the one that has not have to do it himself.

     Weinbergs second law
If contractors would build in the same way as programmers write their
programs, any woodpecker would cause the collapse of civilisation.

     The rule of bedfellows
The snoring party will fall asleep first.

     Meaders law
If a mishap crosses your path, any friend or member of your family
has experienced the same, only worse.

     Van Goghs law
The necessary appreciation for an artist will grow after his death.

     Liebermans law
Everybody is lying, however it does not matter, since nobody
     listens.

     Finmans principle of clearance sales
The article you want, is never on sale

     Glasers law
If it reads: uni-size, it won't fit anyone.

     Observations of telephone
     1. The phone rings when you are outside struggling to find your keys

     2. When you pick up the hook, you are just in time to hear the other
        one disconnecting.
     3. When dialling the wrong number, it is never busy

     First law of cycling
Whatever road you choose, the wind is always head-on

     Pinto's law
When you do some one a favour, from that moment on it will be your
     duty.

     Lerman's observation on technology
Any technical problem can be solved, provided there is enough time
and money. Neither of them is ever provided.

     Bells law
The moment your body is entirely submerged in your bath, the phone
     rings

     Phillips these
4-wheel drive means that your car will get stuck where even a tow
     truck can't reach you.

     Heeres' law
     New clothes attract dirt

     Otto Bochs observation:
     Murphy was an optimist

     The law of breaking symmetry
A cylindrically symmetric object will fit in its hole in just one
     way.

     The law of numerical iterations
The initial value for a Newton-Raphson iteration will tend to be one
of the many extreme values of the function.

     The law of array calculations
Hermitic arrays will end up with entirely complex diagonal elements.

     Menalda's law
     1 + 1 is hardly ever equal to 2

     The law of selective direction:
A buttered slice of bread will fall with the butter facing the
     ground.

     The law of the police
Officers of the law are always in the wrong place. When your car is
stolen, there are gone to a congregation in Oslo, however if you
forget to fill up the parking meter in Oslo, the annual congregation
of law enforcing officers is held in the same street.

     Queuing theory

     Sigstads law

If its your turn, they change the rules.

     Etorre's observation
     The other queue runs faster

     O'Brien variant
Etorre's observation will hold, even if you switch queues.

     Queuing principle
The possibility you are waiting in the wrong queue is proportional to
     its length.
When rushing to a shorter queue, it instantly changes into a long
     queue.
If your queue is long, people behind you will be sent to a short
     queue.
If you step out for a brief moment, your queue grows exponentially.
If you are in a short queue, people will have many family and friends

     Murphy's law in electronics:

     1) The most expensive part protects the cheapest part. A CRT of 100
Euro burns down to protect a 1 eurocent fuse against blowing.
     2) When unscrewing a box, your Philips screwdriver is missing.
     3) When closing a box with screws, you will notice that you had to
pull the security switch at the moment the last screw is in place.
     4) When closing a box with 14 screws, you will notice that you have
forgotten to insert the wafers, when doing the 13th screw.
     5) When you have to close a box with N screws, N-1 are available.
     6) If you service a radar installation, you will end up with
        something vital as a modulator.
     7) Any amplifier will oscillate
     8) Any oscillator will just amplify
     9) When interchanged, they will do what they are meant to do.
     10) If N transistors are needed for a specific circuitry, N-1 are on
         stock
     11) The time of delivery for parts not in stock is proportional to
the importance they have in the circuitry.
     12) There are no replacements for parts not in stock.
     13) A falling screwdriver will home in on the most expensive part of
         the circuitry.
     14) A paperclip will land with its backside on the - pole of the
battery and the front side on the + pole. In some fortunate cases
it only will short circuit the battery.
     15) The pins for the anode and the cathode are switched in
replacements. The same holds for the shield and the grid.

Murphy in astronomy and related space exploration
     1) The transmitter responsible for the data transmission will break
        down at launch.
     2) When a satellite arrives in orbit around Mars, two days earlier a
        dust storm has risen.
     3) Sagans first lemma: dust storms are generated by the presence of
        satellites
     4) When the dust storm settles, the batteries of the satellite are
flat and the solar panels are covered with meteorite dust.

     5) Sagans second lemma: dust storms on Mars are being driven by the
        batteries of the satellite.
     6) Sagans third lemma: meteorite dust protects solar panels against
        the vicious solar radiation.
     7) When a satellite has to transmit important information, maintenance
is being performed on the only receiving station in range of the
        satellite.
     8) During solar eclipses it is completely clouded.
     9) Impacts of comets on Jupiter coincide with the national holiday on
        Hawaii.
     10) Meteor clouds tend to occur around the full moon.

                       Kids do the Darndest
                  Anonymous Mother, Austin Texas
          Submitted by Warren Bonner, <wdbonner@pacbell.net>

Things I've learned from my children (honest & no kidding)

      1) A king size waterbed holds enough water to fill a 2000 sq. ft.
         house 4 inches deep.
      2) If you spray hairspray on dust bunnies and run over them with
         roller blades, they can ignite!
      3) A 3-year olds voice is louder than 200 adults in a crowded
         restaurant.
      4) If you hook a dog leash over a ceiling fan, the motor is not
strong enough, to rotate a 42 pound boy wearing Batman
underwear and a Superman cape. It is strong enough,
however, if tied to a paint can, to spread paint on all four
         walls
         of a 20 x 20 foot room.
      5) You should not throw baseballs up when the ceiling fan is on.
When using a ceiling fan as a bat, you have to throw the ball
up a few times before get a hit. A ceiling fan can hit a
         baseball a long way.
      6) The glass in windows (even in double-pane) doesn't stop a
         baseball hit by ceiling fan.
      7) When you hear the toilet flush and the words "uh oh," it's
         already too late.
      8) Brake fluid mixed with Clorox makes smoke, and lots of it.
      9) A six-year old can start a fire with flint rock even though a 36-
year old man says they can only do it in the movies.
     10) Certain Lego's will pass through the digestive tract of a 3-
         year old.
     11) Play Dough and microwave should not be used in the same
         sentence.
     12) Super glue is forever.
     13) No matter how much Jell-o you put in a swimming pool you
         still can't walk on water.
     14) Pool filters do not like Jell-o.
     15) VCR's do not eject PB&J sandwiches even though TV
         commercials show they do.
     16) Garbage bags do not make good parachutes.
     17) Marbles in gas tanks make lots of noise when driving.
     18) You probably do not want to know what that odor is.
     19) Always look in the oven before you turn it on. Plastic toys
         do not like ovens.
     20) The fire department in Austin, TX has a 5-minute response
         time.
     21) The spin cycle on the washing machine does not make
         earthworms dizzy.
     22) It will, however, make cats dizzy.
     23) Cats throw up twice their body weight when dizzy.
     24) The mind of a 6-year old is wonderful.
     25) It is also mischievous, daring, exploratory and adamant.

                            How to Submit an Article

If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
     will appear in the Fidonews:

     a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
        probably quite OK...

     b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
        personal comments.

     c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.

Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..

     Ideas for Subject areas:

         Subject File | Subject File
     ----------------------------------|----------------------------------

Fidonet Classified Ads *.ads | Corrections *.cor
      Best of Fidonet *.bof |

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.

If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
