                     The Fidonews at a Glance

The editorial this week is about a special child that's turned 17
recently, "Happy 17", with some thoughts about the past and the
     future.

On the menu from our international kitchen is today "Brie, Pepper,
and Onion Soda Bread", Carol is our cook as usual. Or rather baker, as
it's a bread. Please note that the 450 degrees in the recipe are
Fahrenheit, or else the bread may turn rather dark I guess.

We also have a poem from Warren Bonner about a very special garden,
"The Garden" and a joke from the very same author, "New Restaurant",
that maybe is about himself, I don't know. :)

                             Happy 17

I got this wonderful little letter the other day:

                   - - - - - - - - -

Did you know that FidoNet is 17 years old as of last May? It's hard to
believe that it is alive and still kicking. I know since my son was
the FidoBaby documented in FidoNews Archives who was born the same
month we released FidoNet. Eric is now in his senior year of High
School. It is nice to see that FidoNet is still reaching out to so
many that might otherwise never be able to touch the internet.

                   - - - - - - - - -

Now, isn't it strange how fast the years go by. For at least those
of us, that were old already in the first years of Fidonet, it seems
     almost like yesterday.

But then we start to think about those long gone years and suddenly
realize such things, like how old our kids were by then, and it all
     really comes into perspective.

That the equipment we were using by then was completely different,
and so was the software, is another thing. The ones we are using
today, are something we couldn't even dream about than, and even if we
were told by a Michael J. Fox passing by to some distant time, we
probably wouldn't even understand what he was talking about. "80Gb
harddisk and 512Mb RAM, colour graphics cards with 64Mb memory and
2GHz processor clocks, whatever would we need something like that
     for?"

One can only wonder what the future may have in store for us. What
hard- and software will we be using in another 17 years, and, even
more interesting perhaps, will Fidonet still exist and, if so, what
     will it look like?

                      FIDONET'S INTERNATIONAL KITCHEN
     =================================================================

Brie, Pepper, and Onion Soda Bread

           Yield: 6 Servings

2 c Flour, white all purpose
           1 ts Salt
         1/3 c Butter
1 c Slivered brie (or small bits
         1/2 c Fine chopped onion
           1 tb Black pepper
         2/3 c Milk
           1 tb Baking soda

Start with all the dry ingredients and mix them well in a large
bowl. Now add the butter (softened but not melted) and chop that into
the mix as well as you reasonably can. Add the remaining ingredients
and mix to a dough. Using a preheated oven (always preheat when making
bread or fish!) bake at 450 degrees for about 25 minutes.

You can actually use any cheese I can think of for this (if using
cottage cheese, add a bit more flour if it seems to 'wet') and you may
want to vary the spice used to match the cheese type. The onions are
     optional.

                     The Garden
                  By Warren Bonner
                 wdbonner@pacbell.net

          Plant three rows of peas:
          Peace of mind
          Peace of heart
          Peace of soul

          Plant four rows of squash
          Squash gossip
          Squash indifference
          Squash grumbling
          Squash selfishness

          Plant four rows of lettuce
          Lettuce be faithful
          Lettuce be kind
          Lettuce be happy
          Lettuce really love one another

No garden should be without turnips
          Turnip for service when needed
          Turnip to help one another
          Turnip the music and dance

          Water freely with patience and
          Cultivate with love.
There is much fruit in your garden
because you reap what you sow

To conclude our garden we must have thyme
          Thyme for fun
          Thyme for rest
          Thyme for ourselves.

Pretty nice garden dont you think?

                               New Restaurant
                              By Warren Bonner
                            wdbonner@pacbell.net

An elderly couple had dinner at another couple's house, and after
eating the wives left the table and went into the kitchen.

The two elderly gentlemen were talking, and one said, "Last night we
went out to a new restaurant, and it was really great. I would
     recommend it very highly."

The other man said, "What is the name of the restaurant?"

The first man thought and thought and finally said, "What is the name
of that flower you give to someone you love? You know... the one that
     is red and has thorns."

     "Do you mean a rose?"

"Yes," the man said. He turned toward the kitchen and yelled, "Rose,
what's the name of that restaurant we went to last night?"

                            How to Submit an Article

If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
     will appear in the Fidonews:

     a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
        probably quite OK...

     b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
        personal comments.

     c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.

Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..

     Ideas for Subject areas:

         Subject File | Subject File
     ----------------------------------|----------------------------------

Fidonet Classified Ads *.ads | Corrections *.cor
      Best of Fidonet *.bof |

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.

If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
