                     The Fidonews at a Glance

In his article "Yes, there are still programmers in Fidonet", Michiel
Broek gives Frank an answer to the question he asked a week ago.
Michiel's solution does of course include changing OS to linux (if you
haven't already done so), but that wouldn't be a problem I think, and
     it's usually worth while.

"The Mighty Eastwind W279" is published in the Web Review column,
but really it is a request for a revision, this from Warren Bonner.

In his own column, Warren tells us the story behind all the symbols
on a one dollar bill, in "The Dollar Bill". I guess it helps if you
have a bill available plus a good magnifying glass, if not I'm sure
you can find a picture of it in some book or on the internet. It's
     really fascinating!

"Sashimi Bass Sings From the Sea" is the dish of the week, as usual
Carol is our cook. I guess one could call the dish pickled fish, but
that wouldn't give it full justice, believe me, it was very good, I've
     tried it.

And then we have a joke, that I'm, once again (your threading on
thin ice here, Warren :) not really sure how clean it is, "Mistaken
Identity", but, as usual, I'll let it pass this time too.

Yes, there are still programmers in Fidonet.
                              By Michiel Broek
                                2:280/2802

To solve the wish described by Frank Vest in Fidonews 19-32 there is a
free solution, only it doesn't run under Windows but it runs under
     Linux or FreeBSD.

One of the solutions is the MBSE BBS package, this is a bbs, Fidonet
mailer and utilities. The mailer is capable of answering normal
dial-up connections and can answer IP calls, binkp and ifcico
protocols. With the help of the normal ftp daemon on the Linux/FreeBSD
system it will also server FTP clients.

The bbs itself, can be called by normal dial-up users and if the
system is connected to the internet users can telnet to the bbs. On a
system that has modems, ISDN lines and a direct connection to the
internet (xDSL or cable) it is possible to let modem users telnet to
other internet bbs systems. The sysop operating such system needs only
to add the right menu entries that make the telnet connections. Now
you can let your local users call bbs systems all over the world for
     local phone costs.

Is this useful you might ask. This depends on your local situation. If
you have a lot of users that have no internet access for themselves,
you can save them the need to make international calls to use bbs
systems they normally would not call. User that have access to
internet don't need it because they can telnet themselves.

Will this also work on Windows systems you might ask? If someone
volunteers to port this package then yes. The better solution is to
switch to a Linux setup, it has a lot of stuff build in that makes
extra programs such as fossils, virtual modem drivers obsolete.

Under Linux/FreeBSD other services are easier to provide to your users
such as news and email. Internet users can browse to your bbs and
download files without logging in the bbs.

Now you might ask: are there any doors that I can use under Linux? To
be honest, very little. But there is a solution for this, dosemu, the
DOS emulator. This package is able to run most DOS doors without
modification, your users won't even notice that they are transferred
     to a DOS program.

When you check the internet and Fidonet echomail areas you will see
that there are still developments for Fidonet, both shareware and open
source software. Fidonet is not yet dead, it is just changing.

              Michiel.

                               The Dollar Bill
                               By Warren Bonner
                              wdbonner@pacbell.net

Take out a one dollar bill, and look at it. The one dollar bill you're
looking at first came off the presses in 1957 in its present design.
This so-called paper money is in fact a cotton and linen blend, with
red and blue minute silk fibers running through it. It is actually
material. We've all washed it without it falling apart. A special
blend of ink is used, the contents we will never know. It is
overprinted with symbols and then it is starched to make it water
resistant and pressed to give it that nice crisp look.

If you look on the front of the bill, you will see the United States
Treasury Seal. On the top you will see the scales for a balanced
budget. In the center you have a carpenter's square, a tool used for
an even cut. Underneath is the Key to the United States Treasury.
That's all pretty easy to figure out, but what is on the back of that
dollar bill is something we should all know.

If you turn the bill over, you will see two circles. Both circles,
together, comprise the Great Seal of the United States. The First
Continental Congress requested that Benjamin Franklin and a group of
men come up with a Seal. It took them four years to accomplish this
task and another two years to get it approved.

If you look at the left-hand circle, you will see a Pyramid. Notice
the face is lighted, and the western side is dark. This country was
just beginning. We had not begun to explore the West or decided what
we could do for Western Civilization. The Pyramid is un-capped, again
signifying that we were not even close to being finished. Inside the
capstone you have the all-seeing eye, an ancient symbol for divinity.
It was Franklin's belief that one man couldn't do it alone, but a
group of men, with the help of God, could do anything.

"IN GOD WE TRUST" is on this currency. The Latin above the pyramid,
ANNUIT COEPTIS, means, "God has favored our undertaking." The Latin
below the pyramid, NOVUS ORDO SECLORUM, means, "a new order has
begun." At the base of the pyramid is the Roman Numeral for 1776. If
you look at the right-hand circle, and check it carefully, you will
learn that it is on every National Cemetery in the United States. It
is also on the Parade of Flags Walkway at the Bushnell, Florida
National Cemetery, and is the centerpiece of most hero's monuments.
Slightly modified, it is the seal of the President of the United
States, and it is always visible whenever he speaks, yet very few
people know what the symbols mean.

The Bald Eagle was selected as a symbol for victory for two reasons:
First, he is not afraid of a storm; he is strong, and he is smart
enough to soar above it. Secondly, he wears no material crown. We had
just broken from the King of England. Also, notice the shield is
unsupported. This country can now stand on its own. At the top of that
     FIDONEWS 19-33 Page 6 19 Aug 2002

shield you have a white bar signifying congress, a unifying factor. We
were coming together as one nation. In the Eagle's beak you will read,
"E PLURIBUS UNUM", meaning, "one nation from many people".

Above the Eagle, you have thirteen stars, representing the thirteen
original colonies, and any clouds of misunderstanding rolling away.
Again, we were coming together as one. Notice what the Eagle holds in
his talons. He holds an olive branch and arrows. This country wants
peace, but we will never be afraid to fight to preserve peace. The
Eagle always wants to face the olive branch, but in time of war, his
     gaze turns toward the arrows.

They say that the number 13 is an unlucky number. This is almost a
worldwide belief. You will usually never see a room numbered 13, or
any hotels or motels with a 13th floor. But think about this: 13
original colonies, 13 signers of the Declaration of Independence, 13
stripes on our flag, 13 steps on the Pyramid, 13 letters in the
Latin above, 13 letters in "E Pluribus Unum", 13 stars above the
Eagle, 13 bars on that shield, 13 leaves on the olive branch, 13
fruits, and if you look closely, 13 arrows. And, for minorities: the
     13th Amendment.

It would be interesting if others of different countries would write a
similar short specification of their monetary bills, and/or countries.

     Ol'wdb

     =================================================================

Sashimi Bass Sings From the Sea

           Yield: 4 Servings

           2 tb Virgin olive oil
           1 tb Lemon juice
1 ts Basil leaves, fresh only!
           1 ts Chopped fresh coriander
20 oz Fresh raw Sea Bass, boneles

Ok, step one. That Bass must be *very fresh*. Swimming yesterday
is your aim, and if it wasnt swimming at the most 3 days ago, its way
too old for this! You can tell by smelling the fish. If it smells
more then faintly fishy, its too old. Bake it or do something else
     with it. Nuff said ok?

Now, you chop that fish up into bite size pieces. You can make the
slices look pretty such as the japanese do, or just hack them up.
Taste is the same. Mix the otjher ingredients, and pour over the fish
just before serving. If cutting fish ahead of time, store in a
zip-lock type bag separate from the sauce.

This can also be a side dish if your family doesnt eat much meat.
As such, it serves very well with a bowl of hot butter beans (dried
large lima beans) and rice. For a soup, consider Japanese Dashi or a
mild pumpkin/carrot puree. For a veggie, you cant beat steamed Bok
     Choy with this.

                      By Warren Bonner
                    wdbonner@pacbell.net

There is a merry family gathering with all generations around the
     table.

The little children (naughty little rascals) smuggle a Viagra tablet
     into Grandpa's drink.

After a while, Grandpa excuses himself because he has to go to the
     bathroom.

When he returns, however, his trousers are wet all over.

"What happened, Grandpa?" he is asked by his snickering children.

"Well, " he answers, "I had to go to the bathroom. So I took it out,
but then I saw that it wasn't mine, so I put it back.

      <Darn kids!>

                            How to Submit an Article

If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
     will appear in the Fidonews:

     a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
        probably quite OK...

     b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
        personal comments.

     c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.

Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..

     Ideas for Subject areas:

         Subject File | Subject File
     ----------------------------------|----------------------------------
From the *C's *.css | Rebuttals to articles *.reb
Fidonet Regional News *.reg | Fidonet Net News *.net
Retractions *.rtx | General Fidonet Articles *.art
Guest Editorial *.gue | Fidonet Current Events *.cur
Fidonet Interviews *.inv | Fidonet Software Reviews *.rev
Fidonet Web Page Reviews *.web | Fidonet Notices *.not
Getting Fidonet Technical *.ftc | Question Of The Week *.que
Humor in a Fido Vein *.hfv | Comix in ASCII *.cmx
Fidonet's Int. Kitchen *.rec | Poet's Corner *.poe
Clean Humor & Jokes *.jok | Other Stuff *.oth
Fidonet Classified Ads *.ads | Corrections *.cor

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.

If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
