Logout, author of the Bongusta Aggregator[1] has posted some existential musings[2] about the relevance of his program in light of some more recent listings that have cropped up in gopher space. As user kvothe noted[3], one of the most valuable aspects of Bongusta is the fact that it is curated. I don't know how it is setup in the background, or how the curation criteria are determined, but none of that matters to me as a user: the value is readily evident when I use Bongusta. It links me up to a wonderful and growing list of valuable thoughts. I wish I had the exact quote, but I can't presently find the phlog post that talked about the ephemeral nature of gopher; the author basically noted that the current experience we're all having with gopher is not something we can force to continue, but rather something that we must enjoy while it lasts. That rang true to me, and I'm trying to just take in what is happening right now in gopher land and bask in it. If Bongusta can live on, I'd love that. If Logout is ready to work on other things, I can accept that. But certainly, no list or tool that has come to light recently can replace a human curated treasure. (Though it might not apply much, I loved this quote from jynx that I found while searching for that phlog post on basking: "The next time you feel overwhelmed, take a deep breath. There is absolutely nothing that cannot be dealt with, beat, and put behind you."[4]) [1] gopher://i-logout.cz:70/1/en/bongusta [2] gopher://i-logout.cz:70/0/en/phlog/02-2018-phlog.txt [3] gopher://sdf.org:70/0/users/kvothe/phlog/2018/02/06-bongusta-is-bae [4] gopher://sdf.org:70/0/users/jynx/dat/20180129.post
