I finally renamed all of the files in my phlog so that the gopher server will serve them up in an order that makes sense. Thanks papa for the naming convention. Sorry to the readers of the Daily Batch for spamming the list... On that note, I was curious about the way Gophernicus (the gopher server in use on Grex) provides file listings. I first went to the RFC for the Gopher protocol (RFC 1436.) A cursory search on a few terms didn't reveal any sort of requirement for sort order. I also checked out the source for Gophernicus, which appears to arbitarily sort alphabetically, I don't really know why. At best, I would expect a Gopher server to have a default sort order based on the OS/filesystem default sort order. But it is more likely that the sort order is based entirely on the whims of the Gopher server author. Again, that's just how it appears to me, based on observation. And so, the filenaming convention works on servers that use Gophernicus, and that covers the largest ones I believe. I'm not sure about others.
