         -[ OS/2 Setting running on Global-Tech's Home BBS ]-

 I have included this file because when I first started running OS/2
 the window would close when RIPITUP! started to run SCAN.EXE. This no
 longer happens and I have found these settings to work rather well for
 the BBS. You may want to turm off EMS for SCAN.EXE in your command
 line also. I also run two other programs that seemed to help out alot.
 The first being Ray Gwinn's OS/2 com drivers. His drivers are a
 little more stable than the ones from IBM. Secondly, a little
 freeware program called OS/2-Speed. Basically, it tells DOS programs
 that are not OS/2 aware that Desqiew is running and to give up time
 slices if unneeded. RIU does this already and OS/2-Speed is NOT
 needed but you may want it for some BBS doors and such. The following
 is a list of the settings I run for the BBS. If they are not listed I
 did not change them from the default.

 The settings I have on my BBS that I have found to work WELL go against
 what I have read in the other SL documents put out concerning setting
 up OS/2 Warp. I am not saying this will work for everybody or that
 someone is wrong, it is just that this works excellent on my system and
 I get to use Windows and stuff again! While not losing a character in
 the background. I am sure someone out there is having the same problems.

Changes made to default Warp load:
\wh
 PMQSIZ.ZIP - \noThis program is run ONCE, after OS/2 starts but,
                before the Program Manager. It does a hex write to
                disk to alter the size of the system que size. QSIZE
                is programmable for different memory size configurations,
                I took the one he suggested. I saw a definite
                performance difference after installation.  Freeware.
\wh
 SIO145.ZIP   - \noRay Gwinn's OS/2 com drivers.  Shareware.
\wh
 OS2SPD.ZIP - \noOS/2-Speed Basically, it tells DOS programs that are
                not OS/2 aware that Desqview is running and to give up
                time slices if unneeded.  Freeware.
\wh
 ZSXD-310.ZIP - \noFossil driven X, Y, Z, and Sealink transfer protocols.
                Desqview aware, 55k overhead, data transfer rates at
                100% efficiency or better, usually 1650+ cps at 14.4 and
                3200+ cps at 28.8. I have HS/Link running too NO problems
                there either. Cardware - send the author a postcard :).

All these files are available on the Searchlight home BBS.

DOS settings for BBS:
EMS_HIGH_OS_MAP_REGION = 96 <- The key to not losing your
EMS_LOW_OS_MAP_REGION      = 576  <- sessions when SCAN.EXE runs, but I
                                     highly suggest another scanner.  I
                                     refuse to use it, it misses
                                     viruses.  Use F-PROT or/and Thunderbyte
HW_TO_ROM                  = ON
HW_TIMER                   = ON
IDLE_SECONDS               = 0
IDLE_SENSITIVITY = 98 <- If set to 100 you loose most your CPU
INT_DURING_IO              = ON   <- Has not presented a problem
SESSION_PRIORITY           = 1    <- No process anywhere gets better than 1
SIO_Allow_Access = On <- For current nodes com port only
SIO_Idle_Sensitivity = 100 <- If I take it down it hangs the BBS
SIO_Share_Access_with_OS/2 = OFF

My CONFIG.SYS has some of the following changes:

REM I only have 1 HPFS drive
IFS=C:\OS2\HPFS.IFS /CACHE:1024 /CRECL:4 /AUTOCHECK:E
REM Just use the startup folder when starting a normal OS/2 session
SET AUTOSTART=STARTUPFOLDERSONLY
PRIORITY_DISK_IO=NO
PRIORITY=DYNAMIC
SUPPRESSPOPUPS=C
FILES=50
REM I have 2 IDE drives and thats where the BBS is so... a larger cache
DISKCACHE=2048,LW,32,AC:CD
IOPL=YES
REM MAXWAIT at minimum to "make sure" BBS is always serviced
MAXWAIT=1
MEMMAN=SWAP,COMMIT
REM SWAP Larger than default
SWAPPATH=E:\ 4096 8192
REM BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD changed per IBM suggestion ????
BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD /A:0 /U:1 /SMS
PROTECTONLY=NO
DOS=LOW,NOUMB
RUN=C:\OS2\CACHE.EXE /MAXAGE:15000 /DISKIDLE:60000 /BUFFERIDLE:60000
REM QSIZE=50 added to allow mouse to que up more positions while CPU @ %100
DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\MOUSE.SYS SERIAL=COM1 QSIZE=50
REM SIO added the next 3 settings
REM Lock COM# at same speed as set in Config->Communication
DEVICE=C:\SIO\SIO.SYS (COM#:38400,,,)
DEVICE=C:\SIO\VSIO.SYS
DEVICE=C:\SIO\VX00.SYS

 Good luck I have seen the WIN 95 beta running....There is NO savior there!

 If I am just dead wrong about any of these settings please let me
 know, this is just what I have found to work here. I am by no means
 any kind of OS/2 expert or anything, but I have come to respect it.
