One of my pet peeves, when looking at software, is trying to identify
what it is. Usually I have to scan through a ton of documentation to
find out what the program is and what it does. So ...

WHAT IS DAY 9.10?

DAY 9.10 is a set of 12 data bases covering each month of the year.
It is a storehouse of birthdates, events, holidays, and obituaries.

HOW DO I RUN DAY 9.10?

There are two excellent programs to run DAY 9.10 on a DOS based
system. The best is NEWDAYPC in that it implements all of the features
of my data. NEWDAYPC has recently been updated after 5 years (Version
4.9 in March, 1995). TODAY is the original program by Patrick Kincaid
and although has been update in July, 1994, it still doesn't support
the features I desire (certain colors keys, randomness or limit of
events, not allowing for certain groupings (!,D,H,I,Y). Therefore
unless you are prepared to edit my files you may get some strange
results. With 9.10 I have bundled the latest version of Newdaypc in
DAY910-1, and the latest version of Today in DAY910-2.

OKAY, B-U-T HOW DO I RUN DAY 9.10?

You need DAY910-1.ZIP through DAY910-6.ZIP. You also need an unzipper
which is available on just about every DOS BBS. Unzip all the files
in a directory named TODAY. Unzip NEWDAYPC in the same directory.
Just type NEWDAYPC and you will get the days events (based on the date
set on your computer). IF you want a specific date type NEWDAYPC MMDD
(MMDD is the month and day (ie NEWDAYPC 0101 is for January 1).

HOW IS THE DATA STORED IN DAY 9.10?

The data is in pure ASCII and probably can be transported to any
computer. Each data item is one line long and follows a specified
format. The first character is either !,B,D,H,I,R,S or Y. (!-Printable
    information, B-Birth Date, D-Death Date, H-Holiday, I-
    Interfaith/Religious Day of Observance, R-Reminder, S-Special Event,
Y-Your Reminders). The next 8 characters (2-9) is a date (MMDDYYYY,
MMDD____ or MMDDMMDD (for scanning dates) The 10th character is either
"C" for continuation (2nd line of data) or a number (1-7) for a day of
week (1 being Sunday through 7-Saturday) The 11th-79th is the
    information for that date.

HOW MUCH IS DAY 9.10?

As in the past DAY 9.10 is offered ABSOLUTELY FREE (no-guilt).
NEWDAYPC and TODAY are not my products and there is a shareware fee to
use either, this is left to the users discretion. However, if you
really have to register DAY 9.10 you can send $18.18 or 1 or
whatever to the above address or to any charity. It's not that I
don't need the money, and I am certainly a capitalist but this is a
    hobby.

WHAT ARE THE LATEST VERSIONS OF NEWDAYPC/TODAY?

The last version of NEWDAYPC is 4.50c (Feb 3, 1989). I spoke to the
author Mike Ratledge on July 23, 1994 and he confirmed that to be the
last version. He is planning to re-write a new NEWDAYPC in C. His BBS
is permanently down and there is no date as to when this Newdaypc
version will be real. As to TODAY the original DOS shell, the latest
    version is 3.7 on June 24, 1994.

ARE THERE ANY FREE USAGE LIMITATIONS?

Yes, DAY 9.10 is the property of Bruce T. Goldman. It can not be
used for any gains without written permission from Bruce T. Goldman.
Also when used a credit line for Bruce T. Goldman must be given.
(Gee, I like typing my name).

HOW CAN I GET UPDATES?

Or better yet when is this thing updated? Being that this is a hobby,
I do not pressure myself to get this out on a deadline. As can be
seen by the history below. Although I am constantly working on this
project, the officially released updates are about a year apart.
Updates will be posted on many NYC BBSes and some good outer of NY BBS
sites. If you wish to get the updates by mail, you must send me (3)
1.44 3" DOS formatted disks and a SASE. I will hold on to them until
I am ready to release my next update. That can be a wait of many
months, but you will get it.

HOW CAN I HELP?

Send me more dates, corrections, etc. Spread the software and ENJOY!
Adopt a day or a month and error check it.

THE HISTORY OF DAY

    May-1-1996 Version 9.10

Thanks to more access on Internet, Iwas able to add a lot of new
entries. Updated the Dutch data to 5265, although I have data through
7314. There are well over 25,000 changes from version 9.09a. The
database contains over 120,000 items and is more then 7.6 megs!

    Aug-8-1994 Version 9.09a

Basically this was a clean up project. I corrected many typos. I
eliminated a number of duplicates and corrected some errounous
information. Despite the files being slightly smaller I added about
100 new lines and of course updated until today. There are over 2,000
    changes from 9.09.

    July-24-1994 Version 9.09

First some statistics. The update took about a year. There are over
29,000 changes (additions, modifications and deletions). The database
has swelled to nearly 105,000 items and over 6.5 megs.
. Obvious update of Aug, 1993 - present
. Added a couple of hundred country music stars.
. Worked around a flaw in the program by rewriting "Y" headers
. Updated through DATA4124 by John de Brouwer Koning (July, 1994)
. Added and corrected 100s of Playboy Playmates
. Birth & Death dates for about 6,000 composers
    . Wrestlers (including championships)
. Celebrity birthdates/obituaries by Mark Harding on Internet
    . Zen calendar on WAIS
. Added credits to most actress/actors/directors
. Started spelling corrections (using a spell checker on events)
. Bundled latest known versions of Today and Newdaypc

    Aug-21-1993 Version 9.08

Released on Aug 21, 1993, it adds or corrects over 15,600 items. The
data has increased to over 5 megs. Again special thanks to our
correspondent in Amsterdam, John Brouwer de Koning. Also thanks to
a program called BABYLON 3.0, which does a pretty good job of
translating Dutch to English. There are now more than 78,000 items
in the database. See you in 9.09!

    Nov-05-1992 Version 9.07b

Well, I did a check and noticed I screwed up TODAY.APR the same way
I screwed up TODAY.MAY (see Next paragraph). So I needed to update
DAY907-2.ZIP to DAY907a2.ZIP. So besides getting a fixed and updated
TODAY.APR you also get as a bonus updated TODAY.MAR. Hopefully these
are all the fixes till the next major release.

    Oct-31-1992 Version 9.07a

Version 9.07a updates only DAY907-3.ZIP to DAY907a3.ZIP. It seems
that I sent out TODAY.MAY with all the edit marks left in. As long
as I had to clean it, might as well add whatever new data came in.
. . . and since the ZIP is bundled with TODAY.JUN, it too was updated
Major additions are from CIVWAR.ZIP by Philip Scruggs & from my
niece Alyse Cutler. These will be more apparent when DAY 9.08 appears
    in mid 1993 (or whenever)
Although this version has come out 6 months after the last one, as of
now I .envision a .while for .the next one. .I will .continue .to
compile .data .and ask for your .help in .providing it, at the .above
    address and phone number.
CAUTION: If .using TODAY.EXE .the files will .need to be edited, .as
certain sequences are only available in NEWDAYPC.EXE. I have bundled
this with both TODAY35.ZIP and NEWDAY45.ZIP, the last known programs
made available. I am aware of a bug in NEWDAY 4.5. The "Y" option
doesn't perform as advertised (it's a bit buggy).
The data contained here is in straight ascii. It is historical and
educational and although the amount of hours I have worked at
compiling this is uncountable, I do NOT ask/beg for any remuneration.
    Use and enjoy it!
The data now takes about 4.4 meg!
To display the data, you will either need "TODAY" a program by Patrick
Kincaid, or my preference "NEWDAYPC" by Mike Ratledge. They are both
available via shareware. I have even seen some lesser products
available. If you don't have these programs, you can still enjoy it,
    through a word processor.

    Oct-25-1992 Version 9.07

Version 9.07 is released on Oct 25, 1992, it adds or corrects over
18,000 items. Major import comes from John T S Brouwer de Koning
who keeps a Dutch version. He also sent me a list of sci-fi authors
which is implemented in this version. I have begun to incorporate 3
new features. Highest and lowest temperatures in NYC (NY Daily News),
Day into the year and days left (based on standard years, it will be
okay from Jan 1, 1993 - Dec 31, 1995). The other new feature is the
numerology #. This is based by adding the numbers in the date to get
    a single digit (ie 0928 Sept 28 equals 9/28 which is 9+2+8=19; 19
becomes 1+9 = 10; 10 becomes 1+0=1). Also included in this go round
are dates that TV stations begin transmitting. Missing this time is
my collaborator Robert Braunwart, who, last I heard, moved from
Washington to Mexico. I think he is no longer interested in this
project. Believe it or not I still have a ton of his stuff (that
should have been included in 9.04) still to include. Talk of growing
by leaps and bounds, the data is now past 67,000 items (about 200 a
    day).

    April-17-1992 Version 9.06

Adds or corrects over 2,500 items. Major import came from Mike
Ratledge's disaster data and Jerry Lee's black history data. The
space program has been update to reflect all US manned missions
including birth dates of the new 1992 crop of astronauts. The data
has gone beyond 50,000. There is DAY906-U.ZIP, which contains
everything (except word processor) to up date, from 9.05 with just
    some editing from yourself.

    March-20-1992 Version 9.05

Adds or corrects over 11,000 items. I still have Braunwart's data to
go through. Major additions came from "Complete Directory to Prime
Time TV Stars." There are nearly 50,000 items in the database.

    March-30-1991 Version 9.04

A tragic thing happened on my way to version 9.04. In December of
1989, I started adding several thousands (tens of thousands) of
changes and additions. Many thanks to my collaborator Robert
Braunwart. I then purchased a spiffy new 386 machine with a spacious
85 meg hard SCSI Segate drive. Around April or so, I had completed
editing and compiling all of version 9.04, save December. I was more
than 3/4 done with December, and then it happened. DOS said "NO SCSI
DRIVE FOUND." After making attempt after attempt to revive the (of
course not backed up data) drive, all hope was lose. I did get a
replacement drive, but it took the heart out of doing the compilation.
Any way I got my dander back and viola, added some 9,000 new entries
(or corrections) and version 9.04 is ready. In an effort to get this
out sometime, I have not gone through much of Robert Braunwarts
additional data. (Just Jan & Feb). I am sure since then he has added
even more data. I will get to it, I promise!

    Nov-6-1989 Version 9.03

Adds or corrects over 7,500 items. Including almost every Pro Hockey
Stanley Cup final game, Pro Football and NBA championship contests.
Many astronaut birthdays have been added too. Most of the 7,500 items
are additional information to previously existing items.

    May-25-1989 Version 9.02

Containing over 1,100 changes. The data set now includes almost all
major league baseball no-hitters since 1900 and the final games of
    every baseball World Series.

    Feb-9-1989 Version 9.00

DAY 9.00 was released on Feb. 19, 1989, and in less than 45 days,
    version 9.01 & 9.01a were released. With almost 2500 changes (1900
additions, 200 deletions and 400 changes).

A BIT OF HISTORY OF TODAY/NEWDAYPC

In July, 1986, Patrick Kincaid released for public usage a program
called Today. It's based on a mainframe program designed by Mike
Butler. Along with the master program he had data files for each
month. Each monthly data file was approximately 15K in length. After
a few months I had added a lot of new data and released my update of
the Today monthly files. Eventually, Robert Braunwart, put out his
updates and approached me on a calibration of our work. Despite,
abbreviations and other attempts at shortening the data, the 12
monthly files of over 30,000 items has swelled to almost 2 megs.

Mike Ratledge, like myself and many others have gotten much enjoyment
out of this program, but found some short comings. TODAY would not
read a file over 50K and would only display about the first 50 finds
for a date. He also wanted it to run on a BBS (T-Comm). So he
rewrote the program in turbo-pascal (TODAY.EXE was written in C).

As of this writing, Ratledge's latest version 4.5 decidedly beats
Kincaid's latest version 2.3 for features. (now 3.6). Ratledge did
update a beta version in 1989. Unfortunately both of his computers
were hit by a hurricane and destroyed his source code. He lost interest
and seemingly will not be releasing an updated version

I believe NEWDAY duplicates every feature of TODAY, but also allows
for randomness, more categories, more color, remark statements, date
    scanning and date aging.

In the data files you will find "(BG)," on some occasions. Although
coincidentally those are my initials, they are actual those of William
Baring-Gould. Les Moskowitz who compiled Sherlock Holmes' dates used
(BG) to indicate that those dates were proposed by Baring-Gould.
Baring-Gould is a Sherlock Holmes' authority and his dates are
reckoned as opposed to being in the actual text.

John is quite prolific in adding data to be imported into my files.
The only problem is that it is in Dutch. He is very kind to help
translate (even sent me a good Dutch-English dictionary). I was also
able to get a shareware version of BABYLON which is a language
translator. It was written by a Dutch guy so the translation table
was already loaded with 15,000 words (I upped it to about 25,000).

HOW DO YOU KNOW THE DATA IS RIGHT?

As to data correction, it is sometimes difficult to verify a specific
date when two equally good sources have different information. One
problem arises in the change of calendars from Julian to Gregorian and
the International dateline does present a problem. Midnight presents
a problem it may be a different day in California than Amsterdam.
(Fortunately in the future we should have no problem - Star date 8801,
captain). Tried to use the date at the location where the event
occurred, if not sure used the Eastern time zone of the US (NYC) I
read in one particularly enjoyable source (don't recall the title)
that contained celebrities birthdays, that whenever a doubt arose they
took the earliest date. It is rare that a person would make
    themselves older.

. . . and when in doubt blame it on typos.

AND NOW A WORD FROM OUR SPONSOR

This is Noncents-ware. You can modify, spindle, fold, erase or do
just about anything you want to these files, but if you give them to
anyone, document your changes. If you have any changes, additions,
deletions, suggestions or whatever I would like to hear about them. I
can be reached at the above address and many of the major PC BBS in
    212, and 718 area code.

I plan to continue updating, I will include deletions, additions and
    changes.

The updates will use the following filespec "DAY910.ZIP" for version
9.10, "DAY911.ZIP" for version 9.11. This should allow us to continue
with version 9 for many years!
