   `--------------------- Bulletin Board System ---------------------'

Hello and welcome to PC-Express(c) Magazine. PCE-Magazine is made for
people running with the bulletin board system called PC-Express(c) and
for people that want to start a PC-Express(c) based BBS or are other-
wise interested in PC-Express(c). PC-Express(c) magazine is free for
everyone and spreading is encouraged. If you want to have a printed
copy of the current issue (or from prior issues) call our BBS and post
a message to us so we can work something out.

PC-Express(c) Magazine can be found on all the PC-Express(c) support
site worldwide and on the FTP- and WWW-sites (see above). Besides that
this magazine is posted in alt.binaries.bbs, alt.zines, alt.ezines,
  alt.binaries.zines and rec.mag.

We try to make this magazine interesting for almost everyone that is
somehow associated with PC-Express(c). Besides the magazine itself,
the archive holds much more like a list of PC-Express(c) BBS's world-
wide, sources, ANSI/ASCII, a vote sheet, internet -, FTP - and WWW in-
formation etc. In the magazine itself we will try to hold on to the
  following contents:

 iii. Editorial section //
 - ---------------------//- -

Hi, welcome to the 23rd issue. This month we have worked quite a bit on
the new PC-Express and it won't take long before we release v1.40. For
those who still use a demo version, there's a new registration agree-
ment since january 1997 (in case you didn't know it), with which you
can register your copy of PC-Express (life-time) for only 25 (US) dol-
lars. Anyway, the new version will have some very nice improvements, I
will talk to you about that later. While Michael is busy coding the PC-
Express BBS itself, we are doing all that must be done besides coding
that program, which means that almost everything that you will receive
will be new like, for instance, a new installation program. Due to the
fact that many new items are inserted and new programs are created, the
distribution archive becomes rather big. If you want an example, the
TheTag archive alone is now approximately 1,1 Mb. You may ask yourself,
why? Well, for example, there's a Full Screen Message Editor with many
(and I do mean many) options. If you want to make a nice working editor
that is capable of performing all the wishes of the users of your PC-
Express BBS, than, even if your code is great, the program will take
quite a few bytes of your harddisk. This Full Screen Message Editor,
which is finished at this time, can be used for the "c" -, "e" - and
(r)eply commands in PC-Express and is also implemented into TheTag.
This means that your users will experience a very easy way of writing
messages on your BBS and for the SysOp it enables, for example, the
fact that the directory listings can be edited in any way the SysOp
wants to. Comments can now be as long as the SysOp wants, the File_Id.
Diz can be edited to the max, all while staying inside your BBS. This
also works, of course, for the remote SysOp's. Let's have a look at
what you can perform with the new Full Screen Message Editor:

** All the keys that can be used with the Full Screen Message Editor **

Is that enough? Don't worry, this is only the first version, more will
be available in the new version of this editor. Another item that is
very interesting is the fact that PC-Express can now handle unlimited
message areas and a big number of file areas (32000) in each of the 200
conferences that are available. Because of that (the message base) and
also because of other aspects, perhaps of even greater importance, we
have created a QWK door that can be used for offline mail reading. The
QWK door is working 100% and we have tested it with approximately ten
 offline mail readers.

The group NAPS has been added to the programming section because of the
fact that they release PC-Express tools for several months now.

Two SysOp's have registered PC-Express v1.30 and one SysOp has registe-
 red TheTag v1.20.

: The mail packing (with the "del" key from the waiting screen) does :
: not work properly in the test version of PC-Express(c) v1.40; when :
: performing this function, the program only displays the names of :
: the conferences, nothing more, and afterwards the computer has to :
: be reset. When you start the BBS again, it appears that nothing :
  : happened :
  : :
  : (The Doctor) :

: After that the question "delete original message" appeared, PC- :
: Express(c) shows three empty line before the question "do you wish :
: to send a CC? appears; please remove the extra empty lines :
  : :

: The screen routines in the beta version of PC-Express(c) v1.40 are :
: not 100%; the system frequently pauses when a ANSI/ASCII is dis- :
: played on the screen, only some parts of the screen routines were :
: fixed in the latest test version :
  : :
  : (The Doctor) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: Enlarge the "subject" field at the "ml" command; when doing this :
: you can make the "username" field a bit smaller. Now the "subject" :
: field is three characters too short. :
  : :
  : (The Doctor) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: At the "ml" command, when you have read the first message, PC-Ex- :
: press(c) asks again for a message. At this point, add "? to list" :
: or "? list again" because no one remembers the message list com- :
: pletely or the number of a certain message. Add an extra line at :
: the language files to do this. :
  : :
  : (The Doctor) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: At the "qwk" command, when a person wants to leave, let him or her :
: simply press <enter> or <esc> to return to the BBS prompt. Now a :
: user _must_ choose an option. Furthermore, when a QWK-setting is :
: changed using option number three of the QWK command and the user :
: presses <enter>, he or she moves to the BBS prompt. This is wrong, :
: the user must return to the QWK main menu. :
  : :

  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: When a user carbon copies a message written to another user to the :
: SysOp, the message record of the SysOp is not updated and the wai- :
: ting screen shows no unread messages to the SysOp. :
  : :

  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: Imagine that PC-Express(c) states that the SysOp has two messages; :
: the SysOp logs on to the BBS but at that moment doesn't want to :
: read the messages and presses "n" at the question whether or not :
: the SysOp wants to read the messages. When the wait-for-caller :
: screen, after that the SysOp has logged off, comes back up, it :
: states that the SysOp has 0 messages waiting to be read, but that :
: isn't true. In fact, there are still two messages. :
  : :
  : (The Doctor) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: PC/X doesn't keep track of the total number of messages a person :
: has received; the counter remains the same... :
  : :

: The SysOp (or any other person that has a sec. lvl high enough can :
: redirect the contents of a message to a textfile. When doing so, :
: the SysOp isn't able to reply to that message, because pc/x auto- :
: matically moves on to the next message (or with the LogOnAll.bat). :
: Please adjust this option so that, when the SysOp makes a textfile :
: from a message, he/she still is able to reply to it without the :
: need of waiting for the logon to be completed and searching for :
  : the message. :

: The Config.exe program from the release version has a bug. When :
: the SysOp entered the Config.exe the key from the registered SysOp :
: was deleted. Amon ra first noticed this and I (the doctor) was the :
: 2nd person who had the honour having it... :
  : :

  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: There is a time-counting bug in the latest test version; after a :
: transfer with "internal" z-modem, PC-Express(c) displays the file :
: "KeyError.ans"(.asc) and the user is thrown out of the BBS :
  : :

: Add automatic screen length detection at the logon (like ANSI/ :
: ASCII). PC/X is the only program around which displays a list with :
: lines. For hardliners you should make a switch in the config of :
  : pc/x. :

: that if i quote only 1 sentence of the original message (e.g. :

vi. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) //
 - -------------------------------------//- -

Q: Are there any www-sites & ftp-sites where we can download tools?

A: Since april 1996 there's an ftp-site where you can download many of
the PC-Express(c) tools that are released. The ftp address is:

     ftp://ftp.mindweb.com/pce

PC-Express(c) also has a WWW site, the address is:

     hem.passagen.se/evolve/pce/index.htm

From the second half of december 1996, another homepage will be a-
vailable; logon to "http://194.134.7.20/~kvtilb/" or "http://home.
     concepts.nl/~kvtilb/".

Q: What's the difference between the demo - and the registered version
     of PC-Express(c)?

A: The demo version of PC-Express(c) has a few items which can be used
to a minumum: A maximum of 1 node and a maximum of 2 doors. Further
all options can be fully used.

Q: A problems seems to occur when someone calls; pc/x displays "Ring
Detected", but the modem doesn't answer the call and a few seconds
later, pc/x displays the text "Waiting for a call" again. What
     could be the problem?

A: In general, there are a few things which you can adjust so that the
modems answers the call like it should and the user moves into the
BBS. First, when you have an high speed modem (i.e. 28k8), look at
the answerstring. Some modem types need "a |" after the answer com-
mand (i.e. "ATA"), but (i.e. with "Trust" modems) the pipe must be
removed in order to let the BBS answer the RING. Second, look at
the delay, with high speed modems you set it to "120" or "150". If
these two items are installed correctly, in most cases pc/x will
     answer the call.

                                           .

   What's new in PC-Express(c) v1.40 3 //
 - ------------------------------------//- -

 .---.---------------------------------------------------------------------.
: ! : Fixed a time bug that occured after transfers and when a door was :
 : : used :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : From now on there's only 1 language file available for each langua- :
: : ge in the text directory of your BBS (e.g. c:\BBS\Node0) :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: ! : Fixed a bug in the pcb code @X07; this code was sometimes displayed :
 : : as white :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: ! : A bug that occurred in the carbon copy routine when mailing the :
: : System Operator has been fixed. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: ! : We have fixed the "???"-bug at the "ANSI detect" routine. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : A new command called "ld" (local download) has been installed. More :
: : information will be provided in the documentation. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : ! : The "MessageReceived"-counter didn't work. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: ! : When using the "message to text" option, PC-Express(c) now displays :
: : the next message directly afterwards. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : + : The "n"-command has a new parameter called "!". When you, for in- :
 : : stance, enter the command "n !20 u", PC-Express(c) displays the :
: : last 20 uploaded files in the upload directory. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: ! : When the "fr"-command was at the end of displaying a file listing, :
: : the user could not flag files. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: ! : The "ns" option didn't work during the zippy search. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : The text "Yelling for SysOp..." in transferred from the "Express. :
: : txt" file to the language files (line 399). On positions 1 and 9 :
: : in the "Express.txt" file are now the sentence "Ansi [Y/n]". Fur- :
: : thermore PC-Express(c) checks if a frontend door has changed the :
 : : ANSI status. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: ! : Problems occured in combination with the "z" and "fr" commands when :
: : files bigger than 10 Mb were shown on the screen. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : PC-Express(c) support the use of 32000 file areas in each conferen- :
: : ce. The first nine file areas will be saved like before, but the :
: : other file areas (paths) will be saved in a new file which can be :
: : found in each conference and is called "FileList.inx". The struc- :
: : ture of this file can be found in the new structures file. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : PC-Express(c) now supports the use of unlimited message areas in :
: : each conference. If you want to join one or more networks, you'll :
: : need more then 200 message areas. From now on you can define un- :
: : limited message bases and groups in each conference. With the "sa" :
: : command (Select Area) the user can select the message area in which :
: : he or she wants to read and write. When the user starts the "sa"- :
: : command, PC-Express(c) shows the current group and all the sub- :
: : groups and mail areas. The menu will be created by PC-Express(c) :
: : itself, but it's possible to create these menus yourself. Before :
: : PC-Express(c) displays its own menu, the BBS looks for a file cal- :
 : : led <messagebase-path>+<groupname>+.ans/.asc. The groupname from :
: : the main group is called "netmain". When the user uses the "ms" :
: : command (MailScan), he or she automatically scans all these mes- :
: : sage areas (if selected) for private mail. The /X-like mailscan :
: : is able to scan through all these netmail areas, but the original :
 : : pc/x mail scan isn't able to do that. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: ! : We have fixed a bug in the Show Answerfile routine. There was a :
: : problem when the user changed his or her name into high and low :
 : : characters. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : + : PC-Express(c) can be started with the parameter "-t". This parame- :
: : ter will tell PC-Express(c) how much time the user may stay on the :
: : system, no matter what his or her time limits are. This feature :
 : : is needed for mailers. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : After an upload was made, PC-Express(c) asks the user whether or :
: : not he or she wants to logoff directly. This is done before the :
: : check - and post routines. The user has 10 seconds to choose. When :
: : the user choose "goodbye" before uploading, PC-Express(c) will :
: : terminate the call after 9 seconds, else the user will return to :
 : : the BBS. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : When a user doesn't know his or her password, after a number of ti- :
: : mes he or she looses the carrier. Now it is possible to contact the :
 : : SysOp before this happens. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : ! : PC-Express(c) had a bug at the Display ANSI file routine. Due to a :
: : number of reasons, for instance when a line held more than 255 :
: : characters, ANSI were not correctly displayed. Now PC-Express(c) :
: : reads these ANSI files byte for byte; this only slows down the :
: : procedure a little bit but it works quite well. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : PC-Express(c) now supports the QWK package format. With the "qwk" :
: : or "zoom" commands the BBS can send and receive qwk packets. When :
: : you start the qwk feature, PC-Express(c) will display the file :
: : QWKMenu.ans(~.asc), which must be located in your text directory :
 :   : (e.g. C:\BBS\Node0). If you don't have such a file, PC-Express(c)   :
: : displays it's internal menu. When a user wants to create a mail :
 : : packet, PC-Express(c) starts the batchfile "QWK-Pack.bat" (at the :
: : moment we only support the pkzip archive format). The name of the :
: : QWK packet that's created can be defined in the Config.exe. When :
: : PC-Express(c) receives a reply packet, it will execute the batch- :
: : file "QWK-Unp.bat" in order to unpack the package. All this work :
: : will be done inside the directory <nodepath>+/QWK, for example :
: : C:\BBS\Node0\QWK. With different commands like "cf" and "zoom" the :
: : user defines the conferences which will be used with the QWK. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : ! : Fixed a bug that occured when a textfile was used for a message; :
: : the black lines were removed. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: ! : We have fixed a bug in the Ratio Check routine; there was a bug in :
 : : the Time Check routine. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: ! : We have fixed a bug in the NewUser logon routine when PC-Express(c) :
 : : asks for choosing a language. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : + : PC-Express(c) v1.4 now uses besides the Users.dat a second user :
: : databank called Users2.dat. For now, this is done due to a new fea- :
: : ture: The SysOp is able to define for each user a ratio for each :
: : conference to which the user has access. When the SysOp enters the :
: : user editor to edit a specific user, he or she can set a global :
: : ratio, but also can define a separate ratio (files and bytes) for :
: : each conference. All the data (how many files and bytes are trans- :
: : ferred) are kept inside the data file Users2.dat. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: ! : Something was wrong during the logon procedure; some users got two :
: : times the same ASCII instead of two different ones. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: ! : Fixed a bug that occured with the Event start routine. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : We have added a new command called "cf" (set conference configura- :
: : tion). With this command the user is able to define which conferen- :
: : ces should be checked during a file- or mailscan. In this way the :
: : user can check only the conferences of his/her interest. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : There is a new command called "MailList" (the "ml" command). When :
: : using this command, a list of all the messages in the specific con- :
: : ference where the user is located, is presented. Only the messages :
: : to which the user has access to are stated. The name of the person :
: : who wrote the message and the subject are written down. From this :
: : list the user can choose which message he or she wants to read. :
: : The user is able to state the numbers of many messages, which must :
: : be separated by <space>, and then press <enter> to begin. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : + : When uploading a file, PC-Express(c) asks in which conference this :
: : uploaded file should be posted. We have added an option so that a :
: : list (the "l"-option) with conference names and numbers pops up to :
: : which the uploader has access. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: ! : An error occured with the "ds"-command when stating file- and path- :
: : names that did not exist; this if fixed now. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : We have added another option to the Local Upload feature, more spe- :
: : cific the use of the "all" option. Imagine that you want to upload :
: : all the files that are located in the directory C:\Temp. At the lo- :
: : cal upload procedure you can enter: C:\Temp\*.*. If you then use :
 : : the "all" option, PC-Express(c) doesn't ask any question anymore, :
: : but simply uploads all the files inside this directory. In this way :
: : you can upload many files without the need of you staying at your :
 : : computer. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : + : A new feature is the Global Bulletin option. PC-Express(c) supports :
: : the use of one bulletin directory for the whole BBS, which can be, :
: : for example, C:\BBS\Bulletin. For each conference that is installed :
: : in your BBS, the SysOp has the choice whether to use this global :
: : bulletin directory or the conference-specific bulletin directory, :
: : which will be C:\BBS\<confpath>\BULLETIN. The option could be very :
: : usefull when you have many conferences in which the same bulletins :
 : : are located. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : ! : Fixed a bug that occured in the "fr"-command when the dirX.txt did :
 : : not exist. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: ! : The variable LCWantedChat was not set right in the dropfile. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : There was a problem with the "z"-command when using wildcards; now :
: : PC-Express(c) handles it internally, so it doesn't matter if you :
 : : use wildcards or not. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : If someone uses the "change protocol" command, PC-Express(c) looks :
: : for a file called Protocol.ans(~.asc), which must be located in the :
 : : text directory (e.g. C:\BBS\Node0). Second, if you or a user wants :
: : to change the language, PC-Express(c) looks for a file called :
: : Language.ans(~.asc), which also must be located in the text direc- :
 : : tory of your BBS. :

   WANTED / IDEAS

We have got several questions from various people concerning a good
chat program (like i.e. pcechat), but now adapted to the messagebase
from pc/x v1.3. At the moment we are very busy and we will try to cre-
ate such a tool, but many other things also have to be done, so we apo-
logize that some tools are not there when you need them. I hope that o-
ther people can also try to code tools that people request for.

 (from: Megaman@dog.to.org (Megaman))

1: Could someone code a BACKGROUND FILE CHECKER for pc/X 1.3+? So that
while people are still uploading, the files that are already finish-
ed are checked and posted into the upload dir, even though the per-
son's whole batch isn't finshed yet. This is just like the build-in
function in the AMIGA bbs System 'TEMPEST'. Making this would make
PCEXPRESS very unique, the only IBM based bbs system with such func-
    tion.

2: And another thing, can someone code a DIRx.TXT editor? Something
like PFED? Right now i'm using the regular DOS EDIT to edit the DIR-
    x.TXT.

 (from: DOC HOLiDAY)

 1. Can someone code a tool for the eventx.bat which checks all file
directories and repacks all files into a special form, like ARJ
into ZIP, add or delete bbs advertisement.....

 (from: dE=tORCH)

 1. I need a wall with nice fading effects, adjustable ansis, and
    a top-ten-writers on the same screen (upper-left-corner e.g.)

 2. I'd like to have a diz-stamper which adds 2-3 lines under each
    fil_id.diz:
    Diz-Date: xx.xx.xx Newest .Nfo: xx.xx.xx
    Files : xx.xx.xx Newest File: xx.xx.xx
.. ok - it should work together with muhadib's STRIPHEAD -
so only on the first disk of a many-disks-upload should be
    edited...
