PC/X-Magazine is free for everyone and spreading is encouraged. If you
want to have a printed copy of the current issue (or from prior
issues), call our BBS and post a message to us so we can work some-
  thing out.

We will try to make this a very interesting zine with all kinds of in-
formation that's usefull for (almost) anyone running PC-Express(c).
Besides this textfile we incorporate much more in the archives that we
make such as a list of all the BBS's in the world that are using PC-
Express(c) (registered and unregistered), a source file for an utility
that someone has coded (and one that works :-)), some ANSI- & ASCII-
  texts, a vote sheet etc.

In the magazine itself we'll try to hold on to the following contents:

     i---General information
ii---What's in the archive that you've got (downloaded)
   iii---Editorial section
    iv---Other information
     v---New things, bugs and idea's
    vi---FAQ's
   vii---BBS reviewed
  viii---Source section
    ix---Tool reports
     x---Releases & requests
           released tools
           wanted/ideas
    xi---Registrations & changes
xii---How to register your copy of PC-Express(c)
  xiii---Distributors of this zine
   xiv---End notes

We'll do much be we can't do it alone; if you have a source-file that
you want to share with others so that they too can learn to code, if
you have a textfile with important information, if you have an addi-
tion to the list with (un-)registered BBS's in your country etc.
please give it to one the people that is able to incorporate it in the
next issue of the magazine. We all must try to make this zine interes-
  ting for us all.

When you want to contact the author with submissions, your vote, com-
plaints, idea's etc. write a message to one of the above mentioned In-
ternet addresses, call our BBS or mail us at the following address:

. . : Hello again, nice to see that you're actually rea-
: _:__ | ding these issues ;) Just joking, I know that many
      | . / /\ people consider this zine an important element in
- --- | :/ / / -- the scene today (ahum..). The month began somewhat
      | /___/ / | unexpected for me, because my harddrive several ti-
:__\___\/ .| mes reported a serious error while writing to drive
     /\ __ \.| c and I don't know what the problem is. I let norton
     \ \ \ \ disc doctor perform a general - as well as surface
:\ \___\___\ test and my harddrive is 100% optimized; I think
. \/___/___/ that my computer has enough memory for DOS-operati-
      | / _____/\ ons (3 MB XMS, with Emm386 also to be used as EMS),
/ __/\_\/ but when, for instance, I want to copy a large num-
/___/\_\/: ber of files from one place on my HD to another, my
\___\/__..| computer really slows down and sometimes it "cra-
/\ __ \ | shes" (this also happens when optimizing). Now, eve-
\ \ \ \ ry morning my computer crashes during the external
 - -- \ \_______\ event that pc/x performs, more specific while crea-
\/_______/p! ting an allfiles listing. My harddrive is 1,2 gb,
      | . : devided into drive c: and d: which are both 600 mb.
: . . | The c: drive is 85% full. If someone knows what the
. : problem is, call my BBS (if it isn't crashed ;). In
return, I'm willing to give you a nice piece of cho-
 colate.

Enough of this, let's go on with more interesting things for you. As
you already know by now, TheTag v1.25 d/r and PCEKiT v2.70 will be re-
leased soon. These programs are really good now and that is why we do
not release them outside the distribution package of PC-Express(c) any-
more, except for this one last time. We think that with the last ver-
sion, you can run your BBS in a perfect way until the next version of
PC-Express(c) is released. The last items that we are inserting or have
inserted into this new version is a full screen message editor, which
will also be released as a stand alone tool for PC-Express(c); I belief
that many people asked for this. Plans are being made to provide a user
that registers with a hard copy of the documentation in the preferred
language and a disk with TheTag, together in an envelope and mailed to
his/her address. A number of extra things will be made available. Fur-
ther more there was a memory leak when a dirX.txt file was not present
at the BBS; this is also fixed now. Another bug was reported when per-
forming an "n s g", at a certain file area (function of the amount of
memory?) TheTag crashed, this has also been fixed.

In PC-Express(c) v1.4 we are going to expand the help that the users on
your system could require. When you have installed your copy of PC-Ex-
press(c), you will find a new directory called "HELP", in which several
files and a sub-directory called "TXT" are located. The idea is that
each command in PC-Express(c) is explained (with examples) in a sepera-
te text file, which the SysOp can adjust or alter 100%. Furhter more,
the "help door" is expanded and has become a search engine, users can
enter a word of which they want an explanation and the program shows a
text file concerning the string entered. For doing so, we have made two
configuration files, which also can be adjusted or altered 100%. Doing
so, PC-Express(c) has an excellent help routine for the users of your
 system.

The first archive of PC-Express(c) called "pce00000.001" is going to be
changed quite a bit. I heard from the author that the SysOp of the Aus-
trian support site is going to make new ANSI's for PC-Express(c), so
that (new) SysOp's can benefit the beautifull new ANSI's and (maybe)
don't have to make ANSI's themselves. Furthermore, the textfiles loca-
ted in the root directory and the batchfiles are altered and also the
directories created by PC-Express(c) when installing for the first time
are changed. When the new SysOp installs PC-Express(c) v1.4, he or she
will get a more complete and self explaining system than before.

Then a few words about the network which is going to be started when
v1.4 is released. I am building a huge collection of software with pro-
grams and documentation, tips, sources etc. which can be used for main-
taining your messagebase. All the files that are transported via PC-Ex-
pressNet(c) will also be available at our BBS and besides that an e-
nourmous amount of other files. When you are looking for software that
you want to use for maintaining your messagebase, come take a look at
the PC-ExpressNet(c) conference, we have more then you think! This con-
ference will be available to all users when the new version of PC-Ex-
 press(c) is released.

I think that most people know or at least have heard of the QWK message
format. There are quite a few bulletin board systems around that alrea-
dy have implemented this format into their system (some have done that
from the beginning). Well, I can now say that pc/x v1.4 also supports
the QWK format. That means that you can let pc/x pack your mail (unread
mail, already read mail or both?) and download it, so that you can take
your time while viewing it offline (saves quite a lot of money if you
are into writing/answering messages) and upload all your replies in one
time to the BBS at another time.

HOUlQ, SysOp of the Luxembourgisch support site, uploaded a file in
which there was written that the group called "SOS" was dead. HOUlQ im-
mediatly uploaded a second file, which was an application generator for
applying to a new group, consisting so far out of a number of members
from the former group. This new group is called "Till Dawn" and they'll
make pc/x tools. Later on in this zine you'll find more information a-
 bout this new group.

I received a message from DOC HOLiDAY in which he said the had to goto
another town for his study and that was why he stopped (partly) with
PC-Express(c). He said that he would be watching pc/x evolve etc., but
that he isn't active anymore concering the bulletin board system.

In the first two weeks of september I had my re-examinations, a total
of four. On september 19, I heard that I passed everything (even a de-
coration), so now I am in my fifth year of my medicine study and the
combination of my study and computers seems to work okay (indeed it
does!). For those of you who are interested in the results of my ef-
forts, here they are: Epidemiology: 10, farmacology(I+II): 12.5, gynae-
cology: 14, immunology (inlcuding pathologic immunology): 16, Infecti-
ous diseases: 12, microbiology: 18, pathologic anatomy: 16, semiology
(general): 16, social medicine and family doctor theory: 14.5, patholo-
gic anatomy pract.: 19, radiology (normal and pathologic): 13, semiolo-
 gy (surgery): 15, surgery (theory+pract.): 15, traumatology: 12.5. In
order to receive a decoration, you must have a mean result between 14.0
 and 16.0. I have just above 14...

This month I have corresponded with morgoth, SysOp of a PC-Express(c)
Bulletin Board System in Belgium. We have come to an agreement about
the fact that he's going to be the official PC-Express(c) support site
for Belgium as of november 1, 1996. In that way, also Belgium has an
support site. It is important that (almost) every country inside europe
has its own support site. People that live in a country which has no
support site and feel like becomming one can call the WHQ or any other
head quarters and leave a message to the SysOp. For now, a big hello to
 Morgoth, Lord of Darkness...

This month we have done some work on the internet. My internet address
is fairly stable (I even took a student year subscription) so that will
mean that as of now I can be reached at "kvtilb@concepts.nl". The sub-
scription also included the use of a homepage, but my internet provider
told me that I could make a home page as of next month. I will give you
the address of my home page in the next issue because now I don't know
it either. If you want to go on the WWW, logon at the home page of the
swedisch support site (jonte), which can be reached at "hem.passagen.se
/evolve/pce/index.htm". It is the idea that this magazine will be pos-
ted on several ftp servers like etext.archive.umich.edu, for which I'll
be reponsible. Besides that it can be a good idea to create an usenet
 newsgroup about PC-Express(c), something like "alt.bbs.pc-express". I
can use some help on this subject, if anyone has some experience on how
to create an usenet newsgroup like above, please call me and/or write
to me; I would appreciate it enormously. Also for other ideas like, for
instance, important ftp servers where we can post pc/x magazine, please
 leave us a message.

Take a look at the "WANTED/IDEAS" part at the end of this magazine; it
contains valuable information about new tool s that can be made or up-
dates of tools with interesting new options. If you also have an idea
for a new tool, give it to us and we'll put it at this section in the
 magazine.

 At the moment  morgoth is  translating  the language files into french;
this will mean that with pc/x v1.4 we can serve you in 4 languages:
English, Dutch, German and French. We all hope that morgoth will also
convert the documentation of TheTag and PC-Express(c) :-)

Last but not least, I have spoken to MugSHot on the phone just before
this magazine was about to be thrown into the scene and he said to me
that he had worked on a full screen editor for pc/x and that it was fi-
nished for the biggest part. As said before, it will be implemented in
TheTag but we will also release it for the "e"- and "c"-command in PC-
Express(c). We have five A4 pages with functions for you (!), but more
information will be provided next time...

   v. New things, bugs and idea's //
 - ------------------------------//- -

// Short explanation: New things, bugs and ideas are written at ran-
dom; the name of the person who discovered it is written between
  hooks //

  .--------------------------------------------------------------------.
: Imagine that PC-Express(c) states that the SysOp has two messages; :
: the SysOp logs on to the BBS but at that moment doesn't want to :
: read the messages and presses "n" at the question whether or not :
: the SysOp wants to read the messages. When the wait-for-caller :
: screen, after that the SysOp has logged off, comes back up, it :
: states that the SysOp has 0 messages waiting to be read, but that :
: isn't true. In fact, there are still two messages. :
  : :
  : (The Doctor) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: PC/X doesn't keep track of the total number of messages a person :
: has received; the counter remains the same... :
  : :
  : (GOD HiMSELF!) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: The SysOp (or any other person that has a sec. lvl high enough can :
: redirect the contents of a message to a textfile. When doing so, :
: the SysOp isn't able to reply to that message, because pc/x auto- :
: matically moves on to the next message (or with the LogOnAll.bat). :
: Please adjust this option so that, when the SysOp makes a textfile :
: from a message, he/she still is able to reply to it without the :
: need of waiting for the logon to be completed and searching for :
  : the message. :
  : :
  : (SUNNY) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: The Config.exe program from the release version has a bug. When :
: the SysOp entered the Config.exe the key from the registered SysOp :
: was deleted. Amon ra first noticed this and I (the doctor) was the :
: 2nd person who had the honour having it... :
  : :
  : (The Doctor) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: PC/X has a known bug. When you use the combination of UART & Z-mo- :
: dem, the system kicks the user of the BBS after some time. This :
: will be fixed in the next version. For now, use the batchfiles :
  : from other Z-modem protocols like PD-Zmodem or GSZ-modem and eve- :
: rything will work fine again. :
  : :
  : (The Doctor) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: Add automatic screen lenght detection at the logon (like ANSI/ :
: ASCII). PC/X is the only program around which displays a list with :
: lines. For hardliners you should make a switch in the config of :
  : pc/x. :
  : :
  : (DOC HOliDAY) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
  : Add LANGUAGE.A?? AND PROTOCOL.A??. Looks 100% better than the :
  : hardcoded list from pc/x. :
  : :
  : (DOC HOliDAY) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: it seems that pce has a bug in its jambase.. :( i also saw it at :
: at my bbs, i had there the problem that i quoted a message and as :
: i wanted to quote the next one, pce saved the last sentence of the :
: message quoted before in that message.. an i also have the problem :
: that if i quote only 1 sentence of the original message (e.g. :
: 2;2), pce don't save this sentance, but he writes the quoted :
: messaged but without this one sentence (at two sentances it works) :
  : :

vi. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) //
 - -------------------------------------//- -

Q: Are there any www-sites & ftp-sites where we can download tools?

A: Since april 1996 there's an ftp-site where you can download many of
the PC-Express(c) tools that are released. The ftp address is:

     ftp:mindweb.com/pce

PC-Express(c) also has a WWW site, the address is:

     hem.passagen.se/evolve/pce/index.htm

Note: Soon another WWW site will be active, but that will take a
     while.

Q: What's the difference between the demo - and the registered version
     of PC-Express(c)?

A: The demo version of PC-Express(c) has a few items which can be used
to a minumum: A maximum of 1 node and a maximum of 2 doors. Further
all options can be fully used.

Q: A problems seems to occur when someone calls; pc/x displays "Ring
Detected", but the modem doesn't answer the call and a few seconds
later, pc/x displays the text "Waiting for a call" again. What
     could be the problem?

A: In general, there are a few things which you can adjust so that the
modems answers the call like it should and the user moves into the
BBS. First, when you have an high speed modem (i.e. 28k8), look at
the answerstring. Some modem types need "a |" after the answer com-
mand (i.e. "ATA"), but (i.e. with "Trust" modems) the pipe must be
removed in order to let the BBS answer the RING. Second, look at
the delay, with high speed modems you set it to "120" or "150". If
these two items are installed corerectly, in most cases pc/x will
     answer the call.

Short desc. : SysOp pager (v1.0)
  PCEKiT v. : 2.67

  ---( Begin )----------------------------------------------------------

DOC HOLiDAY uploaded a tool at my BBS from a person which I don't seem
to know: rEtRo....A new star is born! ;) This person made a tool which
serves as a pager for the SysOp when a user wants to chat. In the
past, a guy called THE HOODLUM, has also made a pager which looks very
much like this one (made it's the same person ;), but this time a num-
ber of improvements have been made; it's certainly worth the trouble
of installing it into your system.

You can execute the door from your system or from the DOS-prompt; in
both cases a screen pops up and a page-reason can be entered. After
that, the number of lines are displayed, which are stated down in the
configuration file (pager.cfg) and they can be adjusted to your wi-
shes. Then there are music files (pager.snd, ro-intro.amd, ro-jmprn.
amd & ro-rebel.amd), so paging the sysop is going to be a bit nicer
these days. There are some standard lines which the program uses and
can't be changed, but that doesn't matter.

The program is accompanied with a sufficient documentation, no trouble
with installing it (just make a batchfile which includes "ro-pager.exe
-n%1" and everything will work). There is no negative critisicm on the
program, but then again it's not a big tool.

   Conclusion: Nice one, make more...

  PCEKiT v. : 2.67

  ---( Begin )----------------------------------------------------------
At the beginning on this archive you might have read that DOC HOLiDAY
wrote a message in which he said that we would be less active, but now
I'm reviewing a tool that he made this month. How nice some things can
go, for a moment I thought that you had given up coding. Well, let us
take a look at what he made for us, a last eight callers displayer for
pc/x v1.3 and higher which serves as a real-time program for the logon
procedure on your BBS. DOC himself calls it one of his NTC-TILII pro-
ductions (Nothing To Configure, Take It Like It Is ;), so hopefully we
will see more of these tools in the future.

The ANSI/ASCII picture that the program uses is made external in order
to let the SysOp adjust a part of the file to his or her wishes. Besi-
des that the program does all the work and doesn't need anything. You
can place this tool in your LogOnAll.bat like this: txc_l8c1.exe -n%1.
The program is accompanied with a small info file that actually says
it all and a doc file with information about the group. Make sure that
your lastcall.dat has a minimum of 10 entries and that you environment
variable of pc/x is set in your autoexec.bat.

DOC HOLiDAY has build in some "special effects", so I think that it'll
be a good choice if you decide to give this version a try on your BBS.

Conclusion: a variant to the same theme.

   WANTED / IDEAS

We have got several questions from various people concerning a good
chat program (like i.e. pcechat), but now adapted to the messagebase
from pc/x v1.3. At the moment we are very busy and we will try to cre-
ate such a tool, but many other things also have to be done, so we apo-
logize that some tools are not there when you need them. I hope that o-
ther people can also try to code tools that people request for.

 (from: DOC HOLiDAY)

 1. Can someone code a tool for the eventx.bat which checks all file
directories and repacks all files into a special form, like ARJ
into ZIP, add or delete bbs advertisement.....

 (from: dE=tORCH)

 1. I need a wall with nice fading effects, adjustable ansis, and
    a top-ten-writers on the same screen (upper-left-corner e.g.)

 2. Why does the ADD2ADD needs a carrier???
If someone hangs up during the check of new files the tool doesn't
work anymore and the last created addy is added to archives..
with wrong time/date/filename etc... !!! that suxx! please
fix it! - does' it use the pcedoor.dax ? if so it's possible
to copy this one in another dir before executing the tool?????

 3. I need a hall of SHAME - maybe in the same design as the
    Hall of Fame (HOF).

 4. I'd like to have a diz-stamper which adds 2-3 lines under each
    fil_id.diz:
    Diz-Date: xx.xx.xx Newest .Nfo: xx.xx.xx
    Files : xx.xx.xx Newest File: xx.xx.xx
.. ok - it should work together with muhadib's STRIPHEAD -
so only on the first disk of a many-disks-upload should be
    edited...

 5. Can anybody explain me what version of x-tolk i have to use
to get this "Want to (H)angup now or remain online"-Question?
And what is the command-line to get this question???

                                               .
