  PC/X-Magazine is free for everyone and spreading is encouraged. If you
  want to have a printed copy of the current issue (or from prior
  issues), call our BBS and post a message to us so we can work some-
  thing out.

  We will try to make this a very interesting zine with all kinds of in-
  formation that's usefull for (almost) anyone running PC-Express(c).
  Besides this textfile we incorporate much more in the archives that we
  make such as a list of all the BBS's in the world that are using PC-
  Express(c) (registered and unregistered), a source file for an utility
  that someone has coded (and one that works :-)), some ANSI- & ASCII-
  texts, a vote sheet etc.

  In the magazine itself we'll try to hold on to the following contents:

     i---General information
    ii---What's in the archive that you've got (downloaded)
   iii---Editorial section
    iv---Other information
     v---New things, bugs and idea's
    vi---FAQ's
   vii---Short story
  viii---Source section
    ix---Tool reports
     x---Released tools / tools to be coded
    xi---Registrations & changes
   xii---How to register your copy of PC-Express(c)
  xiii---Distributors of this zine
   xiv---End notes

  We'll do much be we can't do it alone; if you have a source-file that
  you want to share with others so that they too can learn to code, if
  you have a textfile with important information, if you have an addi-
  tion to the list with (un-)registered BBS's in your country etc.
  please give it to one the people that is able to incorporate it in the
  next issue of the magazine. We all must try to make this zine interes-
  ting for us all.

  When you want to contact the author with submissions, your vote, com-
  plaints, idea's etc. write a message to one of the above mentioned In-
  ternet addresses, call our BBS or mail us at the following address:

      .     .   :   Hi! welcome...  PCE-Magazine issue 16 for july 1996.
      : _:__ | The sun didn't show up the first half of the month,
      | . / /\ after that she came and now I am sitting here typing

     :__\___\/ .| sometimes I have to do other things you know, like
     /\   __  \.|   writing this zine...I have received a 3 months vaca-
     \ \ \ \ tion after that I finished my 4th year of my medici-
     :\ \___\___\ ne study at the University of Antwerp (everybody
     . \/___/___/ come to Antwerp ;) and now there's time for me to do
      | / _____/\ all the things for which there was not enough time
       / __/\_\/ during the year, like studying more in the Togakure
      /___/\_\/: Ryu Ninpo Taijutsu (what's that!? ;) and working
      \___\/__..| more on the development of pc/x, but also rest in
     /\   __  \ |   the sun, celebrating different birthday's (including
     \ \ \ \ my own) etc. Since this is a magazine for the pc/x
 - -- \ \_______\ scene, I will continue my text with items about this
       \/_______/p! gr8 BBS. On tuesday, july 16, I went (together with
      | . : X-TReMe BBS ;) to MugSHot to work on TheMail, our
      : . . | FrontEnd mailer. Probably you all know that there
      . : are a few FrontEnd mailers available today such as
                    FrontDoor(tm) and D'Bridge(tm). Mailers that have to
 work for many BBS's and even standalone have many items in which they
 must be as general as possible and that is why they can't be specific
 enough for one type of bulletin board system to become an integrated
 part of someone's system. With TheMail, we're succeeding in delivering
 you a FrontEnd mailer that's completely adapted to your BBS; items like
 area folders inside the mailer and an editor for these area's don't
 have to be implemented, since you have a BBS for doing this. When you
 install TheMail, there's no need for viewing the waiting screen of pc/x
 itself, all data of that waiting screen are also in the waiting screen
 of TheMail. Furhtermore, a part of the screen is reserved for the data
 of the events that occur and there's a "To:" and "From:" field (like in
 FrontDoor(tm)) to view the next outgoing call and the system that has
 called you, for example "From: PC-ExpressNet_EHQ (167:490/0)". Until
 now most of the developments in the pc/x scene are written down in this
 zine; ascii's and sourcefiles are also transferred via the archives of
 pce-magazine. When PC-ExpressNet(c) starts, this magazine will be ab-
 sorbed into the net. All the textfiles etc. will be transferred across
 the net: Interesting textfiles from the pc/x whq, sources, ascii's but,
 maybe even more important, hints, tips and solutions to your problems
 will reach everybody on this planet (if connected that is)...

 I have made a small mistake in issue 15 (DOC HOLiDAY called a few hours
 after the release and made it clear to me ;) concerning the mailer. I'd
 written that the mailer should be placed in the FrontEnd.bat, but that
 is *not* true; the mailer is a standalone frontend mailer for pc/x and
 should be placed in front of pc/x. It receives mail and directs users
 to the system (based on error levels and batch files). I am sorry if I
 mislead you, I will take care more of my written words in this issue &
 the issues to come.

 There was a mistake made  with the  telephone number  of Morgoth's BBS;
 the correct number is: +32-26609998 (28k8).

 Today, here in The Netherlands, it has become a fashion that almost e-
 very door-coder that programs for a certain kind of Bulletin Board Sys-
 tem is going to create his or her own system. The last few months I've
 talked to and written with lots of people who decided to make there own
 personal system instead of using versions of systems that're widely ac-
 cepted  like Ami/X(tm),  PC-Board(tm)  and PC-Express(c).  I wonder why
 these people are so desperate in making their own BBS; maybe it has
 something to do with not being able to control the whole BBS, not for
 100% that is, not to have full power over the system. Sometimes people
 forget that, when creating a system like the above, it takes more then
 just coding the program, but also perseverance and endurance. Don't get
 me wrong, I really hope for these people that their system turns out
 great, I like new ideas and sometimes these new ideas are better then
 the older ones, but many times a person just starts to code, not think-
 ing about the future; people register, hoping to maintain their BBS in
 a proper way and suddenly all activities stop. Don't fool people that
 mean it well, if you take the responsibility of being payed for your
 product, deliver something that is good but also something that's going
 to last for a long while. I know that the future can be uncertain, but
 a few things can be thought about.

 It seems that there are quite a few people that run with pc/x but don't
 call the support sites; I don't know the exact situation in other coun-
 tries, but here in The Netherlands this is certainly true. Why don't
 you give us a call so that we know that you're using pc/x too, maybe
 we can help you with problems that might occur, tools etc. When you
 call the support site of your country, you can keep yourself up to date
 with new developments concerning the system with which you're running.

 Before I forget, as from next issue we periodically are going to visit
 a pc/x BBS (one BBS each month), turn it upside down and state the out-
 put in this zine. For the BBS itself it means free advertisment and all
 the people can see what the BBS is really like. So, watch out and pol-
 lish your hdd once more hehe...

 Q - When I am in the SysOp menu of TT I get this menu bar:
     [S]how Nuke Config,[O]ptimize,[F]reeMem,

     but when I look in the doc file I see that the SysOp menu has many
     more options, like below:
     [C]omment,[R]emove comment(s),[D]elete,[M]ove,[N]uke,co[P]y,
     [S]how Nuke Config,[O]ptimize,[F]reeMem,[ESC]Return.

 A - Yes this is a problem we also encountered during developing TT.
     The problem is your ansi driver. All the options are there but they
     don't appear on your screen. It seems that this happens only with
     ANSI.SYS from MS-DOS, microsoft don't seem to care much about dos
     thesedays. But to resolve the problem use NNANSI.COM/SYS, we have
     found that screen writes will be faster with NNANSI and the SysOp
     menu will be fully visible.

     The second way would be to force TheTag to use it's internal ansi
     emulation routines. You can do this by added the paramter -I in
     all your TheTag batches.

 Q - I want to allow some of my users to use TheTag's nuke function.
     I set nuke.bat in my doors config to level 30 and I use TTSETUP.EXE
     and set MUG-NuKE to level 30. But still only people with level 255
     can use the nuke function.

 A - You did everything right but TTPERSON.EXE -L had to be run from
     your logonall and before any try to use TheTag.

     Asof v1.25 TheTag will have a recommend files for nuking option which
     allows your users (those with the right level ofcourse) to select files
     with TheTag and then recommend them for nuking, the SysOp can then
     decide to nuke/award the files or not.

 Q - I use TheTag v1.2 with PC/X 1.2 but MUG-NuKE doesn't write messages to
     the nuked/awarded users why is that?

 A - TheTag v1.20 was designed for PC/X 1.3 not 1.2. The reason why your
     messages are not written is because PC/X 1.3 has a different message-
     base than 1.2. The new messagebase is called a JAM-Messagebase and is
     much more stable than the old one. So the only solution is to install
     PC/X 1.3, which you already downloaded if you have TheTag 1.2.

     Besides that we recommend using TheTag 1.2 under PC/X 1.3 it is also a
     good idea to install PC/X anyway as many things were improved.

 Q - In the TheTag add you said there would also be a German documentation
     file, I see a Dutch and English doc file but where is the German?

 A - Euh..yes don't look at us (Creative Team) but talk to one Michael Feilen
     and one Maren Bitzer (PCX WHQ) who we asked to write a German doc file
     for us and who then told us they would do it...

          What's New in the upcomming version of TheTag (v1.25)
          ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 - Made some subdirs for external files, do not alter the names of the subdirs.
 - Changed the installation program to use ZIP routines instead of LHA.
 - Speeded up reading dirx files a little.
 - The cursor will be turned off when rewriting the screen.
 - Added diraward.mn and dirnuke.mn these files allow you to configure what
   should be written to the dirx files when nuking/awarding files.
 - The TheTag Scan files are no longer made of ansi codes but with pcboard
   colour codes, this way ascii callers do not get an ansi screen write
   once in a while.
 - MUG-Nuke now uses a prompt file instead of displaying "Press Space to
   Resume...". I have included a sample prompt file (SPACE.PCB).
   Make sure MugNuke.INI is configured correctly or else the nuker will not
   find the promptfile!
 - Fixed a bug in the ZippySearch routines.
 - MUG-Nuke now keeps a log file of the nuked files, now tools can be made
   that show the most nuked files/users.
   And SysOps can ofcourse keep track of their CoSysOps heheh...-(;
 - Fixed a few small cosmetic bugs in the status bars.
 - Fixed a bug in the reverselisting.
 - The [Q]uit option when viewing archives didn't work, fixed.
   (thnx to Caligula)
 - Fixed a bug in the copy function.
 - If you tried to move selected files across drives thetag would fail,
   fixed. (how did I ever find that bug?)
 - You can now also choose not to modify a file's diz when nuking.
   (Req. of Caligula)
 - Finished the Revi[V]e option.
   The revive option will only restore files that were nuked, not files
   that were awarded.
   The revive option - if chosen so - will revive incorrectly nuked files,
   it will: 1) restore the deleted file if it was deleted
            2) restore the nuked bytes to the user's account
            3) remove the nuked file from MUG-NuKE's log
            4) scan the dirx.txt for the file and remove nuke comments
 - Added a file_id importer to the SysOp menu. (TheDiz v1.0)
 - Fixed a bug in the screen routines.
   (thnx to GOD HiMSELF)
 - TheTag will now use Upper Memory Blocks if present. You will see a dramatic
   increase of free memory if you are not using DESQView.
   (DESQView does the same thus not leaving any UMBs for TheTag to use)
 I received a few textfiles from Zathur Urthuazzwir,  a user at X-TReMe,
 and in one of them was a message concerning a tool  coded by MuHaDiB. I
 have written this message down beneath.  I hope that MuHaDiB can take a
 look at it and give an answer to Zathur...
 ---( Begin )---
 > The program CR-WUSER111.zip, the node-watcher/user-editor/etc. was a
 > great idea.... I don't know if you have already seen the gamma-release
 > of PCBoard for OS/2, where you can run with no problems a multi board
 > on a sort-of-a-same system as in AMI/X, where when you start the system
 > all modems are started-up and through a node-watcher you can click on
 > the node, and see the screen of the clicked user and eventually chat/etc.
 > with him. I know it was Muadhib from CRAZY who programmed the tool,
 > but can you actually ask him if he in his next version can do something like
 > that? Most people (try at least) to run multi-board systems through
 > OS/2 (which is the safest, but the one which causes the most pain
 > multi-board systems on 3.11 because the system is more stable and less
 > of a pain to install. The program would just have to, when you click a
 > certain node, flick up the screen you need with the according node.
 > It would defitely help many sysops running multi-nodes
 > i.e. you suddenly hear a page and using ALT-TAB click through
 > all the according screens till you get the right one (which slows
 > down the system, and people downloading/uploading get a hell of a time!).
 ---( End )---
 -----------------------------------------------------------------------
 Another part of the textfiles  actually was a request for coding a tool
 concerning new users that  logon to the BBS.  I will also give you this
 message  - and a little text from me at the end -  due to the fact that
 this is an idea for a great tool and I hope that someone can code it...
 ---( Begin )---
 > I've been talking to some people and we are all searching for a program
 > that handels new user requests.... Many BBSs at this moment
 > are running closed systems (due to the recent busts this year by
 > BSA & CRI), and in order to receive new users we must receive messages
 >      Telephone No.: ???
 >      Member of which Boards: ???
 >      Sysop: ???
 >      Etc. Etc.
 >
 > Would you be able (or any of the groups programmers) to write a program
 > which would accordingly run a program which would ask these questions
 > and the messages accordingly be saved in a file which can be accessed
 > by the sysop. He can then read the questionnaire and then accordingly
 > delete/give an account to the according user! And then when a new account
 > has been made save a message to the person writing the request saying
 > that the new account has been made. This would make the life
 > of any sysop very easy, due to the fact that he doesn't have to write
 > the information down (or flip through the user-editor to the BBS every
 > two seconds) and then add the account! (This system is based roughly
 > on a (improved) version of a request program written by FLT for SYSTEM/X!)
 I will try to work out some elements of this tool right now. There are a
 few new user doors but what you want  is a tool that handles everything!
 The tool must be able to interrogate the user, terminate the call, write
 the text in a message/file,  the SysOp can look at the message or he/she
 can do this when entering the tool and  depending upon the results give/
 take an account to/from the user.  When a new account has been made, the
 program must write a message to that user. Perhaps the program could ask
 the SysOp what the preset level must be etc. because then the SysOp does
 not have to go into the User Editor.
  Q: Are there any www-sites & ftp-sites where we can download tools?
  A: Since april 1996 there's an ftp-site  where you can download almost
     all the PC-Express(c) tools that're released.  The ftp-address is:
     ftp:mindweb.com/pce
     PC-Express(c) also has a www-site, the address is:
     WWW.micro.se/Cyberbua/pce.htm
  Q: What's the difference between the demo - and the registered version
     of PC-Express(c)?
  A: The demo version of PC-Express(c) has a few items which can be used
     to a minumum: A maximum of 1 node and a maximum of 2 doors. Further
     all options can be fully used.
  Short desc. : Last 10 callers v1.1 (real time)
  ---( Begin )----------------------------------------------------------
  Here at X-TReMe BBS we haven't got much time to do (extra) things like
  testings doors now that we've taken the responsibilty to program a Fi-
  donet compatible e-mail package called TheMail,  but,  also at the in-
  stance of the door-coder, we want to review a few doors in this issue.
  First we want to give you the results of v1.1 of the real time last 10
  callers tool  from our friend Mad Madness,  who keeps coding tools for
  pc/x, which is great!
  The most important files, besides Drv-lc11.exe,  are the configuration
  file called  Drv-lc11.cfg and  the external ANSI  called Drv-lc11.ans.
  That automatically means that the SysOp can change the frame to his or
  her wishes.  Furthermore,  when we take a look  at the colors,  all of
  them are changeable,  the local baud is definable and also strings for
  resuming with pc/x and for the unknown user (name & location).
  Drv-lc11.exe can  easily be  installed into your BBS,  for instance in
  the LogOnAll.bat,  simply by adding "Drv-lc11.exe -n%1" to your batch.
  The program will show  the external ANSI and add  the data of the last
  10 callers to the ANSI,  so take care of  the X,Y-cordinates  of that
  ANSI, because not all is changeable.
  We, however, do have  a few remarks on the program.  The external ANSI
  file is only semi-adjustable,  the data of the last callers  is always
  displayed at the same X,Y-cordinates. An idea would be the use of MCI
  codes.  Second, the tool always shows  the last  10 callers.  Then the
  order of  displayment,  the coder shows  the last  caller  at the last
  (10th) position  in the list;  I can understand  people that say  that
  they don't like that.  Maybe it can be made configurable? Then the co-
  der doesn't use enough space for the handle and the location of the u-
  sers and reserves too much for other data like upk, downk etc. I would
  be wise to adjust this in the next update.
  A few things to think about: When a user calls with 14400 bps, you can
  also state 14k4 instead of 14400 (saves 1 character and maybe is a ni-
  cer and/or different way of stating the baudrate).  You can hold on to
  a left or to a right column, in this tool it's the left, for instance:
         word-one                                word-one
         word-two               or               word-two
         word-three                            word-three
         word-four                              word-four
         word-twenty-five                word-twenty-five
  What does the user like?  Look for instance at the way of  stating the
  baudrates. Then the headers like name, location, upk, downk etc. can't
  be changed, the tool automatically states this when the doors is acti-
  vated, why is that?  Furhtermore implement the use of a header file, a
  pause-option can be usefull  (also when the SysOp can define more then
  10 callers). There are many things that can be build into the program.
   Conclusion: Oops, competition ;)
  Short desc. : Split-screen chatter
  ---( Begin )----------------------------------------------------------
  Mad Madness (and hopefully all other members from DRV-software) has e-
  volved into a person that codes really nice, I saw that he even relea-
  sed  it's own kit  (DRVKIT1.ZIP).  This time we will review  his split
  screen chatter, coded with PCEKiT v2.67.
  Installing the chatter is  very simple, just as with most of the other
  tools coded for pc/x. The SysOp can make  two batchfiles,  one for the
  normal chat and one for an "emergency" chat. When a user wants to talk
  to the SysOp, he/she can press e.g. "o"  and DRV-cht1.exe prompts this
  user for a reason to chat.  The SysOp is requested to the BBS by means
  of music coming  from the soundcard.  When the SysOp answers,  a split
  screen pops up with the SysOp at the top window. While chatting, seve-
  ral keys can be pressed in order  to evoke certain processes such as a
  capture of the whole screen, printing of the whole screen, jump to DOS
  etc.  If you're planning to use this tool,  you can read it all in the
  documentation, which is included in the archive. Furthermore, the tool
  uses a number of ANSI files when leaving - and when aborting the chat.
  Many items from DRV-cht1.exe can be adjusted in the configuration file
  called DRV-cht1.cfg  like all colors used, prompt for password and the
  password itself,  startup text  from the SysOp  when call is answered,
  the files  when leaving - and when aborting the chat etc.  Second, the
  chatter creates a logfile called  DRV-cht1.log which is good and looks
  like this:
  ---( Begin )--------
  > At 07/19/96 ( 9:35:29 p.m. ) The Doctor entered the chatter.
  > Entered reason : test1 (19 juli 1996)
  > Sysop answered the page from The Doctor and opens chat
  > Sysop ended chat with user
  > At 07/19/96 ( 9:37:10 p.m. ) The Doctor entered the chatter.
  > Entered reason : test2 (19 juli 1996)
  > Sysop answered the page from The Doctor and opens chat
  > Sysop jumped to DOS...
  > Sysop returned from DOS...
  > Sysop ended chat with user
  ---( End )----------
  We have a few remarks on this chatter:
  - when in chatmode, the original cursor flickers at (6,1) all the time
  and this is not the cursor that is present at the place where the text
  is, there we have "solid" cursors,
  - performing a <backspace> from line 2 to line 1 causes the solid cur-
  sor to position at the end of line 1,  not directly behind the text on
  that line,
  - when the SysOp or the user used all 8 lines and presses <enter>, all
  the 8 lines are gone;  this could give problems  when e.g. you write a
  text that takes more then 8 lines,
  - a soundcard (adlib and soundblaster) is necessary,  because else the
  SysOp doesn't know that he/she is requested at the BBS,
  - there are no macros  and the chatter isn't capable of writing messa-
  ges.
   Conclusion: Give it a try, it's worth it...
  => Got the number from....FROM FATAL ILLUSION BBS +49-4921-964021
  ---( End )-----------
  Before the program ends  and the user moves on  with the logon, he/she
  gets to see the file joined.ans(~asc) and the user has to press a key.
  The above is how the program operates, now some remarks about it:
  - the  main screen is made  external  so you can change it,  but don't
  change it too much,  because it's only semi-adjustable  (remember that
  the (x,y) coordinates of the groups mentioned and also the description
  of these groups that is going to be filled in  by the user has a posi-
  tion that can't be changed),
  - the program creates a answers.txt file in which the data of the user
  is mentioned; the first time the file is created it's 0 bytes big,
  - there are  a number of standard lines  mentioned like  "we will know
  check you scene-knowledge. You will have to fill out 7 questions"  and
  "okay, last question, where did you get this number from?";  these li-
  nes can't be changed or adjusted and appear on pre-selected places,
  - the abbreveation of a group is bound to a maximum of 4 characters,
  - the tool  actually is a replacement  for one single question  in the
  script-files (like e.g. script28).
   Conclusion: my script-files have become shorter again...
   Rating: 55%
  Reviewed by : The Doctor
  Short desc. : Goodbye door v1.0
  ---( Begin )----------------------------------------------------------
  When the user wants to leave the BBS and presses "!", "g" or "bye", he
  or she -normally- logs off the system. This can be done by pc/x itself
  or by one of the logoff doors  that take over this function. DRV-soft-
  ware brings us such a program.  Mad Madness coded a tool that can per-
  form two functions,  bring the user back to the BBS  or throw the user
  out.  When it performs  a logoff,  the user gets to see  a file called
  goodbye.ans(~.asc),  which must  be located  in the same  directory as
  the program. Almost nothing (except goodbye.ans(~.asc)) is adjustable,
  so like it or not; you can't change the screen, the text or the colors
  that the program uses.
   Conclusion: Nice tool for 1 (or 2) BBS's.
