PC/X-Magazine is free for everyone and spreading is encouraged. If you
want to have a printed copy of the current issue (or from prior
issues), call our BBS and post a message to us so we can work some-
  thing out.

We will try to make this a very interesting zine with all kinds of in-
formation that's usefull for almost anyone running PC-Express. Besides
this textfile we incorporate much more in the archives that we make
such as a list of all the BBS's in the world that are using PC-Express
(registered and unregistered), a source file for an utility that some-
one has coded (and one that works :-)), some ANSI- & ASCII-texts, a
  vote sheet etc.

In the magazine itself we'll try to hold on to the following contents:

  a) General information,
  b) What's in the archive that you've got (downloaded),
  c) Editorial section,
  d) Other information,
  e) New things, bugs and idea's,
  f) Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's),
  g) Short story (optional),
  h) Source section (MugSHot),
  i) Tool reports,
  j) Released utilities / tools to be coded,
  k) Registrations and changes (November),
  l) How to register your copy of PC-Express,
  m) Distributors of this zine,
  n) End notes.

We'll do much be we can't do it alone; if you have a source-file that
you want to share with others so that they too can learn to code, if
you have a textfile with important information, if you have an addi-
tion to the list with (un-)registered BBS's in your country etc.
please give it to one the people that is able to incorporate it in the
next issue of the magazine. We all must try to make this zine interes-
  ting for us all.

When you want to contact the author with submissions, your vote, com-
plaints, idea's etc. write a message to one of the above mentioned In-
ternet addresses, call our BBS or mail us at the following address:

allfix (c)). These programs will be delived to you via the pc/x pack-
age. The SysOp always has the choice to use them or don't use them. It
can be done by simply activating an option in the Config.exe. You pro-
bably could understand that these things take a while, because it must
be done right, that's why this is for pc/x v1.50, first other things
have to be done (for pc/x v1.40).

  ----------

A few other things now. Caligula asked if the source section could be
removed from the magazine itself, because the sources were already
present in the \SRC-directory and it decreased the readability of this
this zine. On the other hand, when there are interesting things or an-
swers that contain source-parts, it would be wise if they were placed
under a source-header. I think that it will be best if we announce the
sources very shortly (what is it, who made it etc.) and answers some
questions, but let the sources itself remain in the \SRC-directory and
not anymore in the zine. If you have any complaints about this, please
tell me so we can work out a general solution.

// Short explanation: New things, bugs and ideas are written at ran-
dom; the name of the person who discovered it is written between
  hooks //

  .--------------------------------------------------------------------.
: PCE2JAM.exe crashes at my BBS when changes the messagebase of con- :
: ference 11. At Caligula's BBS, it crashes also. Furhter more, an :
: "big" spelling bug has been made; it called a "CONVERTER" instead :
  : of a "CONVETER". :
  : (The Doctor) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: There is something strange going on with the messagebase, I'll try :
  : to explain it: :
  : :
: - the first message that I wrote was an EALL message; this message :
: was not displayed to the users, :
: - the seconds message that I wrote was a private message; this :
: message was not displayed to the specific user, :
: - messages that followed after these two prior ones were dis- :
: played, but all the messages were said to be EALL messages, :
: while they were private messages, :
: - when you press "r", pc/x does display the message that at first :
  : was not displayed. :
: - The number of the message is displayed at the wrong place (or we :
: have to do something at the language lines ("Number" and "---"). :
: - Sometimes private messages are NOT displayed to the specific :
  : user (e.g. to the SysOp)! :
  : (The Doctor) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: When the SysOp logs into the system, pc/x states the results while :
: the SysOp was absent. Please fix this small bug: :
  : :
  : Conf 3 |   ----->  Conf  3 |                                       :
  : Conf 17 | Conf 17 | :
  : :
  : (The Doctor) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: When pc/x waits for a call, the SysOp has the possibility to go to :
: the User Editor (F6), but why can't the SysOp move to the Config. :
: exe? I can imagine that this can be very handy instead of first :
: moving to DOS. This automatically implicates that pc/x should read :
: the dropfile (also whenever a door i started). I thought that this :
: was already implicated in pc/x, but apparently it wasn't... :
  : :
  : (The Doctor) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: Have another look at the time displayed in the waiting screen; :
  : beneath 10:00, you'll sometimes get times like: 6:353 etc. :
  : :
  : (The Doctor) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: It happend many times with pc/x v1.306, when a user finished up- :
  : loading/downloading files to/from the BBS, pc/x dropped the car- :
  : rier! :
  : :
  : (The Doctor) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: PC-Express should have a more general logfile. For now we have :
: LogX.txt, but with the new comming mailer featurs, the already :
: present EventX.bat etc., it would be wise if all activities were :
: mentioned in one single logfile. You could keep the LogX.txt for :
: acitivities of the users but make a PCELOG.TXT where all acti- :
  : vities are mentioned. :
  : :
  : (The Doctor) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: Maybe it sounds strange but could you make PC-Express make a sound :
: saying "everything is allright" (frontdoor does the same!). When I :
: am in my bed or busy doing something so that I cannot look at my :
: computer, it would be great if I could hear that everything is ok. :
: Please do something like this: Every minute, let PC-Express make :
: a <click><clock> sound. This can be very reassuring! :
  : :
  : (The Doctor) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: When a user enters the password wrong three times, pc/x normally :
: should display the "Access denied!" sentence from the "Express. :
  : txt". In pc/x v1.30 it doesn't display it... :
  : :
  : (Caligula) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: In the config.exe, when defining the conferences, the "[X] net- :
: mail" option does not work in v1.305. You cannot write a message :
: to a user that does not exist on your BBS. :
  : :
  : (The Doctor) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
  : PC-Express v1.305 still doesn't read the (altered) dropfile when :
: returning from a door. Please change this so that changes can be :
: made which can be read directly if a user return to the BBS. :
  : :

  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: When you install a FOSSIL-driver by means of incorporating it into :
: your Config.sys or AutoExec.bat and after that install the use of :
  : a FOSSIL-dirver in PC-Express (Config.exe, Modem parameters), PC- :
: Express does *NOT* work. It will only work if you install UART in :
: PC-Express. Only in this way PC-Express runs and also the FOSSIL :
: runs, so that you can run with all your doors. How can it be that :
  : PC-Express has such an error?... :
  : :

  : When using the "rs"-command, pc/x (v1.305) always displays the :

   f. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) //
 - -------------------------------------//- -

Q: Will PC-Express be going to support networks like Fidonet in the
     future?

A: Yes. In PC-Express v1.3 we hope that we have replaced the current
message-base with JAM-base so that besides our own network other
mail/file networks like Fidonet can be incorporated too.

Q: I see many errors occur when I start v1.20demo, for example when
PC/X asks for the handle and location/group; why is that?

A: PC-Express v1.20 works with language files. Many users say that the
language files are not incorporated in the pc/x-archive, but they
are! Take a look at the archive "pce00000.003". Inside that archive
are 4 files which form the English language. Place them in your
textpath (e.g. c:\bbs\node0). Next, take care of the fact that the
English language is correctly installed in the config.exe. When you
now start pc/x, you don't see these errors anymore.

Q: Are there any ftp-sites where we can download pc/x tools?

A: I don't know any ftp sites that hold tools for pc/x. Maybe in the
future some big servers could have a directory for these tools and
one or more newsgroups could be started, but for now almost no in-
formation concerning pc/x is available on The Internet.

   What's new in PC-Express(c) v1.30 //
 - ----------------------------------//- -

 .---.---------------------------------------------------------------------.
: + : In the Config.exe is a new option where you can enable or disable :
: : the auto-comment that a user has to send when calling your BBS :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : + : There is a new option in the Config.exe with which you're able to :
: : define the maximum days after which the user has to change his/her :
: : password; if the number is set to "0", the option is disabled :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : + : PC-Express(c) now supports voice-connects. If pc/x located a voice- :
 : : connect, it'll start a batchfile called "VoiceX.bat", where "X" is :
 : : the Node-number. With this option it's possible to start a voice- :
 : : mailbox, :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : If an uploaded archive has no file_id.diz (and if you have enabled :
: : the option in the Config.exe), pc/x asks whether the description :
: : that the user writes should be incorporated as a file_id.diz into :
 : : the archive. PC-Express(c) supports the following archive-types: :
 : : ZIP/LHA/LZH/ARJ/DMS/ARC/PAK. If the user enters (y)es, pc/x calls :
: : the batchfile "Pack_Diz.bat", with which you're able to inset the :
 : : File_Id.diz into the archive. PC-Express(c) will add the beneath :
: : mentioned variables to this batchfile: :
 : : :
 : : %1 = Extension of the archive (e.g. .zip) :
 : : %2 = File_Id.diz, including path :
 : : %3 = Archive, including path :
 : : %4 = The Node-number :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : ! : Fixed a small bug in the NoWanted.txt routine :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : Added a new variable called %4 when using an external protocol; :
: : this is the upload path (a request from MuHaDiB) :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : Added an option in the Config.exe program with which you can allow :
: : the same user to be on more then 1 node at the same time :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: ! : Fixed a bug in the usereditor (week and month statistics one field :
 : : longer) :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : Fixed the swap routine; now it swaps to EMS/XMS/Disk :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : Added a new MCI code called @PAUSE@. If you call this MCI code pc/x :
 : : will wait for a <space> :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: ! : Tried to fix some bugs in the Event-routine, i hope it works better :
 : : now :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : In the prior versions, when you pressed "HOME", pc/x started the :
 : : batchfile called "Terminal.bat". From now on, pc/x will execute a :
 : : batchfile called "TermX.bat", where "X" is the Node-number. In :
: : this way it's easier to create batchfiles for each node :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : During the download the SysOp can see the current file number and :
: : the total number of files in the big transfer window :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : ! : If you uploaded a dupe, pc/x moved the file into the HOLD-directory :
: : but posted the description into the file listing of the upload di- :
: : rectory; this is solved now (thanks to MuHaDiB) :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : + : Updated my APRO library from v2.01 to v2.03 :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : + : PC-Express(c) has a search routine to search for a string in the :
 : : message-base. With the "rs"-command (read-search) you can enable :
: : this function. You can choose whether to look in the message hea- :
: : ders, message bodies or both. PC-Express(c) wil search for the gi- :
: : ven string in all the messages that exist in this conference :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : PC-Express(c) has a new waiting screen; in this screen the current :
: : time and date are inserted and pc/x also shows how many faxes are :
 : : received :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : ! : Small fixes and improvements at the system-detection routine :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: ! : Fixed the time-stamp bug (only at archives pc/x sets the new date!) :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : ! : Fixed a bug in the dupe-check routine during the upload :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : ! : PC-Express(c) crashed when it read the File_Id.diz of an archive :
 : : when this File_Id.diz was read-only or hidden; it's fixed now :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: ! : When you wanted to reserve the BBS for a special user, pc/x crashed :
: : with a runtime error 103. This was a realy lame bug but it took me :
 : : hours to find it :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : Made in improvement in the message-base; now the user has the pos- :
: : sibility to send a (c)arbon (c)opy to another user. You can enable :
: : or disable this new function in the Config.exe program (thanks to :
 : : The Doctor) :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : ! : PC-Express(c) crashed when a user checked a file-directory (e.g. :
 : : F H) and there was no file listing available (pc/x crashed with a :
: : runtime error 103); this is fixed now :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : PC-Express(c) now reads and writes the dropfile when you start the :
: : batches "Check.bat" and "Extdiz.bat" and it also gives the Node- :
 : : number to these batches. In "Check.bat", the Node-number is "%6" :
 : : and in "Extdiz.bat" the Node-number is "%4" (thanks to GOD HiMSELF) :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: ! : PC-Express(c) never really supported the external full screen edi- :
: : tor because you could enter it in the Config.exe to allow the users :
: : to choose it (via the "w"-command), but pc/x nver started an exter- :
: : nal editor (HE SKY STORM & LARIC, what did you do?). From now on, :
 : : pc/x calls the external program "EXT_EDIT.EXE". When a user chooses :
: : to work with this editor, pc/x gives parameters for this program: :
 : : :
 :   : -Nx     (X := Node-number)                                          :
 :   : -Cx     (X := Conference-number)                                    :
 : : -Rx (if you reply a mail X it's the msg-number of the reply) :
: : -S (if the User chooses the 'C' command to enter a mail) :
 : : /Local (if it's a local connection) :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : Made an option in the Config.exe in which you can define whether or :
: : not using wildcards at the LogOn-procedure and when entering mail :
: : (some users asked for this option to protect against hackers) :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : Improvements made with the "WHO"-command (much more status). Here :

  `--------------------------------------------------------------------'
This is the second tool from [-mANsON!], this time he provides us with
a file_id.diz-adds cutter (v1.1). It is a tool that uses a data file
in which the SysOp can put most of the adds that he/she wants to dele-
te from the file_id.diz, so that it won't be mentioned in the descrip-
tion. Further more, Cut-Adds.exe needs to know the drive+path where to
look for the file_id.diz, the syntax is:

  Cut-Adds.exe <drive>:\<path>\cut-adds.dat <drive>:\<path>,

  e.g. Cut-Adds.exe c:\temp\cut-adds.dat c:\temp2.

Fortunately I know what this tool does, but next time: WRITE ENGLISH!
Your tool reaches the whole world, so write in the number one interna-
  tional language.

Let's have a quick look at what this tool exactly does:

Great to see that Mad Madness is still coding and now he has released
his first tool. The program is coded with PC/XKiT v2.66, because he
has kept this version from his CT-time :-), don't forget to update it
when the release version is available... This tool looks at the secu-
rity level of the user that calls your system and displays an ANSI- or
ASCII file. You can place this program in your LogOnAll.bat, this is
  how it's going to look:

DRV-SOFTWARE SECURITY LEVEL COMMENTER IS EXECUTED...

<After this line the drv-xx(x).a* is displayed and after that the fol-
lowing line will be written down:>

   Press SPACEBAR to continue...

  <The user can now press a key (e.g. <space> :-) and he/she will return
  to the BBS-prompt>.

When the SysOp logs on local, always the ANSI-file is displayed.

Mad Madness provides the SysOp with an reasonable documentation, so it
shouldn't be too hard to install it...

"tHe lUXEMBOURGISh sCENe iS bACk wITh a rEAl cOOl rEALEASe.." Indeed!
Nice thing of you to code this LogOff door. When the user wants to
leave your BBS and presses "g","!" or "bye", this door is started. The
ANSI-file "OneLine.ans" will be presented to the user with all the
one-liners typed in by the users (kept in a file called "Liners.txt").
Then the user has the possibility to add an one-liner, to view who
wrote these one-liners (kept in a file called "WhoWrote.txt"), return
to the BBS or leave your board. The user can browse through these op-
tions by means of the cursor-keys. When the user decides to leave your
BBS, the file "LogOff.ans" will be presented to him/her. Here you can
add other BBS's that're in your group etc.

When I want to logoff a BBS, I'm not doing that just because i'm try-
ing out the functions of the BBS, I WANT to leave... When you make a
door for such an option, always remember that it must be done relati-
vely fast and that you can't implement animations etc. I'm NOT saying
that you've done this, I'm just writing it so that we all keep this in
  mind.

The documentation that these people wrote is sufficient enough for the
tool that they coded, so no problems here. You can adjust the ANSI-fi-
les that the tool uses ("LogOff.ans" and "OneLine.ans"), you can't ad-
just the colour of the text and the font that the tool uses.

GOD HiMSELF! reported to me that when you want to return to the BBS,
the cursor is lost. When executing another door, the cursor returns.
Have a look at this if you want...

I Hope to see more of you in the future!

  | Short Desc.: Keep logfile of the conferences that're joined. |
  `--------------------------------------------------------------------'
The second tool released by DRV-Software, coded by Mad Madness. He gi-
ves us a join conference logfile keeper. This tool remembers the con-
ferences which the user joined and writes these data into a separate
logfile in order to give you as much information as possible about the
acitivities of the users on your BBS.

First Mad released the archive CONFLOG.ZIP and after that CONFLOG1.
ZIP; these archive hold the same tool but first Mad forgot to include
  a correct File_Id.diz.

You can place this tool at the end of your J.bat:

  -( Begin )------

  @Echo off
  Join.exe -n%1
  Conflog.exe -n%1

  -( End )--------

Conflog.exe makes a separate logfile called "Drv-Conf.log". This log-
file only holds the actual facts that happened and not the date, time
etc. so that in fact we can't do much with these data.

  Example of "Drv-Conf.log":

  -( Begin )----------------------

The Doctor joined conference 1 !
The Doctor joined conference 3 !

  -( End )------------------------

What you could do is improve the above mentioned logfile or add data
to the LogX.txt. For instance, delete the last entry/line of the LogX.
txt and replace it with the data made by this tool (including date and
  time).

[-mANsON!] has improved the program, it still does the same as the 1st
version (nothing more). This is the way to put it in your ExtDiz.Bat:

  `--------------------------------------------------------------------'
Finally, a nuker for pc/x :-) Thankyou MuHaDiB for coding such a tool.
This nuker (for pc/x v1.18+) consists of a number of files:

  Nuke.exe ------> The online nuker,
Nukecmt.ini ---> A textfile where you can place 14 comments, example:

                   ---( Begin )----------

                   FiRsT AnD OnLy WaRnInG
                   You're Upload is Shit
                   nO BBS AdS
                   etc. etc.

                   ---( End )------------

  NukeExec.exe --> The offline nuker,
Nuke.cfg ------> Configuration file to edit to colour and the sec. le-
vels used by the nuker, example:

                   ---( Begin )-------------------------------

                   @X04    ; Color of nukecomments in DiRx.TXT
100 ; seclvl to write comments
100 ; seclvl to give / take ratio
100 ; seclvl to delete files

                   ---( End )---------------------------------
NukeMsg.exe ---> Nuke message writer (also supports JAM base),
  NDellog.exe ---> Nuke logfile deleter,
Nuke.bat ------> Batchfile for installing the nuker, example:

                   ---( Begin )----------

                   @Echo off
                   Nuke.exe -n%1

                   ---( End )------------

  NukeLogX.txt --> Nuke logfile (where "X" is the node-number).

You can install "Nuke.bat" as a door into pc/x and in this way start
the online nuker if you want. The programs "NukeExec.exe", "NukeMsg.
exe" and "NDellog.exe" can be executed from the System.bat, example:

  ---( Begin )-------

  NukeExec.exe %node% <--- string = NukeExec.exe %node%,
  NukeMsg.exe -n0 <--- string = NukeMsg.exe -n%node%
  NDellog.exe 30 <--- string = NDellog.exe <max. days in NDel-
                                      logX.txt>
  ---( End )---------

The user with a sec. level high enough to execute specific parts of
the nuker can give 14 standard comments to uploaded files, 1 own typed
comment or can add nothing. This user also can give/take bytes; there
are 4 standard sentences, a possibility to type an own comment and one
possibility to add nothing to the comment for the give/take bytes in-
formation. This user can take/give an amount of bytes and delete the
uploaded files. All depends on the security level that the SysOp has
installed in the file "Nuke.cfg". The deleted files should be moved to
the directory "DELETED.BK", created by the nuker and placed in the up-
  load directory of the conference.

You have made a small mistake in the syntax of NukeMsg.exe; it's not
  NukeMsg.exe %node% but NukeMsg.exe -n%node%. Also correct this error
  in your documentation.

CONFLOG.ZIP became FONFLOG.ZIP but was not actually "deleted" from the
HD (the file remained in the upload directory and was NOT moved to the
  "DELETED.BK"-directory); these were the results:

  ---( Begin )----------------------------

  CONFLOG.ZIP F 960204
Conference LOGFILE Keeper ! by DRV-SOFT
   Uploaded By: Dennis vink

  ---( End )------------------------------

  became:

  ---( End )--------------------------------------------

Imagine this: A co-SysOp calls your BBS and detects files that are up-
loaded to the system but aren't correct; he/she will execute the nuker
but after entering the text nothing appears in the dirX.txt, he/she
will have to logoff and call again when the offline nuker etc. is pla-
ced in the System.bat. You can put all these tools in the "Nuke.bat"
file, but it's better to make 1 tool that does all the work instead of
  the above mentioned collection.

I will not describe how the nuker exactly works when you're online,
because that should be mentioned in the accompanied documentation.

If you want, I can make a doc file for this tool; contact me and we'll
  discuss about it...
