  PC/X-Magazine is free for everyone and spreading is encouraged. If you
  want to have a printed copy of the current issue (or from prior
  issues), call our BBS and post a message to us so we can work some-
  thing out.

  We will try to make this a very interesting zine with all kinds of in-
  formation that's usefull for almost anyone running PC-Express. Besides
  this textfile we incorporate much more in the archives that we make
  such as a list of all the BBS's in the world that are using PC-Express
  (registered and unregistered), a source file for an utility that some-
  one has coded (and one that works :-)), some ANSI- & ASCII-texts, a
  vote sheet etc.

  In the magazine itself we'll try to hold on to the following contents:

  a) General information,
  b) What's in the archive that you've got (downloaded),
  c) Editorial section,
  d) Other information,
  e) New things, bugs and idea's,
  f) Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's),
  g) Short story (optional),
  h) Source section (MugSHot),
  i) Tool reports,
  j) Released utilities / tools to be coded,
  k) Registrations and changes (November),
  l) How to register your copy of PC-Express,
  m) Distributors of this zine,
  n) End notes.

  We'll do much be we can't do it alone; if you have a source-file that
  you want to share with others so that they too can learn to code, if
  you have a textfile with important information, if you have an addi-
  tion to the list with (un-)registered BBS's in your country etc.
  please give it to one the people that is able to incorporate it in the
  next issue of the magazine. We all must try to make this zine interes-
  ting for us all.

  When you want to contact the author with submissions, your vote, com-
  plaints, idea's etc. write a message to one of the above mentioned In-
  ternet addresses, call our BBS or mail us at the following address:

      . . : Welcome to the first issue in 1996! Also this year
      : _:__ | we plan to give you all the information about your
      | . /   /\     favorite  BBS-system,  but we  actually  want to be
- --- | :/   / / --  better then we  were in 1995,  so there's  a lot to
      | /___/ / | do for us. I hope that the above also goes for the
     :__\___\/ .| other people that work (hard) to lift pc/x to the
     /\   __  \.|    top!
     \ \   \   \
     :\ \___\___\    I think that 1996 began very good for PC/X! Creati-
     . \/___/___/ ve Team has released TheTag (already an update too)
      | /  _____/\   for pc/x v1.19+ so your BBS should look a bit nicer
       / __/\_\/ and the users don't need to complain because they
      /___/\_\/: can install very much and make the BBS a bit how
      \___\/__..| they like it best; interactive? Further more, we're
     /\   __  \ |    going to provide all the coders with a new PC/XKiT,
     \ \ \ \ so I hope that many tools are going to be released
 - -- \ \_______\    in the future.
       \/_______/p!
      | . : For those of you who are curious about pc/x v1.30,
      : .   .   |    I can say that  at the moment  we're testing the -
      . : version (or alpha to some people :-). There have
                . been a lot of improvements concerning v1.20; have
 a look at it at the support site in your country and read further in
 this magazine to find out more about this new version!

 I kicked out the network part in this magazine and made it an external
 file. First we'll have to concentrate on v1.30 and after that we can
 start with a worldwide network, but it's a question whether or not to
 make it internal so that pc/x remains faaast... Look at this way, other
 bulletins board systems need to make use of other programs for handling
 the mail etc. I don't like that idea, pc/x must remain a BBS that holds
 almost everything the SysOp wants and is easily configurable. That is
 why we think about writing a frontend mailer, a mailtosser/scanner and
 other necessary programs, but that's something for the future. First
 other things are necessary like solving most of the bugs that might oc-
 cur and adding more commands to pc/x. This is the idea for v1.40.

 Xecaz has changed his BBS-software, that's why he no longer is the Swe-
 disch Support site for PC/X. If anyone is interested in becomming the
 new support site, please let us know a.s.a.p.

  -1- File mover for PC/X
      ===================
      tRIFOX reminded me of the fact that last time we requested a file
      nuker/mover but GPS already made such a file mover. The archive is
      called "GPS_MOVE.ZIP". We have tested this mover for you and the
      results can be found later in this zine. Thanks for your comment!

  -2- A small note on TheTag
      ======================
      Last month, after that Creative Team has released TheTag, we have
      tried to improve this program by solving some bugs that occurred
      as well as adding extra options; that's why we'll release an up-
      date of this program very soon. The extra functions work for all
      the users, registered or not registered.

  : When a user uploads a file to the BBS, pc/x checks if there is a :
  : file_id.diz in this archive so that it can use this file_id.diz as :
  : a description. When pc/x does not find a file_id.diz, it prompts   :
  : for entering a description by the user. When the user has entered :
  : this description, let pc/x incorporate this description as a file_ :
  : id.diz into the archive (only if no file_id.diz is in the archive, :
  : so don't incorporate it when there is a file_id.diz but the user :
  : wants to enter his/her own description (in that case the original :
  : file_id.diz would be overwritten)). An example of the above writ- :

   f. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) //
 - -------------------------------------//- -

  Q: Will PC-Express be going to support networks like Fidonet in the
     future?

  A: Yes. In PC-Express v1.3 we hope that we have replaced the current
     message-base with JAM-base so that besides our own network other
     mail/file networks like Fidonet can be incorporated too.

  Q: I see many errors occur when I start v1.20demo, for example when
     PC/X asks for the handle and location/group; why is that?

  A: PC-Express v1.20 works with language files. Many users say that the
     language files are not incorporated in the pc/x-archive, but they
     are! Take a look at the archive "pce00000.003". Inside that archive
     are 4 files which form the English language. Place them in your
     textpath (e.g. c:\bbs\node0). Next, take care of the fact that the
     English language is correctly installed in the config.exe. When you
     now start pc/x, you don't see these errors anymore.

  Q: Are there any ftp-sites where we can download pc/x tools?

  A: I don't know any ftp sites that hold tools for pc/x. Maybe in the
     future some big servers could have a directory for these tools and
     one or more newsgroups could be started, but for now almost no in-
     formation concerning pc/x is available on The Internet.

                      .

   g. Short story  //

  I think that most people like to read what pc/x v1.30 will bring them,
  so that is why I give you the "WhatsNew.doc" for pc/x v1.30():

 +  New feature added.
 !  Bug fix.
 -  Removed feature.
 # Known bugs that still exist.
 $  Information from coder.

! Fixed a small bug in the NoWanted.txt Routine,

+ Added an new variable called %4 when using an external protocol; this
  is the upload path (a request from MuHaDiB),

+ Added an option in the Config.exe program with which you can allow the
  same user to be on more then 1 node at the same time,

+ Fixed a bug in the usereditor (week and month statistis one field
  longer),

+ Fixed the Swap Routine; now it swaps to ems/xms/disk,

+ Added a new MCI Code called @PAUSE@. If you call this MCI code pc/x
  will wait for a <space>,

! Tried to fix some bugs in the event-routine, I hope it works better now,

+ In prior version of pc/x, when you pressed ESC, pc/x started the batch-
  file called "terminal.bat". From now on, pc/x will execute a batchfile
  called "termX.bat" where "X" is the node-number. In this way it's more
  easy to create batchfiles for each node,

+ During the download the SysOp can see the current file number and the
  total number of files in the big transfer window,

! If you uploaded a dupe, pc/x move the file into the HOLD-directory BUT
  posted the description into the file listing of the upload area; this
  is now solved (thanks to MuHaDiB),

+ Updated my APRO libery from V2.01 to V2.03,

+ PC/X has a search routine to search for a string in the message base.
  With the command "rs" (read search) you can enable this function.
  You can choose whether to look in the message headers, message body
  or both. PC/X will search for the given string in all the messages
  that exist in this conference,

+ PC/X has a new waiting screen. In this new screen the current time and
  date are inserted and pc/x also shows how many faxes are received,

! Small fixes and improvements at the system-detection routine,

! Fixed the Time-Stamp-Bug (only at archives pc/x sets the new date!),

! Fixed a bug in the dupe-check routine during the upload,

! PC/X crashed when it read the FILE_ID.DIZ of an archive and when this
  FILE_ID.DIZ was read-only or hidden; it's fixed now,

! When you wanted to reserve the BBS for a special user, pc/x crashed
  with a runtime error 103. This was a realy lame bug but tooks me
  hours to find it,

+ Made an improvement in the message base. Now the user has the possi-
  bility to send cc (carbon copy) to another user. You can enable or
  disable this new function in the Config.exe programme (thanks to
  The Doctor),

! PC/X crashed when a user checked a file-directory (e.g. F H) and there
  was no file listing available; pc/x crashed with a runtime error 103;
  this is fixed now,

+ PC/X now reads and writes the dropfile when you start the batches
  "CHECK.BAT" and "EXTDIZ.BAT" and it also gives the node-number to
  these batches. In CHECK.BAT, the node-number is "%6" and in EXTDIZ.BAT,
  the node-number is "%4" (thanks to GOD HIMSELF!),

! PC/X never really supported the external full screen editor, because
  you could enter it in the Config.exe to allow the users to choose it
  (with the W-command), but pc/x never started an external editor (HE
  SKY STORM & LARIC, what did you do?). From now on, pc/x calls the
  external program "EXT_EDIT.EXE". When a user chooses to work with this
  editor, pc/x gives parameters for this program:

   -Nx     (X := Node-number)
   -Cx     (X := Conference-number)
   -Rx (if you reply a mail X it is the message number of the reply)
   -S (if the User chooses the 'C' command to enter a mail)
   /Local  (if it's a local connection),

+ Made an option in the Config.exe in which you can define whether or not
  using wildcards at the LogOn-routine and when entering mail (some users
  asked for this option to protect against hackers),

+ Improvements made with the 'WHO'-command (much more status). Here is a
  full new list:

  Status:  0  Browsing                  ExtStatus: -
  Status:  1  UL                        ExtStatus: Filename

+ Made small improvements in the 'Open' command,

+ The user is able to choose (via the W-command) between two kinds of
  Global Mail Scan; the first one (the default one ) is the original
  pc/x mail scan, the second one is the /X like mail scan (thanks to
  The Doctor),

! Fixed a bug in the MCI-Code section,

+ The SysOp is able to enter an own string in the Config.exe program (e.g.
  greetings from .\\ichael) and when pressing STRG-F6 this string is
  displayed. In this way the SysOp doesn't always have to type this end
  string when writing a message,

+ At the Global New Files Scan, the user has the possibility to scan for
  new files only in the upload areas of each conference or in all areas
  of each conference. This option is switchable in the Config.exe,

+ Rewritten the upload routine; now the internal z-modem protocol is ex-
  tracted from pc/x and has become a stand alone program. This saves
  much memory and tranfers with more then 50 files are possible,

! fixed a bug in writing the LASTCALL.DAT, it rised and rised; now there
  are just the 100 enties as how it should be,

+ Added a few commands while you are looking in the filelist:
  Z = Zippyseach
  D = Ends the scanning and start the download
  V = View a text file
  G = Download the Full Filelist
      ( this command creates a full list of all filelists of
        this command and the user can then download it)
  A = if you have a door installed called 'AV' for View Archive then
      PCE allows you to start the door in the filelist,

+ When scanning the file-listings, pc/x shows a "%"-number which shows
  the position in the file-listing,

+ Inserted a new command called "rz" by which the user can upload imme-
  diatly and pc/x doesn't show upload.a* or asks for filenames and the
  protocol being used; pc/x will take the selected ones (request from
  Caligula),

+ Rewritten the download routine. Now the internal z-modem protocol is
  extracted from pc/x and has become a stand alone program. This saves
  much memory and transfers with more then 50 files are possible,

+ Rewritten the flag-database; now you're able to flag 65000 files and
  download them in one time! PC/X stores the data in a file and not in
  the memory,

! Fixed a display-bug in the statusline (seclvl) (thanks to The Doctor),

! Changed the "(C)hange Protocol" into "(P)rotocol" (done for Caligula),

! PC/X now takes the baudrate from the dropfile (thanks to MugSHot),

+ From now on, all .ANS/.ASC files support multi-language too! This means
  that if the user wants to view e.g. bull 1 and this user has selected
  language number two, pc/x first checks if there's a file called
  bull1.an1. If it exists, pc/x will show this file, if it doesn't exist,
  pc/x will show bull1.ans. The same goes for viewing ASCII files,

! Small bugfixes and improvements in the file-flag routine,

! Fixed a bug in the Language routines (now pc/x will show the english
  (language 1) words if it cannot find the right language words),

+ Small code optimizings,

+ Now I have include a Users.Dat Packer-Programme in the userseditor
  that deletes all users from the .dat file that have the "deleted"-flag
  and don't the flag "NOKILL",

! At rewriting the messagebase, I have solved (I hope) all sharing
  problems at the multinode BBS,

! From now on pc/x only saves the filename when attaching a file and not
  the full path. PC-Express will search in all filelistings when attaching
  a file. In this way the hack in the last month aren't possible anymore,

+ We have rewritten the whole messagebase; from now on the format of the
  messagebase is 100% compatible to JAM. Hence it appears that netmail
  has become possible,

! Fixed the strange bug that, when joining a conference in pc/x, pc/x
  always showed a strange number as highest message,

! Hopefully fixed the 24000 baud connect bug.

                        .

  `--------------------------------------------------------------------'
  Another product from our german friend. He coded a user lister for us,
  a tool where the SysOp can adjust things and make it the way he/she
  wants it to be for his/her BBS. For that, DOC has made a configuration
  program in which 11 parameters can be installed, e.g. a string for
  hidden users, the framwork, the colours etc. He also made an external
  header and footer file (ANSI & ASCII) so that you can almost complete-
  ly make it the way you want.

  When the user enter the "l" at the BBS-prompt, the tool asks whether
  they want to view all the users at the BBS or just those that have ac-
  cess to the conference in which the user is at that moment. It could
  be functional if they also could press ESC when they don't want to see
  the user list and want to go back to the BBS. The users are listed in
  alphabetic order (this takes a few seconds before the user gets to see
  the list (measured with a users.dat holding approx. 340 users)).

  DOC HOLiDAY provides a sufficient documentation so that everybody is
  able to install this door into his/her BBS. You have to make the
  batchfile yourself, "l.bat" is not incorporated into the archive (DOC,
  however, claims many times that it is), but I think that that won't be
  hard to do...

  PS: I hope that you know that "THE_LIST" was the name of a tool which
      was coded by Spider; it was a filetagger :-)

   Conclusion:
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    A good and adjustable user lister for pc/x v1.20 & v1.30.
  `--------------------------------------------------------------------'
  This is the first tool  coded by [-mANsON!] for pc/x (v1.20). Great to
  see that more people start to produce tools  for this growing BBS-sys-
  tem. This is an utility for the file_id.diz that is extracted from the
  uploaded archives/textures at your BBS. It will add the date and time
  of the file_id.diz to this description in the following way:
            :             DIZ-TOOL V2.0              :
            [01/01]    [01/21/96]
            [ @X93Diz-Tool: 21.01.1996 - 02:00:00@X92 ] <------ one line
                                                                added.
            12    3456789012345678901234567890123    45
                         1         2         3          characters.
  DIZ-Tool.exe works relative fast.  It operates via  a file_id.swp. The
  program needs to have  the path where the file_id.diz is stored as pa-
  rameter, e.g. diz-tool.exe  c:\bbs\pce\filedir9\playpen.  The path can
  also be  a variable in  the batchfile,  so you can  install it in your
  extdiz.bat as diz-tool.exe %2  after that you have extracted the file_
  id.diz from the uploaded file; [-mANsON!] provides you with an example
  extdiz.bat. The command "diztool.exe %2", however,  also could be exe-
  cuted for  other programs and not just for the .zip archives.  Install
  it at the end of your batchfile, e.g.:
  --- System.bat -------------------------------------------------------
  @Echo off
  If Exist %2%file_id.diz Del %2%file_id.diz
  Goto %3
  Goto QUIT
  :ARJ
  arj x %1 %2 file_id.diz
  Goto QUIT
  :ZIP
  pkunzip %1 %2 file_id.diz
  Goto QUIT
  :DMS
  DMSStrip.exe %1
  DMS-LAB.exe %1 -nocheck -notext -banner c:\bbs\xtreme.bbs
  tfid %1 %2
  Goto QUIT
  :QUIT
  diz-tool.exe %2
  --- End --------------------------------------------------------------
  Next time,  please deliver  a documentation for your tool, I get ques-
  tions from users that don't know what it does and don't want to execu-
  te an .exe file just like that (I don't want to do it either).
   Conclusion:
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Small and working file_id.diz date & time adder.

  `--------------------------------------------------------------------'
  tRIFOX (GPS) released a tool on april 30 1995. It was a move door. You
  could move files from one conference to another conference, including
  the file_id.diz. In PC/X-Magazine, we requested a file mover and tRI-
  FOX wrote a message to us (see above), so that is why we are testing
  this file mover for you.

  This tool needs to have a special directory (...\gpstoolz\gps_move\).
  It always searches in the conference (and area) where it has been ac-
  tivated the very first time. If you are e.g. in conference 3 and want
  to search for e.g. cttt105d.zip, the program searches in conference
  13. After that, it returns to that conference but writes that it's in
  conference 3. Remember that the above written are the results of our
  testing. It can be that we are not 100% correct and that the tool does
  work better. If it does, please report it to us!

  There is a shareware delay, you'll have to wait 30 seconds before the
  user can go on with his/her activities.

  Next, some small remarks on the output:

is this really necessary for all the other SysOp's that want to install
a file mover?: ------.
