                This is one way to become invinsible:
                to simply become a small part of the night
                   moving with the winds and shadows
                   doing what must be done
                   completely void of emotions
                   so that no one's mind can feel you

  PC/X-Magazine is free for everyone and spreading is encouraged. If you
  want to have a printed copy of the current issue (or from prior
  issues), call our BBS and post a message to us so we can work some-
  thing out.

  We will try to make this a very interesting zine with all kinds of in-
  formation that's usefull for almost anyone running PC-Express. Besides
  this textfile we incorporate much more in the archives that we make
  such as a list of all the BBS's in the world that are using PC-Express
  (registered and unregistered), a source file for an utility that some-
  one has coded (and one that works :-)), some ANSI- & ASCII-texts, a
  vote sheet etc.

  In the magazine itself we'll try to hold on to the following contents:

  a) General information,
  b) What's in the archive that you've got (downloaded),
  c) Editorial section,
  d) Offered information,
  e) New things, bugs and idea's,
  f) Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's),
  g) Short story (optional),
  h) PC-ExpressNet(c),
  i) Source section (MugSHot),
  j) Tool report,
  k) List with released utilities and idea's for utilities that need
     to be coded,
  l) How to register your copy of PC-Express,
  m) Registrations and changes (November),
  n) All the PC-Express HQ's,
  o) Distributors of this zine,
  p) End notes.

  We'll do much be we can't do it alone; if you have a source-file that
  you want to share with others so that they too can learn to code, if
  you have a textfile with important information, if you have an addi-
  tion to the list with (un-)registered BBS's in your country etc.
  please give it to one the people that is able to incorporate it in the
  next issue of the magazine. We all must try to make this zine interes-
  ting for us all.

  When you want to contact the author with submissions, your vote, com-
  plaints, idea's etc. write a message to one of the above mentioned In-
  ternet addresses, call our BBS or mail us at the following address:

  Then a word about international valid rules concerning PC-Express. We
  think that it is time that some rules are made for the registration of
  the BBS-system PC-Express. Michael and I worked out a small textfile
  in which 5 rules are described. Support sites from all over the world
  should keep these rules in mind and if a person does not hold on to
  these rules he or she will be sanctioned for this. The rules stated in

  -1- I received a letter from Fanfan:

   FF: Hi i am the pce-dist for france...
   FF: i have an special request to you
   FF: can you make an qwk doors (jam compatible) for
   FF: pce V1.3 coz i have 3 network
   FF: on my bbs (fidonet,lif-net & francomedia PCE-NET soon)
   FF: and pce didn't have any qwk doors

   TD: We already started to work on coding a QWK-compatible door,
   TD: let's say an equivalent of the BlueWave mail door, but other
   TD: things had to be coded first so I think that we have to
   TD: wait a while before such a program could be released. Maybe
   TD: other coding groups can make such a program...

   FF: Ok i wait for you answer do you have any ftp site
   FF: where i can find all yours doors productions...
   FF: i no site availlaible can you give me by e-mail attach
   FF:  yours latest doors prod..

   TD: This is a frequently asked question... I don't know any ftp/www
   TD: sites that have tools for pc/x. I hope to establish something
   TD: soon but I can't say what the future has in mind...

   FF:  Thank's in advance
   FF:
   FF: See you later on pce-net
   FF:
   FF:                          Franois

   TD: C U and thanks for your application form!

   I also received a couple of letters from Mr.maniac (M-i-N-D-W-0-r-X
   BBS, Germany), including his votesheet. Thanks!

  We thought that it could be nice if the people that nowadays code on
  PC-Express tools were mentioned in this magazine. There are groups but
  also people that code alone. We will try to give you as much informa-
  tion as possible about these guys (and girls) accordingly to the in-
  formation that they gave us. We also give you some information about
  the amount of releases (read: acitvity) of these people.

  Groups and persons that don't have released a tool for pc/x within two
  months will be removed out of the list.

  /\/ote: Creative? YES! We have approx. thirteen tools that're waiting
          to be released, but I think that everyone is aware of the fact
          that PCEKiT has a bug. Michael said that a friend of his would
          fix this bug, he already has done this once but since MugSHot
          decided to write the whole KiT again and did not take care of
          this solve, the mistake is once again present in the KiT. When
          this friend of Michael has fixed this bug and when we received
          it a whole bunch of tools is going to be released.

:  Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)  \  /  :
`-----------------------------------------------------------------\/-----'

  Q: Will PC-Express be going to support networks like Fidonet in the
     future?

  A: Yes. In PC-Express v1.3 we hope that we have replaced the current
     message-base with JAM-base so that besides our own network other
     mail/file networks like Fidonet can be incorporated too.

  Q: I see many errors occur when I start v1.20demo, for example when
     PC/X asks for the handle and location/group; why is that?

  A: PC-Express v1.20 works with language files. Many users say that the
     language files are not incorporated in the pc/x-archive, but they
     are! Take a look at the archive "pce00000.003". Inside that archive
     are 4 files which form the English language. Place them in your
     textpath (e.g. c:\bbs\node0). Next, take care of the fact that the
     English language is correctly installed in the config.exe. When you
     now start pc/x, you don't see these errors anymore.

  Q: Are there any ftp-sites where we can download pc/x tools?

  A: I don't know any ftp sites that hold tools for pc/x. Maybe in the
     future some big servers could have a directory for these tools and
     one or more newsgroups could be started, but for now almost no in-
     formation concerning pc/x is available on The Internet.
                                                                ______

  Since this is the first time, the textfile "Intrules.pce" - in which
  the international valid rules concerning the registration of the BBS-
  system PC-Express  are stated -  will be printed  in this zine itself;
  you can also find this textfile in the PCE-Magazine archive and in the
  demo - and registered version of PC-Express.

               -* PC-Express international valid rules *-

This document was made on november 30, 1995.

 -1-

 There can be only one (1) PC-Express support site in each country;
 PC-Express support sites have the privilage to register users that
 wants to have a registered PC-Express version. No other BBS's may
 register such users.

 -2-

 The registration-money for obtaining a PC-Express registration for
 life has been set to $ 90 (90 american dollars).

 -3-

 When a person from outside your country wants to register with
 you and that person lives in a country that does not already have
 a PC-Express support site, he or she has to pay $ 90 (90 american
 dollars), and from that $ 90 (90 american dollars) $ 45 (45 ameri-
 can dollars) are for the PC-Express support site (the person that
 is the main SysOp of the support site) and the other $ 45 (45 ame-
 rican dollars) have to go to the coder of PC-Express (see be-
 neath). If a persons lives in a country that does have a support
 site and calls you for registration of PC-Express, the SysOp of
 this support site should redirect him or her to the support site
 in the country where the user lives.

 -4-

 When a person that lives in your country wants to register PC-
 Express, he or she should pay $ 90 (90 american dollars) or an e-
 quivalent of $ 90 (90 american dollars). The half of the regis-
 tration money ( $ 45 (45 american dollars) or an equivalent of
 $ 45 (45 american dollars)) has to go to the coder of PC-Express
 (see beneath), the other half is for the support site.

 -5-

 When a person decides that he or she wants to quit with his or her
 BBS, he or she could transfer his or her registration licence only
 one (1) time to another person. The person that receives the li-
 cence has to pay the half of the registration money. That person
 cannot transfer his or her licence again! The transfer has taken
 place when the recipient has registered PC-Express at the PC-
 Express support site.

  Software
  ~~~~~~~~
  What do you need to run with PC-ExpressNet(c)? The same as for running
  with other networks:  A frontend program like  FrontDoor or DBridge, a
  mailer/tosser like FMail (FMail v0.98 supports JAM-base) and a offline
  mail reader  like BlueWave  (as well as for the BBS  as for the user).
  Most programs require that you run with Fossil instead of UART so take
  the trouble and install i.e. X00.  FrontDoor doesn't support JAM-base.
  For a good maintainance a program like Allfix can be use too.
 A few words from MugSHot:
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 A few days ago I wanted to make a small chatter in TheTag, this way sysops
 could very easily talk to a user while the user was in a file listing.

 The problem was that I could have made a chatter that only worked in TheTag
 but I already knew that if in the future I again needed a chatter I would
 have had to write a whole new chatter again.

 So basicly what I wanted, was a unit to which I could say:
 "Look I want a chat window right there and one here, and if the user presses
 a key I want the char to appear in the above window and if the sysop presses
 a key I want the char to appear in the lower window," etc, etc..

 And a few hours later I had finished the pkWINDOW unit.
 (pkwindow because I will also put it in the PCEKiT package...)

 I now give the source code to Public Domain and I hope it will help you if
 you ever need to program a chatter or a node to node chatter.

 Some specifications:
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 pkWindow uses pointers which allow you, the programmer, to define +16,000
 chat windows with each containing +700 lines.
 The procs to put the text on the screen and to place the cursor are
 definable so you can write your own procs.
 For instance if are using PCEKiT you might want to do this:
 SetGotoXYProc(pkGotoXY);
 SetWriteProc(pkWrite);
 Now the pkWINDOW unit uses pkGotoXY and pkWrite and with that the window
 unit can now be used for async communications.
 List of Functions and Procedures:
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 procedure SetGotoXYProc(NewProc : GotoXYProc);
 - define your own GotoXY procedure.

 procedure SetWriteProc(NewProc : WriteProc);
 - define your own Write procedure.

 function  pkInitWindow(nr : byte; Init : InitRecord) : boolean;
 - initialize a window with the InitRecord and allocate the memory for it.

 function  pkDoneWindow(nr : byte) : boolean;
 - make a window inactive and deallocate it's memory.

 function  pkWindowPutChar(nr : byte; ch : char) : boolean;
 - put a char in the specified window, with wordwrap and clearing the screen
   if full.

 function  pkGetLastPos(nr : byte; var lastx,lasty : byte) : boolean;
 - returns the last position of the specified window.

 function  pkWindowActive(nr : byte) : boolean;
 - returns true if the specified window is active.

 Restriction of pkWINDOW:
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 The only restriction I see right now is that you can't use macros in the
 chat window, for the very simple reason that that hasn't been programmed.
 Which is another reason why I release this source, if anyone wants to
 code a function that scans and enters the macros they can do it themselves
 cause I don't really need that function right now.
 EndNotes:
 ~~~~~~~~
 Ok, that is all I wanted to say, have fun with this piece of intellectual
 work...

  | Short Desc.: New statistics displayer v1.0 |
  `--------------------------------------------------------------------'
  The first tool that I received this month was from (XCaLBuR); he
  has coded a statistics displayer for us in a somewhat different way.
  He used four "sub-menus" (User stats, Activity stats, System stats and
  Informations) which hold almost all the data that a user wishes.

  There is a small documentation accompanying the tool; the coder itself
  says that almost nothing can be adjusted to the ideas of the SysOp.
  Things like options, colours and general layout are fixed and therefor
  cannot be adjusted to the individual BBS-style. Nevertheless the tool
  looks great.

  When the user starts the tool, it takes a few seconds longer then nor-
  mal before the tool displays the data, but that's due to the amount of
  information read and calculated by the tool. Exd-St10.exe also shows
  the users that did not upload anything so far to your BBS.

   Conclusion:
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Nice statistics displayer for the non-self-opinionnated SysOp.
  |  Short Desc.: Realtime Top Downloaders displayer v1.0             |
  `--------------------------------------------------------------------'
  Doc Holiday  (iNFLUENCE) coded a  real time top downloaders displayer.
  When you start the tool,  it calculates the bytes that  the users from
  your BBS had downloaded  and displays the 10 users that downloaded the
  most. It uses an non-adjustable header and a non-adjustable framework;
  also the colours  can't be choosen by the SysOp.  The program displays
  the following: - Handle, - Location, - Bytes donwloaded.
  The program doesn't take care of the fact  that some users are hidden;
  it'll display the stats no matter if they're hidden or not.
  It takes a few seconds before the program has calculated all the data;
  when your userbase holds appr. 300 users,  the calculating takes about
  5 seconds.
  Doc Holiday has written  a sufficient explanation  so that every SysOp
  can install this tool by means of a batchfile or from a bulletin (with
  |!DOORNAME).
  The first entry  (number 1 in the output)  is not correct  when I test
  the tool (over and over).  It states a user  that is present on my BBS
  but has  downloaded  nothing so far (new user).  The program says that
  this user has downloaded over 100 MB and also the location of the user
  is incorrect.
   Conclusion:
    "A good idea with a few mistakes".
  |  Short Desc.: Top Statistics displayer                            |
  `--------------------------------------------------------------------'
  This is a tool that will give you almost every statistic that you wish
  to have for your BBS. (XCaLBuR) has incorporated the following 9
  options into one single tool:  - top callers, - top uploaders (files),
  top  uploaders (bytes),  - top downloaders (files),  - top downloaders
  (bytes),  - top writers, - top receivers,  - top upload cps and  - top
  download cps.  You can activate a specific option  by placing a number
  (1 to 9) after  the normal procedure to start a door,  e.g. Exd-ts.exe
  -n%1 -1 for displaying  the top callers (10) or execute the whole tool
  by Exd-ts.exe -n%1.  Don't forget to extract the archive with the "-d"
  parameter because  the coder made  a subdirectory  called BATS  inside
  EXD-TS20.ZIP with  9 batch-files inside to  ease the installation. You
  can also execute them from  your bulletins by  means of the |!DOORNAME
  command.
  The program doesn't take care of  hidden users.  All users (except for
  the SysOp) are displayed when they are in the top ten.
  The SysOp can't adjust anything;  the framework, the colours, the hea-
  der, all are fixed.
  When viewing the screens seperate  (e.g. Exd-ts.exe -n%1 -7), it takes
  two seconds to  calculate  the data  and displaying it  on the screen.
  This is measured with a database of 305 users. When executing the tool
  itself (Exd-ts.exe -n%1), it takes  nearly two seconds  to display the
  data on the screen.
   Conclusion:
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    An expanded top statistics displayer for the non-self-opinionated
    SysOp.

  `--------------------------------------------------------------------'
  It seems that (XCaLBuR) is very busy coding all those tools :-).
  He also has made a real-time lastcallers tool. These kind of tools are
  getting better and better because the coders more and more know what
  the public wants. This tool is an example of the above: It works fast,
  displays all the necessary information and also keeps track of the ac-
  tivitites of the last three days. In the archive you'll find two pro-
  grams that you can install in your LogOnAll.bat/System.bat, Exd-last.
  exe and update.exe. In this way the tool always displays the correct
  info. There are however a few disadvantages when you use a real-time
  tool like this and that is  that you cannot adjust it  to your wishes;
  the colours, the framework (same as with some other tools from this
  coder) etc. are fixed. A nice option is that (XCaLBuR) has in-
  corporated animated prompts in his tool. They however are always ANSI,
  so I hope that it won't be a problem for ASCII users.

  Nowadays people can choose of out many lastcallers displayers which
  tool fits their demands best.

  CrAzY provides us with an UDLogX.txt cutter that'll delete lines out
  of your logfile that were older then a specific date, which you can
  specify as a parameter when you start the tool. This tool also sear-
  ches for all the UDLogX.txt files that can be found on your BBS when
  you have a multinode board (0-9). I have tested it with a UDLog0.txt
  which is 128 kbytes and the tool has treated this textfile (read and
  write) within one or two seconds. It displays what's is doing on your
  screen. You could easily put this tool in your eventX.bat.

  `--------------------------------------------------------------------'
  (XCaLBuR) provides us with a small user lister. The accompanied
  documentation is very small but what can you say more about this tool?
  Also this time all things are fixed, you can't adjust anything to your
  wishes. The coder uses besides his own colours also his own type of
  writing and you will get to see something like "eNTeR aLoNe ..." and
  this will be in light blue, gray etc. When users have security-level
  10, the coder writes "NOT VALIDATED!" but that's also BBS-dependent.
  At my BBS users with sec. level 10 can be validated also, why should
  I give more access when I don't want to do that? The output of the
  tool will display the handle/name of the user, the location, the date
  they were on your BBS for the last time and the amount of calls. If a
  user has sec. level 10, the last two data are removed and the words
  "NOT VALIDATED!" are written down. After that the tool has finished,
  you'll get to see the total amount of callers that are on your BBS or
  that the tool has written down on the screen (when you did not want to
  display more by pressing "n"). The SysOp of the BBS is also mentioned
  in the list and the data are accompanied by a blue background.

   Conclusion:
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    A totally fixed user lister.
  |  Short Desc.: Last 12 uploaded/downloaded files displayer v2.0    |
  `--------------------------------------------------------------------'
  (XCaLBuR) made a tool that'll display the last 12 uploaded - and
  downloaded files to the user. You can place a parameter after the nor-
  mal door command  so that when the user executes the command he or she
  will get to see the  last 12 uploads or the last 12 downloads. Like in
  the other tools from this coder, all (framework, colours, etc.) is fi-
  xed!  When executing the tool it takes nearly 2 seconds to display the
  data, so that's fast enough.  It does not take care of files that were
  uploaded private. It takes care of hidden users and conference access.
  The last two things also can be installed by means of a parameter that
  you'll have  to enter after the  above mentioned parameters (e.g. exd-
  tran.exe -n%1 -1 -C  for displaying the  last  12 uploads  to the user
  with conference checking).  (XCaLBuR) has made a version that'll
  work with FOSSIL and a version when using UART direct, so don't forget
  to extract this archive with the "-d" option  and also don't forget to
  use the correct one.
   Conclusion:
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Fixed last 12 up/downloads displayer.

  |  Short Desc.: File_Id.diz importer v1.01                          |
  `--------------------------------------------------------------------'
  SPEED (Squad) made (on request of Klipsch) a tool that can make a di-
  rectory for your BBS from the File_Id.diz' that're in a conference
  path of which you want to create the dirX.txt. Imagine that you have
  placed 20 archives in the upload directory of your PC-Express confe-
  rence. You then can execute Dizzer.exe with e.g. the parameters -C3
  and -F9. The tool can't yet append File_Id.diz' to an existing direc-
  tory listing so either you shouldn't have one or you can use the -O
  parameter to overwrite an existing one. I hope that SPEED soon will
  add this feature to this tool. .ZIP archives are handled internally
  and you can specify other archive types in DIZZER.INI that accompanies
  his tool. Dizzer.exe works fast, it can make a dirX.txt with 15 File_
  Id.diz' in less then approx. 1 second (15 .ZIP archives). Everything
  that the tool does it also written down on the screen.

   Conclusion:
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Nice File_Id.diz importer with great potentials for the future.
  |  Short Desc.: Temporary SysOp access & Security Level Check       |
  `--------------------------------------------------------------------'
  MALCOLM X (Rebels) delivers three tools with this archive: SYSAXS.EXE,
  SYSCHECK.EXE and SECCHECK.EXE.  With the first tool  you temporary can
  give a user SysOp access,  the second tool checks  if you haven't for-
  gotten to reset  the level after Logoff  and the last tool  also has a
  security level check function.  When you're using  SECCHECK.EXE you do
  not need to run SYSCHECK.EXE. With SECCHECK.EXE you can check how many
  users have a specific security-level,  e.g. 255.  With SYSAXS.EXE  you
  can give a user  a certain security level  which you can  specify as a
  parameter when executing the door.  SYSAXS.EXE makes  a data file cal-
  led SYSAXS.DAT  so that  no mistakes  can be made  (SECCHECK.EXE  also
  looks  at this file when you use both tools). The execution of SYSAXS.
  EXE can be done via a CTRL-F?.bat door, e.g. CTRL-F2.bat.  Pressing it
  once, the user becomes a SysOp,  pressing it again, he or she gets his
  or her old level back. I found no specific things that I mention about
  these tools, just use them and judge for yourself.
   Conclusion:
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Another way to ease the fact of being a SysOp :-)
