  PC/X-Magazine is free for everyone and spreading is encouraged. If you
  want to have a printed copy of the current issue (or from prior
  issues), call our BBS and post a message to us so we can work some-
  thing out.

  We will try to make this a very interesting zine with all kinds of in-
  formation that's usefull for almost anyone running PC-Express. Besides
  this textfile we incorporate much more in the archives that we make
  such as a list of all the BBS's in the world that are using PC-Express
  (registered and unregistered), a source file for an utility that some-
  one has coded (and one that works :-)), some ANSI- & ASCII-texts, a
  vote sheet etc.

  In the magazine itself we'll try to hold on to the following contents:

  a) General information,
  b) What's in the archive that you've got (downloaded),
  c) News from the author of PC-Express (Michael Feilen),
  d) Editorial section,
  e) Offered information,
  f) New things, bugs and idea's,
  g) Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's),
  h) Short story (optional),
  i) PC-ExpressNet(c),
  j) Source section (MugSHot),
  k) Tool report,
  l) List with released utilities and idea's for utilities that need
     to be coded,
  m) How to register your copy of PC-Express,
  n) List of people that have registered themselves this month,
  o) All the PC-Express HQ's,
  p) Distributors of this zine,
  q) End notes.

  We'll do much be we can't do it alone; if you have a source-file that
  you want to share with others so that they too can learn to code, if
  you have a textfile with important information, if you have an addi-
  tion to the list with (un-)registered BBS's in your country etc.
  please give it to one the people that is able to incorporate it in the
  next issue of the magazine. We all must try to make this zine interes-
  ting for us all.

  When you want to contact the author with submissions, your vote, com-
  plaints, idea's etc. write a message to one of the above mentioned In-
  ternet addresses, call our BBS or mail us at the following address:

  News from the Author (Michael Feilen)

  During the past month, I finished converting the message base. The en-
  tire message base is now 100% compatible to the JAM format. All com-
  mands as well as the screen appearance remain unchanged to the previ-
  ous format meaning that you won't have to get used to a completely new
  handling. I'm currently working on a new GLOBAL MAIL SCAN which will
  be similar to the one used in Ami-Express. PC-Express Version 1.3 will
  contain both the old and the new GLOBAL MAIL SCAN function and, via
  the Config.exe program, you can then choose the one you wish to work
  with. Additionally, we are working on eliminating the 50 files trans-
  fer limit. PC-Express will no longer save flagged files within it's
  RAM-memory but will create a temporary file for these data. This way,
  it is possible to flag and download up to 65.000 files. We are also
  planning on eliminating the file limit for uploads, however, this re-
  quires the re-programming of the entire Z-Modem routing. Since these
  projects are more time consuming than expected, I have not yet mana-
  ged to finish a first beta version, however, hopefully it will be rea-
  dy by the end of the month. At the moment, the major problem with PC-
  Express is it's requirement for memory. With the new JAM-format in the
  message base, additional memory of almost 20 KB is required. Since PC-
  Express already takes up quite a lot of memory and, therefore, often
  causes problems i.e. for ISDN nodes, I am thinking about making the
  internal Z-Modem protocol a separate external program. During initial
  testing, I have discovered that up to 80 KB memory can be freed when
  running the Z-Modem protocol in from a separate external program. I
  will run additional tests over the forthcoming month and I hope to be
  able to tell you some more about this in the next edition of this ma-
  gazine.

  Ciao, Michael

I proudly present you issue 006 of PC/X-Magazine :-). I hope that this
issue will be even greater then issue 005. Did you also happen to notice
that the magazine keeps getting bigger and better? Soon we'll reach the
top and then we must try to stay at this beautifull but dangerous si-
tuation. I decided to change the name of the zine to "PC/X-Magazine" in
order to express the equality and similarity with Ami-Express(tm).

This month I've done my exams and passed (!) so that I will go to the
fourth year of my medical science study. I try to combinate my hobbies
and i'm glad that it seems to work. I hope that I can continue with my
BBS for a long time. We have been very busy this month with some big
tools like TheTag. Michael tries to make PC/X more and more the /X for
the PC and besides that we try to give PC/X more options then /X has so
that's it's certainly worth the trouble of installing PC/X as your Bul-
letin Board System.

I am also planning to put PC/X-Magazine on The Internet; therefor I hope
that I can make a separate directory on servers like etext.archive.umich.edu
and also make a Usenet Newsgroup for PC/X so that almost everyone can
get to know our system in an easy way.

Next, we are going to release a complete Dutch documentation, starting
from PC/X v1.30. I know that many of you continue to use the English
version, but I need to do this for the future. The guys that use PC/X
more quite some time now don't need this thing, but BBS's like PCB also
started this way. And besides, it can't hurt... just something extra...

We are going to start (around the middle of october) with a group called
Creative Team. After being for quite some time only with the three of us
(Pygor, MugSHot and me) we thought that it was time to expand a little
bit. Therefor we're accepting new guys and girls who want to join Crea-
tive team. In case you guys/girls are going to say "and what exactly are
we going to do and in what way?" we have some simple but yet obvious ru-
les. You will find more information about Creative Team in this issue
We hope that we'll have a great group with happy coders :-).

I hear that Michael is doing some great things with the next version of
PC-Express. We have plans to start with testing the version in about a
few weeks. You will get many (and I mean many) extra options in this up-
date as well as improvement of the existings functions. The version num-
ber itself goes from v1.20 to v1.30. This could mean that some great
changes have been made :-).

I hope that I speak the truth when I say that you can have the following
extra things in pc/x v1.30:
- /X-like global mail scan! Michael said that he should make it an op-
  tion in the Config.exe to choose between the current mail scan and the
  new /X-like mail scanning. I know what I'll choose :-)
- CF, Conference Flags (you can already do this in /X) which mean that
  every user can decide for him/herself from which conferences he/she
  would like to scan for mail, see the new files and sent the mail to
  him/her instead of scanning in all conferences, see the new files in
  all conferences
- FS, File Statistics (like in /X) which mean that you can set the ratio
  for a specific user different in each conference, as well as bytes a-
  vailable today! Maybe it could also be an external tool, who knows...
You see, PC/X is growing!

  We thought that it could be nice if the people that nowadays code on
  PC-Express tools were mentioned in this magazine. There are groups but
  also people that code alone. We will try to give you as much informa-
  tion as possible about these guys (and girls) accordingly to the in-
  formation that they gave us. We also give you some information about
  the amount of releases (read: acitvity) of these people.

  Groups and persons that don't have released a tool for pc/x within two
  months will be removed out of the list.

  ToXiC has already left this list due to the fact that they no longer
  exist.

THETAG - PC/X FILE-TAGGER/SCANNER FOR PC/X v1.20+
-------------------------------------------------
X-TReMe BBS. We are working hard on TheTag. We think that it'll be re-
leased this month. A few options have to be build in like the filename
scan when executing the "z"-command and things like for example "n s g",
but most things are already programmed. TheTag will be a replacement for
"f" (with all parameters like "f u", "f 3"),  "fr", "n" (and all parame-
ters like "n s u", "n s a" etc.), "a" and "z". The users will be able to
choose how they want to tag the files, by means of the cursor-keys or by
means of entering numbers. We will also process the global file scan at
LogOn and the users will be able to view archive files (this also means
that TheTag will be a replacement for the "y"-command). If you want to
see just how far we are with this program, give us a call.

  Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

  Q: Will PC-Express be going to support networks like Fidonet in the
     future?

  A: Yes. In PC-Express v1.3 we hope that we have replaced the current
     message-base with JAM-base so that besides our own network other
     mail/file networks like Fidonet can be incorporated too.

  Q: I see many errors occur when I start v1.20demo, for example when
     PC/X asks for the handle and location/group; why is that?

  A: PC-Express v1.20 works with language files. Many users say that the
     language files are not incorporated in the pc/x-archive, but they
     are! Take a look at the archive "pce00000.003". Inside that archive
     are 4 files which form the English language. Place them in your
     textpath (e.g. c:\bbs\node0). Next, take care of the fact that the
     English language is correctly installed in the config.exe. When you
     now start pc/x, you don't see these errors anymore.

                    Devoted to code quality PC/X tools.

You already could read it in the above, there's a new group coming up to
deliver quality pc/x tools! In The Netherlands GOD HiMSELF!, MugSHot,
Pygor and The Doctor are uniting to form Creative Team, a team that'll
produce new and stable programs. When you want to join our group, go for
it! Post a message to one of the members and we then will work out fur-
ther details. Our group has a few guidelines (rules?) that I would like
to make clear in this short story:

  Everyone is equal; there is *no* rank in our group (only a team coun-
   cil),

  The sources of the tools that you code are also for helping other
   members of our group, especially when they have problems (social as-
   pect),

  If you are coding for Creative Team, you can't also code for another
   group,

  Our group only programs tools for pc/x, no tools are coded for other
   BBS-systems,

  All the tools are released by the organizers (only RELEASED, nothing
   else), not by the individual members; in this way there'll be some
   unity. The releases take place at the pc/x DHQ.

That's it! So if you want to join a new, creative group: Call us!

  Software
  ~~~~~~~~
  What do you need to run with PC-ExpressNet(c)? The same as for running
  with other networks:  A frontend program like  FrontDoor or DBridge, a
  mailer/tosser like FMail (FMail v0.98 supports JAM-base) and a offline
  mail reader  like BlueWave  (as well as for the BBS  as for the user).
  Most programs require that you run with Fossil instead of UART so take
  the trouble and install i.e. X00.  FrontDoor doesn't support JAM-base.
  For a good maintainance a program like Allfix can be use too.
How  to trap errors from your programs explained by MugSHot, released as PD
for Pc-Express Magzine Issue #6.
The idea is quite simple. Instead of trying to trap all kinds of errors, we
can let TP to do the job for us. Whenever TP stops execution of the program
(because of a run time error or just because the program stops in a natural
way) it executes the default procedure of exit : ExitProc.   Then TP checks
the status of two variables from  the SYSTEM unit : ErrorAddr and ExitCode.
If  there was a run   time  error  then   ErrorAddr is not NIL and ExitCode
containes the run time  error code. Otherwise ExitCode containes the error-
level  that  will be  set  for  DOS and  ErrorAddr  is  NIL.
Fortunatly  we can easily  redefine the ExitProc, and  thus to overtake the
control from  TP. The problem  is that  we got to be able to get back or to
jump  to  any point  of  the program  ( even to  jump inside  a procedure /
function). And  that is where the jump unit comes in handy, the routines of
the jump unit came from turbo professional.
The trapping works fine under Windows/Dos. To run it with WINDOWS recompile
the JUMP unit for Windows target. Then add WinCrt to the Uses statement and
remove Mark/Release lines ( because there is no Mark/Release for Windows ).
I have put some english comments in this source and the error message is in
DUTCH but that shouldn't stop you. I also added a nice  (atleast i think it
is) small screen with movin crap. Perhaps you can learn a  little something
from that as well... that's it for me so have fun  with these cool sources!
  `--------------------------------------------------------------------'
  DOC HOLiDAY  is getting  better and better  each time.  He has coded a
  last 15 callers displayer for PCE v1.20+ which we tested:
  Nice layout! /X-like with a few other options.
  For the second time I'll give you  the exact data for the release.nfo:
  "The Doctor", "X-TReMe BBS". Please type it good this time.
  The ANSI- & ASCII-files are external so YOU can edit them.
  The documentation is sufficient but you say that "-N%1" will be repla-
  ced by the node number; that is not correct: "%1" is replaced.
  The tool does NOT works correct is ASCII mode
  You can enter the path where the files are stored, the CPS-replacement
  when local uploads,  the CPS-replacement  when connecting with  an un-
  known baudrate and five lines which will be displayed when the tool is
  executed, all together in a configuration-file.
  I personally think  that you display your name too long.  Now it looks
  like we first have to  register with you  before the tool  fully works
  :-)
  Files that are uploaded private are not counted (files and bytes).
  The tool  only displays the  statistics for the  current day,  not for
  i.e. yesterday or i.e. total calls to the system.
   Conclusion:
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Nice! last 15 callers displayer for PCE v1.20+, /X-layout.

  GOD HiMSELF has made two tools for you, a top uploaders and a top
  downloaders. The top 10 will be displayed. Here are the results:

  Good documentation (as always :-) for the tools.

  The program does NOT output ASCII files, only ANSI. Why can't you im-
  plement this?

  The are .ini files in which you can define the colours to use for the
  output screen.

  The following things are stated in the output screen: -handle, -loca-
  tion, -bytes uploaded, -files uploaded, -calls, -up/down ratio, -maxi-
  mum CPS.

  You can't use a self definable header/footer and you can't edit the
  ANSI files, they are implemented in the .exe.

   Conclusion:
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Good looking tools, certainly worth trying.
  |  Short Desc.: Baud Info v1.0 - Display baudrate                   |
  `--------------------------------------------------------------------'
  XCaLBuR (Swiss PC-Express Support Center)  has made a tool that dis-
  plays  the baudrate  of the connection  to the user.  There is a short
  .doc file (460 bytes) accompanying the tool (BaudInf.exe), but all you
  need to know is mentioned in this text  (maybe one thing isn't mentio-
  ned: The fact that you'll have to execute it  with the parameter -n%1,
  where %1 will be replaced by the Node-number).
  When you execute the program, you'll get to see different prompts that
  ask the user to press  <enter>.  These prompts are  build-in features,
  you can't edit, add or remove them.
  When the user presses <enter> the screen is NOT cleaned, the text (and
  a part of the <enter> prompt stay on the screen.
  On the screen  of the SysOp the font is  NOT correct (the last line is
  missing).
  Next, what's the use of this tool. Personally I think that it's can be
  a nice feature but besides that it's completely useless!
   Conclusion:
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    An extra feature for your BBS but besides that useless.
