  +--------------------------------------------------------------------+

  PCE-Magazine is free for everyone and spreading is encouraged. If you
  want to have a printed copy of the current issue (or from prior
  issues), call our BBS and post a message to us so we can work some-
  thing out.

  We will try to make this a very interesting zine with all kinds of in-
  formation that's usefull for almost anyone running PC-Express. Besides
  this textfile we incorporate much more in the archives that we make
  such as a list of all the BBS's in the world that are using PC-Express
  (registered and unregistered), a source file for an utility that some-
  one has coded (and one that works :-)), some ANSI- & ASCII-texts, a
  vote sheet etc.

  In the magazine itself we'll try to hold on to the following contents:

  a) General information,
  b) What's in the archive that you've got (downloaded),
  c) News from the author of PC-Express (Michael Feilen),
  d) Editorial section,
  e) Offered information,
  f) New things, bugs, idea's,
  g) FAQ's (a growing part),
  h) Short story (optional),
  i) PC-ExpressNet(c),
  j) Source section (MugSHot),
  k) Tool report I (Excalibur),
  l) Tool report II,
  m) List with released utilities and idea's for utilities that need
     to be coded,
  n) How to register your copy of PC-Express,
  o) List of people that have registered themselves this month,
  p) All the PC-Express HQ's,
  q) Distributors of this zine,
  r) End notes.

  We'll do much be we can't do it alone; if you have a source-file that
  you want to share with others so that they too can learn to code, if
  you have a textfile with important information, if you have an addi-
  tion to the list with (un-)registered BBS's in your country etc.
  please give it to one the people that is able to incorporate it in the
  next issue of the magazine. We all must try to make this zine interes-
  ting for us all.

  When you want to contact the author with submissions, your vote, com-
  plaints, idea's etc. write a message to one of the above mentioned In-
  ternet addresses, call our BBS or mail us at the following address:

  News from the Author (Michael Feilen)

  Hi users,

  There's not too much to report this month since PCE V1.2 was in it's
  final beta phase and the pertaining documentation was updated during
  this time.
  The final beta phase went pretty good. Aside from a few smaller bugs
  which could be fixed easily there were no major problems. Only the
  message base, however, seems to show a sharing error from time to time
  and, therefore, the major concern for version V1.3 will be to comple-
  tely work over the message base or to even write an entirely new one.
  I have also decided to change the format of the message base so that
  it becomes compatible to JAM and enables correct fidomail transfers.
  Version 1.2 will finally be released on 1st of August, after two
  months of beta testing. All registered users will automatically re-
  ceive a free-of-charge update (V1.19 to V1.2) from their local support
  centers. This new version additionally includes a new key-system,
  meaning that all registered users will receive a new key together with
  their update.
  Please send a mail  with your BBS-data (SYSOP-Name & BBS-Name) to your
  local support center, so that they can quickly generate your new key.
  That's it, so far. Enjoy your new version of PC-Express!!

  MICHAEL

  I have received a message from DOC HOLiDAY which I will display be-
  neath:

  Well, your article about the PCENET was really great and I'm very in-
  terested in becoming a node. But there is something unclear. You said
  that PCE V1.30 will support the jam/hudson msgbase but at the moment
  pce supports the conferences format. If we will add more than 20 dif-
  ferent areas for the NET, we have to display them all on the 'j' com-
  mand. I think that this will look 'pretty good'. If the user selects
  'j' and is shown an ansi header with a scrolling page of file- and
  msgareas. Uhhhh! See what I mean? It should be possible to choose be-
  tween MSG and FILE Areas. Like this...

  If you choose the 'j' command the screen should be deleted and one
  question should appear like this one.....

  'Do you want to see the (F)iledirs or the (M)essagebase?'

  If 'M' is pressed there has to be a screen where you can change the
  different nets, i.e. FIDO, PCENET, INTERNET, ETC.!

  ---------------

  I see what you mean, but at the moment it is hard to tell how exactly
  it will be done. We are first focussing on 1) PC-ExpressNet(c) and 2)
  JAM/Hudson support. When we have these under control we'll think about
  HOW to implement the different mail/file-networks into PC-Express.

  It has come to my knowledge that many people are STILL having trouble
  to install different protocols into their BBS's. Why? Maybe because it
  is too much trouble, maybe they just don't get it. Therefor I'll give
  you working batchfiles of the most used protocols so that you can in-
  stall them very quickly and run your BBS with 3,4 or even more proto-
  cols.

  There are two people that lose oneself in these protocols, Papa Driel!
  and xCaLBuR. I have asked Papa Driel! to write a part of this zine,
  which he did and with gr8 succes! I have translated it into English.

  %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
  <beginning of the text written by Papa Driel!>
  %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

  The lines with: If exists %dszlog%.. after the DSZ-Tolk can be deleted
  because DSZ-Tolk automatically deletes this %dszlog%-file afterwards,
  but you don't have to do it if you want to be shure (it doesn't hurt).

  The batchfiles of Bi-directional protocols (HydraCom, HS/Link and Bi-
  Modem) can be reduced to ONE batchfile. This also works 100% and it
  reduces the work when you want to change something to your modem or
  BBS. I also use this and it works PERFECT.

  This is an often made mistake: One locks a comport to a specific baud-
  rate and type a different speed in the syntax of such a protocol. If
  you (i.e. with a  FOSSIL-driver) lock your comport at 57600, don't use
  38400 in your batchfiles. Sometimes it can't hurt, but often this is
  responsible for unwanted results.

  .----------------------------------------------------------------.
  : Example batchfile of the Up- and Download protocol for HS-Link :
  :.---------------------------------------------------------------:---.
  `----------------------------------------------------------------'

  @Echo off
  cd\BBS
  if exist %dszlog% del %dszlog% >nul
  HSLINK -P2 -@HSLINK.CFG -NG -NOc:\bbs\lock%1 @c:\bbs\pcesend.%1 -U%3
  DSZ-TOLK.exe %1 h H

  .--------------.
  : Explanation: :
  `--------------'

  -P2 = Comport 2
  -@HSLINK.CFG is the configuration file for HS-Link
  -NOc:\bbs\lock%1 is for dupechecking; it will e.g. check the file
   LOCK%1=LOCK0 for node0. Lock0 is the name of a ASCII-textfile cont-
   taining the names of your sub-directories which contain the files
   which have to be checked! It's just like this:

   C:\FILES\NEW\1\
   C:\FILES\REQ\1\
   C:\FILES\SYS\1\

  It contains the file-directories you want to check for Dupes.
  -U%3 is the upload dir supplied by pcexpress
  %1=NodeNumber %2=ConfNr %3=Upload Directory

  .--------------------------------------------------------------.
  : Example batchfile of the Up- and Download protocol for Hydra :
  :.-------------------------------------------------------------:-----.
  `--------------------------------------------------------------'

  @Echo off
  cd \bbs
  If exist %dszlog% del %dszlog% >nul
  HydraCom port 2 speed 57600 receive %3 send @PCESEND.%1
  DSZ-TOLK.exe %1 h H

  .--------------.
  : Explanation: :
  `--------------'

  %1=NODENUMBER %2=CONFNR %3=UPLOAD DIRECTORY (sent by PCE!)

  .---------------------------------------------.
  : Example batchfile for the Bi-Modem protocol :
  :.--------------------------------------------:----------------------.
  `---------------------------------------------'

  My batchfile for Bi-Modem works perfect as long as the Bi-Modem files
  are in your path and you execute Bi-Modem from an empty directory. Bi-
  Modem has the advantage that you can add files to your uploads (during
  the transfer by pressing <page up>). Normally downloads can too (by
  pressing <page down in Bi-Modem) but if you execute Bi-Modem from an
  empty directory this can't be done anymore because Bi-Modem expects
  the downloaded files in the sub-directory where you execute Bi-Modem.
  I know a way to permit these downloads if the files come from a speci-
  fic conference, i.e. with a CTL-file, but then the authorisation can
  play it's part so I leave (for now) like this:

  @Echo off
  Cls
  Cd C:\BBS\BI\NIX
  C:\BBS\BI\BIMODEM /B57600 /L1 /R %3. /U @C:\BBS\PCESEND.%1
  C:
  Cd C:\BBS
  DSZ-TOLK 0 b B 6000 3000

  .---------------------------------------------------------------.
  : Example batchfile of the Up- and Download protocol for Zyrion :
  :.--------------------------------------------------------------:----.
  `---------------------------------------------------------------'

  This protocol is FAST! Unfortunality it isn't a bi-directional proto-
  col, but if you want to up- or download big files, this protocol is
  THE way to do it. 3750 CPS with a standard 28k8 is normal!

  It is wise to put these three "Set"-lines in the batchfile with which
  you execute PC-Express (Start.bat or something like that); this is to
  avoid errors. You can also put the amount of memory for this in your
  RAM high enough (in your config.sys with "Shell=...."). Besides, a va-
  riable like LOCK_COM1 becomes LOCK_COM2 if you have your modem on com-
  port two!

  .------------------------------------------------------------.
  : Example batchfile of the Up- and Download protocol for GSZ :
  :.-----------------------------------------------------------:-------.
  `------------------------------------------------------------'

  ZModem is still the most used protocol. You can have better results
  with GSZ then with Internal-Z-Modem in PC-Express, for shure when you
  activate "Moby Turbo". 3500 CPS with a normal 28k8 is normal. The syn-
  tax that I use for GSZ is based on the shareware-version. In this ver-
  sion you can't give names for sub-directories where the downloads will
  be placed (when somebody uploads). I use a tool for this (acd). The
  DOS-command "cd" can't jump to another diskdrive and make that drive
  active, acd can (as in tdr-gsz3.zip). If you have registered your ver-
  sion the syntax can be different, but I already have acd and so I keep
  using it because I also want to use the newest version of GSZ without
  changing the batchfiles each time. The option "Moby Turbo" can be ac-
  tivated by the parameter "-mrr", comes in handy in "SEND.bat" and "US.
  bat" (because the one from v1.19 doesn't work 100%).

  : DOC HOLiDAY :
  :.------------:------------------------------------------------------.
  `-------------'

  This story has nothing to do with pce but is very interesting. I think
  that many of you (particularly the german folks) know the german
  lawyer called 'Freiherr Guenther von Gravenreuth'. His clients are all
  the software companies like MS or smaller ones and he is ordered to
  hunt the software pirates.

  This happens to a guy i know:
  I will name him ABC (coz i think that all of you are able to read the
  three letters, hehe!). He is still a pupil but owns a CD-writer. Well,
  in school a young pupil told him that he has heared about the writer
  and asked if ABC could burn some of his original programs to a CD. ABC
  agreed and the young pupil (aged 16-18) went to a software store where
  he borrowed software for some marks. Then he went to ABC and both
  burnt the programs to the CD. But unfortunatly the young boy found a
  CD with many *.ZIP files (you all know those CDs which are sold by
  some groups) and asked ABC if he could give him a copy of this CD.
  First ABC denied but his 'friend' offered some money and ABC agreed.
  Some weeks later ABC received a letter from Mr. Gravenreuth. He had to
  pay 8000 german marks (more than $4500) as punishment for his illegal
  activities. The young pupil from school supported Gravenreuth!

  [UART & FOSSIL]

  Please Check your Doors for Both FOSSIL and UART because much doors
  don't run with Uart and thats realy boring! i Know much sysops run the
  board on Fossils (ISDN), ok thats Nice but Many are running under Di-
  rect Uart for more Speed with the Modem, so Please Check it for both!
  and i think if you use MUGSHOTS PCEKIT this should not be a great
  Problem!

  [BULLETINS]

  From now on! all Bulletins should Be Realtime! Because if you Install
  this Realtime Bulletins with the |!DOORNAME Command direct into the
  Bull1.asc/ans its better than Copy all this Files around!! or? i think
  all Sysops will thank you if you do that and Btw. you can Create some
  nicer Bulletins this Way!

  [DOORS]

  All Doors with Selectable Options should support Cursor Functions

  Please! don't use Special Directory Names like "GPSTOOLZ" or "TOXIC"!!
  Why? simple because sombody can have "TOXIC" as Conference (Toxic-net)
  So please Use \DOORS\GPSTOOLZ or \DOORS\TOXIC so all door Related
  stuff is in the Doors Directory! and if the Sysop copy all Doors there
  and executes from there the BBS is much cleaner or?! If all! Doors use
  this System in Future all is ok! Thanks!

  Doors should not be Packed with Pklite, Lzexe, Diet or so The reason
  is simple! if not packed the Sysop can Check the Door for Backdoors
  and! the Other Problem is that some Packers are not! Compatible Some-
  times a Door or Tool Crash only because the Packer! (Protect X.X,
  Diet, Tinyprog) can Crash Systems! (Lzexe) Crash sometimes! The Best
  Choice is Pklite 1.15 Never crashed!

  New things / Bugs / Idea's

  // Short explanation:  New things, bugs and idea's are written random;
  the name of the person discovered it out is written between hooks //

  - Well, if you have CDROMs online you have to place the dir files in
    the conf dirs. That's okay, but if the Dirx.txt files are too long
    (too many bytes) they will be displayed very slowly. That's not so
    good coz pce needs more than 2 seconds for each line displayed to
    the user. I told that to Michael but I think he didn't fix that. He
    told something about an index file which pce offers in the next ver-
    sion but I need a fix as soon as possible coz i burnt all my data on
    cd (DOC HOLiDAY),

  - I still have problems with my last conference. When I type: "J x"
    (where "x" stands for the last conference) PC-Express jumps the
    first time to conference 1. I have tried to move this conference
    many times but PC-Express keeps making the same mistake. Ofcourse
    the mistakes lies with me, but I have checked and tested many times
    and everything seems to work 100%. Does the author of PC-Express al-
    ready know an answer for this problem because it's driving me crazy!
    (Papa Driel!),

  - Why is the internal-z-modem always used when using "ds" or download-
    ing a file attached to a message? Why can't the protocol be used
    that the user has selected? On Amiga-BBS's it can, so it also has to
    be possible with PC-Express (Papa Driel!),

  - Why does the filetagger in PC-Express v1.20 work with <space> and
    the cursor-keys? When using numbers, it works much faster and easier
    then pressing "f", "<enter>", browsing with cursorkeys and pressing
    <space>. This looks user-friendly but I think that it ISN'T! Spider
    had made such a beautifull tool for PC-Express v1.16 (tears are in
    my eyes :-), so I think that for such a "programming-animal" as Mug-
    SHot it shouldn't be that hard to make a version for v1.20 (Papa
    Driel!),

  - Can't something be done when it comes to the bulletins? Now you have
    to copy the bulletins (which ofcourse can be the same) to each BUL-
    LETIN-directory in each conference if you want to let the user view
    bulletins in each conference. That's a bit foolish and we don't like
    that. It would be nice if there was an option that says if the bul-
    letin could be located in one or in all conferences (Papa Driel!),

  - On Amiga-BBS's (Tempest, Ami/X) the filelisting are much more co-
    lourfull (more then four colours)! Could the also be done with PC-
    Express? The more colours there are, the more joy I have :-) (Papa
    Driel!),

  - On Amiga-BBS's like Tempest you can see how many times a file is
    downloaded. This also is a nice option for PC-Express. In this way
    you can see what files are wanted and what aren't (Papa Driel!),

  - Tried to fit my DSZ-TOLK so that the user could see what the last
    transfer did to the users account. Therefor I used MugSHot's PCE-KIT
    but the user got nothing to see. When I installed DSZ-TOLK as a door
    (with a fake %dszlog%) it went good! Can't something be adjusted? I
    think that you probably know WHAT (Papa Driel!),

  - When pressing "v" and entering "con"+<enter> the system hangs! (The
    Doctor).

 First of all I must make something clear for certain people because I
think that they don't understand quite well what PC-ExpressNet(c) exact-
ly means. PC-ExpressNet(c) has NOTHING to do with The Internet and does
NOT cost you much extra money! It is between BBS's only, you'll have to
call your HUB or HOST (in general: Someone at the upper end of the tree)
to receive and deliver your mail (and files). Nodes can do this once or
twice a week (maybe more if you like it and/or if you want a quicker an-
swer). HUB's and HOSTS have to call every day in order to achieve a con-
tinous mail/file flow. We will take care that your calls will be local,
so that your costs are minimal.

 In this part of PC-ExpressNet(c) we must decide if the areas are or
aren't going to be moderated and if they are, who is going to be that
moderator for one or for more areas. Let us make an overview:

 Q: How can one hide (or unhide) a directory using a TP program?

 A: Here is the code using interrupt programming.

(* Hide a directory. Before using it would be nice to check
   that the directory exists, and that it is a directory.
   With a contribution from Jan Nielsen jak@hdc.hha.dk
   Based on information from Duncan (1986), p. 410 *)

procedure HIDE (dirname : string);
var regs : registers;
begin
  FillChar (regs, SizeOf(regs), 0);  { standard precaution }
  dirname := dirname + #0;           { requires ASCII strings }
  regs.ah := $43;                    { function }
  regs.al := $01;                    { subfunction }
  regs.ds := Seg(dirname[1]);        { point to the name }
  regs.dx := Ofs(dirname[1]);
  regs.cx := 2; { set bit 1 on }     { to unhide set regs.cx := 0 }
  Intr ($21, regs);                  { call the interrupt }
  if regs.Flags and FCarry <> 0 then { were we successful }
    writeln ('Failed to hide');
end;  (* hide *)

 A2: An alternative method by Dr. Abimbola Olowofoyeku
     laa12@seq1.keele.ac.uk. No paths.

  procedure HIDE (dirname : string);
  var FileInfo : searchRec;
      f        : file;
  begin
    FindFirst (dirname, Directory, FileInfo);
    while DosError = 0 do
      begin
        assign (f, FileInfo.Name);
        SetFAttr (f, Hidden);
        FindNext (FileInfo);
      end;
  end;  (* hide *)
  {}
  procedure UNHIDE (dirname : string);
  var FileInfo : searchRec;
      f        : file;
  begin
    FindFirst (dirname, AnyFile, FileInfo);
    while DosError = 0 do
      begin
        assign (f, FileInfo.Name);
        SetFAttr (f, Archive);
        FindNext (FileInfo);
      end;
  end;  (* unhide *)

 ---

 Q: How does one store, and then restore the original screen?

 A: Here is a simple outline for storing and restoring a text mode
    screen. Note that the code below is incomplete in a sense that it
    works for a color monitor only, because the monochrome screen
    address is $B000:$0000.

    For storing and restoring the graphics screen see Ohlsen & Stoker
    (1989), Turbo Pascal Advanced Techniques, Que, pp 333-337.

  uses Crt;

  type ScreenType = array [1..4000] of byte;        (* 2 x 80 x 25 *)

  var ColorScreen : ScreenType Absolute $B800:$0000;
      SavedScreen : ScreenType;
      posx, posy : byte;

  begin
    SavedScreen := ColorScreen; (* Save the screen *)
    posx := WhereX; posy := WhereY; (* Save the cursor position *)
    writeln ('A simple demo storing and restoring the color text screen');
    writeln ('By Prof. Timo Salmi, ts@uwasa.fi');
    writeln; write ('Press <-'''); readln;
    ColorScreen := SavedScreen; (* Restore the screen *)
    GotoXY(posx,posy); (* Go to the stored cursor position *)
  end.

  If you wish to test for the monitor type, that is choose
  between $B800:$0000 and $B000:$0000 bases, you can use
  pkMono from pkmisc.tpu, included in pcekit.

 Q: I don't want the Break key to be able to interrupt my TP
     programs. How is this done?

 Q2: I want to be able to capture the Break key in my TP program.
     How is this done?

 Q3: How do I detect if a certain key has been pressed?

 A: This very frequently asked question is basically a case of RTFM
    (read the f*ing manual). But this feature is, admittedly, not very
    prominently displayed in the Turbo Pascal reference.
    There is a CheckBreak variable in the Crt unit, which is true by
    default. To turn if off use

     uses Crt;
     :
     CheckBreak := false;
     :
     Besides turning off break checking this enables you to capture the
     pressing of the break key as you would capture pressing ctrl-c. In
     other words you can use e.g.
     :
procedure TEST;
var key : char;
begin
  repeat
    if KeyPressed then
      begin
        key := ReadKey;
        case key of
          #3 : begin writeln ('Break'); exit; end;  {ctrl-c or break}
          else write (ord(key), ' ');
        end; {case}
      end; {if}
  until false;
end;  (* test *)
     :
  IMPORTANT: Don't test the ctrl-break feature just from within the TP
  IDE, because it has ctlr-break handler ("intercepter") of its own
  and may confuse you into thinking that ctrl-break cannot be
  trapped by the method given above.

  This is, however, not all there can be to break checking, since
  the capturing is possible only at input time. It is also possible to
  write a break handler to interrupt a TP program at any time.
  This is also what pcekit uses when looking at the new functions like
  pkbreakoff, pkCADoff etc etc, download PCEKIT26.ZIP to get hold of
  these functions.

  Q: How do I execute an MsDos command from within a TP program?

  A: The best way to answer this question is to give an example.

     {$M 2048, 0, 0}   (* <-- Important *)
     program outside;
     uses dos;
     begin
       write ('Directory call from within TP by Timo Salmi');
       SwapVectors;
       Exec (GetEnv('comspec'), '/c dir *.*');  (* Execution *)
       SwapVectors;
       (* Testing for errors is recommended *)
       if DosError <> 0 then
         writeln ('Dos error number ', DosError)
       else
         writeln ('Mission accomplished, exit code ', DosExitCode);
       (* For DosError and DosExitCode details see the TP manual *)
     end.

 ---

 Q: How can I clear the keyboard type-ahead buffer?

 A: Three methods are usually suggested for solving this problem.

    a) The first is to use something like
     uses Crt;

     var dummy : char;

     while KeyPressed do dummy := ReadKey;

    This kludge-type method has the disadvantage of requiring the Crt
    unit. Also, in connection with procedures relying on ReadKey for
    input, it may cause havoc on the programs logic.

    b) The second method accesses directly the circular keyboard buffer

     var head : word absolute $0040:$001A;
         tail : word absolute $0040:$001C;

     procedure FLUSHKB; begin head := tail; end;

     For a slightly different formulation of the same method see Michael
     Ticher (1992), PC Intern System Programming, p. 462.

   c) The third method is to call interrupt 21Hex (the MsDos interrupt)
      with the ax register set as $0C00. This method has the advantage of
      not being "hard-coded" like the second method, and thus should be
      less prone to incompatibility.

 Q: How do I test whether a file is already open in a TP program?

 A: This question is best answered by providing the code:

  uses Dos;

  {... for non-text files ...}
  function ISFOPEN (var filePointer : file) : boolean;
  begin
    isfopen := FileRec(filePointer).mode <> FmClosed;
  end;
  {}

  {... for text files ...}
  function ISTOPEN (var filePointer : text) : boolean;
  begin
    istopen := TextRec(filePointer).mode <> FmClosed;
  end;
  {}

  procedure TEST;          { Testing a non-text file }

  const name = 'C:\BBS\EXPRESS.CF0';

  var f  : file;
  begin
    Assign (f, name);
    writeln ('File ', name, ' is open is ', ISFOPEN(f));
    {$I-} rewrite (f); {$I+}
    if IOResult <> 0 then
      begin
        writeln ('Failed to open ', name);
        exit;
      end;
    writeln ('File ', name, ' is open is ', ISFOPEN(f));
    close(f);
    writeln ('File ', name, ' is open is ', ISFOPEN(f));
  end;

  `--------------------------------------------------------------------'

  So, we have a new coder for PC-Express: Welcome! We hope that you will
  code many beautifull tools for this BBS-system.

  Next, I want to give you my opinion about the new pager that the above
  person coded:

  After reading the accompanied documentation I decided to install this
  replacement for the "o"-command.

  There is a mistake made in the .nfo and in the batchfile itself: It is
  not: CR-Pager.exe %1 but CR-Pager.exe -n%1, else it won't work!

  The (main) screen looks okay, nothing wrong with that!

  Sometimes the music for the page goes very fast instead of the normal
  mode that has been installed in this tool.

  Write down in the .nfo how the SysOp can answer the page. According
  to Evilive the SysOp can press "ESC" and then hit "F1", so that the
  file CHATSTAR.A* will be displayed (that means that this program ser-
  ves as a kind of front-door), but when someone starts this pager and I
  press <enter> the program says: Paging SysOp has been aborted which is
  correct on one hand but incorrect on the other hand.

  Evilive said that the above mentioned "ESC" + "F1" will be updated in
  the next version of this tool, so that the page can start immediatly.

   Conclusion:
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    + Nice pager (front-tool) with great looking screen,
    - No immediat startup of the page; the SysOp has to press "ESC" and
      then hit "F1"; Evilive said that it will be updated in the next
      version,
    - The music (speed) sometimes gets out of control.
  |  Short Desc.: Request door for PC-Express v1.18+ (v1.50)         |
  `--------------------------------------------------------------------'
  This  time I  have received  a request door (v1.50), made by Trifox. I
  want to give you my observations which I gathered by testing this tool
  with PC-Express v1.20:
  If you  want to deal with requests on your BBS, use this tool! It does
  all  things that  you want a program  to do for  handling  requests of
  users. There are a few SysOp-only functions with which the SysOp's and
  Co-SysOp's can maintain the database and give credits to the uploaders
  of the requested files.
  You have made one tiny little mistake in your header:
  There are quite a few  spelling mistakes made in the tool; please cor-
  rect them as they make the tool less beautifull!
  There are some  guys that I also want  to let handle some uploaded re-
  quests etc. but not all of them have a sec. level > 200. Why don't you
  make this level SysOp selectable or make a configuration file with the
  names of the people that have access to SysOp functions?
  When leaving a  message to the user  that has requested the file some-
  thing goes wrong: You'll get to see the following (for example):
  0Trin' to ....
  Okidoki, message send ...
  I think that  the layout can be MUCH  improved and I  also did NOT re-
  ceive a  message stating  my request had been upload the FIRST TIME.
  Why don't you code a SysOp selectable directory? Why must all GPStools
  be in a pre-defined directory? Only you guys do this, no one else does
  (I hope that I'm correct). Remember that this is just my personal opi-
  nion & I'm not saying that it must be done in order to work properly.
   Conclusion:
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    + Nice request door with many functions (for users and for (Co-)Sys-
      Op's),
    + Good explanation of the functions in the door,
    + From now on this tool is free for everyone (the way it should be),
    - Quite a few spelling bugs,
    - Pre-defined directory, pre-defined sec. level,
    - Mistakes in handling of messages (layout and FIRST message).

  `--------------------------------------------------------------------'

  At this version (v1.34) I decided to test this program of which I get
  many (and I do mean MANY) updates! The coder has decided to put the
  source of this tool in the archive, which I think is great! Not many
  people give other people the change to start in a more relaxed way.

  Quite a few people have problems installing Hydra and/or HSLink into
  their BBS's, but I don't think that it should be that hard. Therefor I
  will add the upload- and download-batches of Hydra and HSLink in the
  archive of PCE-Magazine, so that everyone can use more protocols then
  only Internal-Z-Modem.

  The program checks for a dszX.log (where X stands for the Node-number)
  and converts this text-file to PCETrans.X (X again stands for the
  Node-number). With this file, PC-Express is able to take care of the
  Up- and Downloads to and from the BBS. After the transfer, both dszX.
  log and PCETrans.X are gone. This all goes well when using this tool.

  I am shure that this version already has been updated by the program-
  mer by the time that this report appears in this magazine, but ne-
  vertheless this report can function as a good test-report for this
  program.

   Conclusion:
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    + Fine working tool  that handles the up- and downloads to  and from
      the BBS, so that  the SysOp can install  more protocols  then only
      Internal-Z-Modem.
  |  Short Desc.: Bulletin door for PC-Express v1.19 & v1.20          |
  `--------------------------------------------------------------------'
  A bull-door, nice, let's test  it to see how it can benefit your BBS!:
  This program has a great looking main screen,
  When a  bulletin is longer  then one  screen-length, the program asks:
  Paused. More (Y,n,ns). When you press "Y" (or <enter>) everything goes
  well, but  when pressing "n", the program just stops with all it's ac-
  tivities and returns the user to the BBS-prompt,
  You CAN'T use  the left- and  right-cursorkeys,  so if  you e.g. have:
  [01] Top Uploaders                                [02] Top Downloaders
  you must press <cursor_down> to go to the right,
  The "?"-option  doesn't have a  function, because you can only execute
  it when you're in the main menu and then the list is already there,
  When you press "ns" only once, all the other times the program assumes
  that you pressed "ns" and display's the ansi/ascii at once,
  The hotkeys ONLY work for bulletins 1 until 9; when you have installed
  e.g. bull19.a* and  you press "1", the program  automatically  goes to
  bull1.a* and second, you CAN'T type "19" because only ONE digit is al-
  lowed,
  When you are at the prompt: Paused. More (Y,n,ns) you can enter almost
  all characters that you want. After giving an <enter> the program does
  nothing; after giving  a second <enter> the program prompts you to hit
  <enter> again to continue,
  Some options are hotkeys (like e.g. "Q") and some options aren't (like
  the "Y" at the prompt: Paused. More (Y,n,ns).
   Conclusion:
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    + Nice looking main screen,
    + Cursorkey's and a lightbar are present in this tool,
    - There are a lot a (little) mistakes made.

    We hope that the programmer will correct these problems because this
    tool can be a great help or simply make your BBS more beautifull.

  finished; it stays dark gray,

  The users are in a different order then I am used to see them: The
  first name that I see is NOT the last caller, but now the last caller
  is at te bottom of the list,

  The UpKb and DnKb that are mentioned for each user most times are NOT
  correct (check it out yourself by viewing the Up/Downloaded bytes when
  you start your UserEd.exe).

   Conclusion:
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    + Nice tool, works fast and produces a nice output ANSI,
  `--------------------------------------------------------------------'
  This tool does a great job in moving files from one area in a specific
  conference  to another area in another conference. The layout is good,
  the tool functions well. (Co-)SysOp's can type in the name of the file
  they want to move and when the tool has located that archive, they can
  type in the  target conference and target file-area. There are however
  a few small remarks and one serious remark on this tool:
  When moving an  archive to a target conference, the description is NOT
  added correctly to the DirX.txt; at the  beginning, as well  as at the
  end this tool puts empty lines,
  the date is NOT written correctly after the other data, e.g.:
  DAYADD12.ZIP F 10838   95-07-01
                      ^^^
  No wildcard search, so no multiple files can be moved at one time,
  Some files are  just NOT found, like PCX-RA.ARJ, MATRIX20.ZIP and UB_-
  P2R.ZIP, however they certainly exist in our PCE-conference!.
   Conclusion:
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    This tool is an advantage for your BBS; it moves files in a fine way
    from a source-directory to a target-directory, thereby using the in-
    stalled colours. The tool also has a few bugs of which one is rather
    serious. I think that THe WHiTE KNiGHT certainly will correct these

  I have tested v1.2 of this wall tool made by DOC HOLiDAY; here are the
  results:

  - Great that the SysOp can put the tool where HE/SHE want to put it,
  - Cursor key is too far away at the question: Convert to elite style?,
    something like this: Y/N          _
                            ^^^^^^^^^^
  - The user can't see how it's written down on the wall, because the
    tool exists immediatly,
  - The background is always blue, so when a user chooses color (6), the
    text isn't visible anymore!,
  - Nice main ANSI made for this wall. This main screen is also editable
    by the SysOp,
  - In ASCII-mode, the ASCII-screen is 1 character too big, so the main
    screen doesn't fit and after each line an extra line is added,
  - All texts are editable (nice),
  - You can also type e.g |07 when typing your line: The background

  This is a relative small tool, so I don't have much to say, but never-
  theless there are a few things that I want you to know:

  - this tool works fast. Place it as the last line in your extdiz.bat
    and a single line is created at the end of the file_id.diz from an
    archive,
  - A sentence  like this  is created: -=( file_id.diz - 1995/07/17 )=-,
    which is 32 characters long. Make the data more readable, i.e. July
    17, 1995,
  - It's not DIZEXT.BAT but EXTDIZ.BAT (mistake made in .doc),

   Conclusion:

  lists the last 10 callers on your BBS with much extra information. We
  thought that a review about this tool should not be absent in this
  issue. Here are the results:

  The tool can be executed from any directory. It will search for the
  necessary files and creates ANSI & ASCII output texts (SysOp defina-
  ble),

  When executing, the tool outputs the directory where it stands (slo-
  venliness),

  The output is very nice (both screens),

  The tool makes a textfile in your BBS-directory called Last10ca.dat
  (I did not know that in the first place, it was not mentioned in the
  .nfo or .new that came with this update),

  Checks are made for local baud and hidden users; there is a sorting
  possibility and definable names can be entered (press Last10ca.exe /?
  for information),

  There are colours used that can't be seen by callers with an Amiga-DOS

  Killers are striking back in 1995! Hmm, let's see... here are the re-
  sults from the testing of NewAnn.exe:

  - The .nfo has become much better!; it truely has advantages if you
    if you accompany your coded tools with decent documentations,

  - The tool writes that the message comes from the SysOp; I know that
    you had to choose, but I also think that some SysOp's prefer the
    other way, namely a message from "New User Announcer" itself,

  - The output is pure core-text; this ofcourse can be improven (but
    that's NOT a "must"),

  - Many options can be added to this New User Announcer, it can be ex-
    panded enormously! so let's all wait for the update :-)

  %%%%%%%%%%%%% - Needed stuff - %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

  - DOC HOLiDAY requested:

  Doc Holiday asked if someone could code a NEWFILES creator, like the
  ALLFILES creator, but now making a list with files of the last three
  days (i.e.). An external, menu controlled configuration file for the
  ALLFILES program should be also usefull,

  Does someone know Remote Access V2.02? There is a great filemover/hel-
  per called RAMGR.EXE included. May someone code such a utility? Or add
  new funktions to the filenuker released by the dutch pce site,

  - Nicodemus asked if someone could code a replacement for the "J"-com-
    mand and if the conferences were selectable with the cursor keys,

  - Nicodemus also want to have a "E"-door that shows the users (select-
    able with the  cursor keys) to which the user could leave a message;
    EALL-messages must be incorporated (important),

  - Excalibur requested:

  [DUPES-TXTMAKER]

  Tool that collect ALL Fileentrys from ALL Conferences and Copy it to
  ALL Conferences. I mean add all files to 1! file! In this Way no User
  can Upload Dupes to the System And Support the CD-ROM Feature! and Why
  Not Sort the Filenames in DUPES.TXT so its Easy for the Sysops to Find
  Duplicates in Different Conferences!!

  [DIZZER]

  Tool that Imports File_id.diz From !![ARC,ZIP,ARJ,LHA,RAR,UC2,TXT,
  EXE]!! but not for Extdiz.bat! --> for the Sysops! and Please if you
  code it do it so that the Sysop don't must enter the Dirx.txt! it
  should work like Sysop go into the uldir or so and Executes "Dizzi"
  and the tool search the Dirx.txt in current Directory and Check all
  Unadded Files for File_id.diz and ads them to dirx.txt and don't Check
  dirx.txt,old,bak (all older such tools have this bug!!)

  [WEEKTOP *REALTIME*]

  Realtime Means! put a Door into logonall and that was all! the Door
  then Displays a weektop every Week and if the week is not passed
  nothing! The Door must knos which user has Allready see the weektop
  and which not logicaly not!
