coded (and one that works :-)), some ANSI- & ASCII-texts, a vote sheet
etc.

  In the magazine itself we'll try to hold on to the following contents:

 - General information,
 - What's in the archive that you've got (downloaded),
 - News from the author of PC-Express (Michael Feilen),
 - Letters to the editor,
 - Things that will be present in the new version, bugs that are found
   in the current version, idea's for the new version,
 - Source-section; make your own utilities (MugSHot),

if you have a textfile with important information, if you have an
addition to the list with (un-)registered BBS's in your country etc.
please give it to one the people that is able to incorporate it in
the next issue of the magazine. We all must try to make this zine in-

  News from the Author (Michael Feilen)

  The History of PC-Express

  In 1991, a small group of Swedish programmers, headed by Robert J.
Andersson, started to develop a PC-version similar to the AMIGA mailbox-
software AMI-EXPRESS. PC-Express, programmed in Pascal, was born.

  I coincidentally received a copy of one of the first beta-versions of
PC-Express and immediately was impressed by it's capabilities. Therefore,
I contacted Robert Andersson and offered him to do some beta-testing for
this program and to establish a support center for the territory of
Germany.

  PC-Express more and more became a very helpful and in-depth tool for
mailbox SysOps. In January 1993, Robert Andersson handed over the entire
programming as well as the source code to Michael Irving who then con-
tinued to work on it's further development. In August 1993, Michael
Irving released the first official version, PC-Express 1.0, worldwide.
The final version released by him was PC-Express 1.16, and in August 1994
he quit and transferred the entire project to me. At that time, PC-
Express had already become a popular, frequently used and well-known
mailbox-software with almost 150 registered users (as well as many un-
registered ones).

  Due to the great demand for PC-Express, I decided to further improve
the program and my first major feature was to increase the number of con-
ferences available from 9 to 200. To do this, the entire user editor had
to be re-written since this section (the user editor) initially was pro-
grammed by a third-party programmer from Australia who used some unknown
source code. On December 1, 1994, I was finally able to release my per-
sonal initial version being PC-Express 1.18.

  Following several bug fixes and additional features, like global mail-
scan, global download, etc., on March 4, 1995 PC-Express version 1.19 was
released.

  During the past nine months I met a lot of other programmers who were
very enthusiastic about the program and supported me, both mentally and
physically, in PC-Express's further development. In this connection, I
would like to specifically mention the Danish and the Dutch support cen-
ters who contributed many external tools for PC-Express.

  I am currently working on a multi-language version of PC-Express,
meaning that all texts will be available in German, English, French, Dutch
and Danish. Another longer-term goal to improve PC-Express is to decrease
the program's memory requirement as problems in this respect were reported
by various Deskview- and ISDN-users. Additionally, Mugshot and myself are
collaborating on Doorkit in order to make doors run on ISDN-nodes and, for
future versions, I am planning to make the message base compatible to Jam
or Hudson formats. Hopefully, the next version will be available this
summer.

  Finally, I would like to thank The Doctor for establishing and rea-
lizing PC-EXPRESS MAGAZINE which certainly will be appreciated by all
users of PC-Express. Enjoy reading it!!!

  New things / Bugs / Idea's

  // Short explanation: New things, bugs and idea's are written random;
the name of the person who found it out is written between hooks //

  - There are two new Official Support Sites for PC-Express, one in Ame-
rica and one in Switserland, welcome! (Michael Feilen),

  - In the current version the "Files Reverse"-command only works for the
upload directory. We will fix this for all the directories in the next
update (v1.2) (The Doctor),

  - There are some users that want to see just how far they can type there
"Sent By"-string, so probably an end has to be visible (Caligula),

  - There are plans to start a PC-Express network(!), but first the cur-
rent message-base has to be replaced by JAM-base. You can use FrontDoor
or DBridge as a mailer en programs as Fmail, IMail etc. as a tosser. We
will let you know just how far we are, don't miss it! (Michael Feilen,
The Doctor),

  - We have heard a lot about making a tag-utility for PC-Express. It
seems that most people find it too much trouble to enter the names of the
files over and over, maybe they are spoiled with TheList, who can tell
(Caligula),

  - The new PCE-Kit is released (v2.4). This version has ISDN-support and
automatic UART or FOSSIL detection etc. Many functions are added to this
kit, you can read all about it in the accompanied documentation. There
are two versions, one with the structures of v1.18, one with v1.19 struc-
tures. We allready started coding on a bugfixed and updated function with
(very) nice extra's, for instance the use of shelling to DOS (ALT-J) and
use of the mouse. This version (v2.4.1) will be released shortly
(MugSHot),

  - When you are coding on a matrix that you want to start in Front-
End.bat, don't forget to fill ALL the data in the dropfile or else PC-
Express will hang with a runtime error 100 (MugSHot),

  - When hanging around on The Internet and viewing the newsgroups you'll
come to notice that there are newsgroups for a few BBS-systems but not
for PC-Express. We wonder if it's to anyone's advantage if we should try
to create a newsgroup for PC-Express too (The Doctor),

  - EALL-messages keep getting seen over and over by the same user (Power-
byte).

  - When files are uploaded and the extractor extracts the file_id.diz',
the user has to push "y" or "<enter>" for using the file_id.diz'. We
think that another option should be inserted (just as in /X), name-
ly: "(A)ll", so that all the file_id.diz' from the files that have been
uploaded should be used and also that users that automatically logoff
at the end don't have to wait for the questions: Use file_id.diz Y/n?
(Zen),

  - Caligula added to the prior remark that besides adding the (A)ll func-
tion, there also should be a function called (P)rivate, so that the
options would look like this: (Y)es, (N)o, (A)ll, (P)rivate ? (Cailgula),

  - A new command for PC-Express (like the one in /X): CP (Change Presets
File/Mail). When the users enters the command "cp", he/she gets to fol-
lowing screen:

         M    F    Z   Conference
001      *    *    *     <name>
002      *    *
003      *    *

Enter Flag Type: New [M]ail Scan, New [F]ile Scan, [Z]oom >:

In this way, users can deside for themselves from which conferences
they want to read the mail, see the files etc. In the current version,
when the users press N S G they'll get to see ALL conferences, even
if they have no interest in these conferences. With the [Z]oom func-
tion the user is able to gather all the mail and to let it be send
to him/her (Caligula),

  - When the user selects "a" and then selects "s" to let the files be
showed that are allready tagged, you've made a few spelling mistakes;
the line should be something like this:
" These are the files you've allready flagged:" (The Doctor),

  - When the user selects "f", here's an idea about a new command-line
that we can use:

99% [F]lag,S[c]rol,[D]wnld,Ne[w]Date,[V]iew,[G]etDIR,[Z]earch,[S]ysop,[y/n/ns]

We should try to combinate PC-Express with the arc-viewer and with an
tag-utility. The above mentioned command-line could then be used (Ca-
ligula, The Doctor),

 - When a user is hidden, please don't add the send-by string to his/her
upload (Caligula),

 - When a users enter Q to make him/her hidden and then LogOff, this op-
tion must be saved so that when the user LogOn the next time he/she will
still be hidden (Caligula),

 - The space for adding the "Sent By"-string in the usereditor is 1 cha-
racter too long (Caligula),

 - When the subscription date of the user has almost expired, show
him/her a textfile called "SubDate.txt", placed in your Node-directory
(Caligula),

 - When you are in chat mode (F1) and want to show the user some textfile
(Shift + F1) you better type the right path and name in one time because
if you make a mistake, PC-Express crashes! (The Doctor),

 - When you have configured PC-Express so that 2400 baud callers are not
allowed and someone Loggs on at 24k0, he/she also is thrown out (Caligu-
la).

  Source section

  Hi Coders, every month I will donate a source of mine to this magazine
so you guys can learn from me and with a little practise you wil be able
you make great tools for a great bbs system.

  I will begin with a few lessons for the beginner and then speed up the
learning process...it would also be a good idea to get your copy of PCEKiT,
a very easy to use kit which will help you to program in turbo pascal.
Also if you're experienced, PCEKiT is a great tool to make bbs utilities
with, it saves you a lot of time making your own kit and it is THE BEST
kit around. And last but not least it is updated regularly...

  If you have questions after my explanations or if you would just like to
ask me something, you can call the dutch pc-express team board or leave us
a message at our Internet address. And last but not least, I realize that
there are a lot of people on this planet who know much more about turbo
pascal than I do, so if I make a mistake don't kill me for it. (Feel free
to send your improvements so we all may benefit from your knowledge).

  Ok..that was the introduction, let us begin...

  My first topics are: BASIC THINGS and FILE SHARING

  BASIC THINGS

  I will here let the beginner get accustomed to a few basic functions of
turbo pascal/pcekit. All functions beginning with "pk" are functions of
PCEKiT.

  Writeln/pkWriteln
  - This function lets you display any line of text to the screen.
pkWriteln has a major advantage and that is that it can use MCI codes to
change colours e.g. to display an message in brigth white -
pkWriteln('|15Hello.'); Look in the pcekit reference file for all fore-
ground- and background-colours.

  Write/pkWrite
  - Same as Writeln/pkWriteln but now the cursor stops at the end of the
line, and not as with Writeln/pkWriteln jumping to the next line.

  Readln/pkReadln
  - You can compare this to INPUT from the BASIC language. With this
function you can wait for the keyboard to type something and press enter,
with pkreadln you may specify the length of the line to be read.

  Reset
  - With this function can open a file, being text or record (record will
be explained in the next issue) we'll reset text files only at this time.
Open a file with this function, and you are now able to read it.

  Close
  - As the word implies, after the files isn't of use anymore you must
close it, so another program may access it.

  While not eof(filevariable)
  - Reads until it comes to the end of the specified file.

  Now use these functions to make a program to read a keyboard input not
longer than 15 characters and writing it to a file. Below you will see my
piece of code...

  uses pkDoor,pkPort;

  var txt_f:Text; text:String;

  begin
   Assign(txt_f,'output.txt');
   pkclrscr; {clears screen}
   pkln; {give enter - move cursor down}
   pkReadln(Text,30,true); {Read line not longer than 30 - line is empty}
   Reset(txt_f);  Writeln(txt_f,Text);  close(txt_f);
   pkWriteln('Written "'+Text+'" to disk.');
  end.

  FILE SHARING

  - "File sharing is like driving a car, it doesn't matter if you are doing
everything right if someone else is fucking up..."

  What is File Sharing?

  File sharing means two or more programs use the same file for reading and/
or for writing. File Sharing becomes a very important factor when making a
util for multi-node-systems. (Remember that if you don't have a multinode
system that that doesn't mean other people also don't have a multi-node-
system!). You can imagine that if this isn't done correctly by one of the
involved programs, the other one gets a runtime error or just crashes your
harddisk, or better yet, crashes someone elses harddisk. (Think this is
funny? Wait until you get a message from Michael Feilen that he used your
tool and his hdd crashed...question: would the next update of pc-express
still run with your sysopname?) Ok, you get the picture, the "trick" is to
read or write a file fast and then close it, so another program can use it.

  Time for another "GOOD IDEA, BAD IDEA"

  GOOD idea :

  uses pkDoor,pkPort;

  Reset(txt_f);
    while not eof(txt_f) do
     begin
      readln(txt_f,text);
      pkwriteln(text);
     end;
    close(txt_f);
   pkWrite('End of Text File...Press a key');
  char:=pkReadKey;

  BAD idea :

  uses pkDoor,pkPort;

  Reset(txt_f);
    while not eof(txt_f) do
     begin
      readln(txt_f,text);
      pkwriteln(text);
     end;
    pkWrite('End of Text File...Press a key');
    char:=pkReadKey; {While you are waiting, my util is started from node #2
                     and crashes like hell trying to read the same file!}
  close(txt_f);

  The upper piece of source might seem like a good idea, but it can still
use some improvements... Look at the line Reset... - What would happen when
another program is still reading the file, and you are trying to reset it?

  To overcome this problem try this :

  var I:Byte;

  I:=0;
  pkShareAssign(txt_f,'c:\readme.doc',true,false)
   repeat
    Inc(I);  {Increase I by 1}
    {$I-} Reset(txt_f); {$I+} {I- disables IO checking, I+ enables IO checking}
  until (I > 20) or (IOResult=0);

   {I > 20 then file can't be reset - IOResult = 0, file has been reset, now
   you can read it}

  if I > 20 then
  begin
   pkWriteln('Can't read c:\readme.doc - file corrupt or being accessed.');
  end;

  Now you have a code that has a relatively good file sharing... The line
pkShareAssign, Assigns a file even better, with the last two booleans you
state whether the file can be read and/or written to. Because you don't want
someone else to write to that file which you are reading... Remember that
if the computer gods want something to go wrong, something WILL go wrong,
so always make sure you share files fast and neatly...that is if you want to
make a good util. Another possible error when a file can't be reset, is that
the file is missing, to overcome that problem use logic and check if it
exists like:

  if not pkexist('c:\readme.doc') then
  begin
   pkWriteln('Readme.doc does NOT exist..program halted.');
   halt;
  end;

  Well, that about raps up our first session... I would envise you to try
out these things and keep on trying until you succeed, you will learn and
then it's time to move a step upwards. A good way to learn is to use the
help of turbo pascal, read all sorts of functions and then let the help,
display a piece of source for you to look and modify. This will help you
gaining more understanding of turbo pascal. (for help use THELP.EXE inclu-
ded in your Turbo Pascal package, btw you will need TP 7.0 for PCEKiT to
work).

  In the next sessions things will get more difficult (easy when you get
the hang of it!) and I would like to advise you to practise as much as you
can, you can never do too much and remember that it is a hobby (which I
sometimes forget).

  In the next issue - A source on how to make a wall for pc-express and
much more! Hope to see you in our next issue!

  MugSHot.

  Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

  - The latest version that I've used is v1.16. Now I've got v1.19. Do I
    have to install v1.18 first before installing v1.19?

    No. Before installing v1.19, use the program "Convert.exe" that is
    available in the v1.18-archive. You can also download it from many
    BBS's. This program will convert the necessary files. After that you
    can upgrade your BBS to v1.19.

Ŀ
  Short Story

  The idea behind PCE-magazine.

  We all know that PC-Express is growing and becomes more powerfull each
day. When we e.g. observe the economy we come to realize that with a
coordinate and well structured approach things can develop much better
as they used to. If we take an overview over what we have accomplished
so far we see that there's a WHQ and some country-specific-HQ's that give
support to the users in their country and bring out idea's, comments etc.
When there's no HQ available in there country just a few users dare to
call international to receive information and utilities. The coordination
and the "one big happy family"-feeling leaves much to be desired. We think
that it's time to work on this problem and I will discuss some things
that are done or are to be done. First we wanted to make a magazine in
which all aspects of PC-Express were discussed so that everyone knows the
advantages and disadvantages of his system and that the problems that
occur are to be dissolved a.s.a.p. The following that we are going to do
is starting a PC-Express network. If everyone is enthusiatic about this
idea and wants to coorporate we are even starting this year. In this way
international mail and files are shiped at low cost to everyone that is
connected. Problems etc. should then be dissolved within a few days (ideal
situation offcourse). The current message base will be substituted with
JAM (and Hudson) message-base so that this network should work very
flexible for the SysOp and also other networks can be installed in his
(her) system. The Internet is growing and maybe we can start a newsgroup
for PC-Express so that communication is getting better and that communi-
cation can be established in several ways. Also the number of people that
respond to a question will be more numerous than before. We also could try
to make PC-Express Internet compatible. You see that there are many
idea's; we hope to realize them so that PC-Express can become a more dy-
namic, SysOp- and user-friendly international used BBS-system.
