I recently called a BBS for the first time. And, trust me, I provided
all the information truthfully except for my home phone number where I
provided 0000 as the last four digits. I had access to the general area
and I was able to read some of the public messages. A week later, I
called back only to find that I had been "locked out". So, I sent an
e-mail through the net to the sysop asking for the reasons for the lock
out. The sysop responded that I had not given my home phone number
which
is why I was locked out. I wrote him back saying that my home number is
an unlisted number and that I did not want to give my home phone number
to anyone other than my relatives. He replied that I must provide my
contact phone number to get back my access to his BBS. Obviously, I
neither wanted to give him my phone number nor access his BBS again. We
all have choices. Don't we all.

In my opinion, if the BBS is a public access BBS, then sysops should
allow everyone to log into the general area of their BBSes. Detail
personal information should only be required to access restricted
areas.
