Installation Steps:

I. Create the following directories:
    c:\shadow
    c:\shadow\monsters
    c:\shadow\chars
    c:\shadow\rooms
    c:\shadow\objects
    c:\shadow\messages

NOTE: Replace the drive with an appropriate drive for your system.

II. Create a file called 'SHADOW.PTH' in the directory that MAINBBS.EXE
is located. In that file, put the following line using your favorite
     editor:
     c:\shadow\

Copy the entire distribution into this directory (c:\shadow)
This will put all of the documentation files in the right plasce.

III. Change directory to c:\shadow\rooms
     1. Unzip the contents of ROOMS.ZIP into this directory

IV. Change directory to c:\shadow\monsters
     1. Unzip the contents of MONSTERS.ZIP into this directory

V> Change directory to c:\shadow\objects
     1. Unzip the contents of OBJECTS.ZIP into this directory

VI. Place the SHADOW.EXE file in the C:\SHADOW directory
     Place the SHADOW.TXT, SHADOW.DOC, INTRO.TXT, COMMAND.TXT
in the Shadow Directory as well (if they are not already there)

VII. Place the STARTUP.EXE file in the C:\SHADOW directory

VIII. Place the GOD.EXE file in the C:\SHADOW directory

IX. Modify using FALKEN's BBSCFG program the menu and add STARTUP.EXE
to the Menu. This is the program the users will run. SHADOW.EXE
      will be started by STARTUP.EXE.

Modify using FALKEN's BBSCFG program the menu and add GOD.EXE to
the menu. This is the program that sets a variety of things about
the game, acts as a character editor, etc. You can only specify
one person to use this program and that person should be someone
who is _on the staff_ and has played Shadow Realms long enough to
become an AVATAR. This is important! There are no 'setup' options
that you need to use here. Once you have an AVATAR (someone who has
made it to level 30) that you feel comfortable with, go into the
SHADOW directory indicated in your SHADOW.PTH file and create a
file that contains the account number of the user who you wish to
grant access to this program. This user must be someone YOU TRUST.
The file name you should use is CREATOR.TXT

If you have any questions about this... please do not hesitate to
post on FALKENet or log onto the support BBS (804) 436-6852.

Security:
Shadow Realms is protected by a two-level registration number. You will
need to create a file called SHADOW.KEY. This file MUST be in the same
directory as SHADOW.EXE. That file should contain the following:

FALKEN BBS Serial Number (Found when you bring up the software)
Registration Number
Your Name
Registration Number

An Example might be:

23423.000
3816523438
Mark D. Manes
1780024086

I will provide the registration numbers to you.

I had to do this to protect my investment
in the softwrae. This protection will keep the profit in Shadow Realms
and at the same time provide you with a protection system that will not
hinder the performance of your system software.

If you wish to run SHADOW REALMS on more than one system I ask for a $40
registration fee.

Finally: Delete any zip files that are hanging around in the SHADOW
directories.

NOTE: Lock ups WILL occur if the above steps are not completed
       correctly!

Please read the RELEASE NOTES. Sometimes things are in there that are
critical to proper operation.

Please read the SHADOW doc files completely.

---
Line Blockage Capability
---
It is recommended if your system only has a few high speed lines to block
them from use by Shadow Realms. People on the higher speed lines will have
an advantage over those who use the standard 2400 lines, as those with the
higher speed modems can react faster to situations.

To block a line--create a file called shadow.cfg in the same directory as
shadow.exe is located. In that file put the modem line number you wish to
block (each line on a line by itself). The only line you can not block is
line 0. That will be fixed in a later release if I am heckled enough.

---
Sysop Message Area
---
Sysops can have a file that can be viewed in the shadow realms startup
area. This file is called SYSOP.TXT and is intended for you to tell your
players about events/rules you have set forth. The file SYSOP.TXT must
be located in the same directory as SHADOW.EXE

---
Disk Usage
---
Shadow Realms requires appromiately 1 megabyte of disk space.

Common Problems
---------------
Q. The program locks up when I start it. I configured SHADOW.EXE on the
menu and it just doesn't work.
A. You configured the wrong executable for your menus.. use STARTUP.EXE
    instead.

Q. The menu appears, yet none of the documentation files do when I press
    the number for them.
A. The documentation files should ALL be in the same directory as shadow.exe

Q. Characters are not being saved right.
A. Be sure the directory CHARS exists. Be sure that the SHADOW.PTH file
exists in the same directory as MAINBBS.EXE does.

Q. Messages in the Town Crier's Office don't work.
A. Be sure that the MESSAGES directory exists in the same directory as
    SHADOW.EXE

Q. Why does my BBS slow down with heavy disk access every couple of minutes?
A. Shadow Realms is busy updating its global databases. These databases
must reside on your hard disk as they contain _valuable_ game information
that would be lost if they were in a RAM disk. I recommend using a
disk cache of some sort with FALKEN. SMARTDRV.SYS seems to work fine
with FALKEN and does help a bit. You might want to play around with
some of the other disk caching programs around. PC-CACHE from PC Tools
works _REALLY_ nice--but it had problems under previous versions of
    FALKEN BBS
