Installation Instructions for GAP BBS

DOS Based Installation
----------------------

The DOS Based Installation option will only work if the files are
installed from Floppy Disks.

Follow these instructions to create the Installation Disks:

Download GAPDOSIN.EXE to a temporary folder on your Hard Disk.

Run the GAPDOSIN.EXE program to extract the Files (6 files).

Have ready 2 formatted and blank 1.4 meg Floppy Disks.

Still within the temporary folder where the files were extracted,
type MAKEDISK.BAT and follow the Instructions to copy the
appropriate files and Volume names to the two Floppy Disks.

The Disks will be created as Follows:

        Disk 1 - Volume Label = "GAP1"
            INSTALL.CFG
            INSTALL.EXE
            INSTALL.F01

        Disk 2 - Volume Label = "GAP2"
            INSTALL.F02

Once the Installation Disks have been created, run INSTALL.EXE
from Disk #1.

If you are Upgrading from a previous version of GAP BBS, you will
most likely not want to install the MAIN, GEN, and HELP files. As
non of these files have changed, it is not necessary to install
them. If you do elect to install the Entire System, you will be
asked to confirm each file overwrite and it can be a bit tedious
to confirm or skip each file in your GEN and HELP directories.

To do a Selective Install, with the highlight in the "Install
Entire System" area, with the right cursor key, move the highlight
to NO. Then use the down cursor key to make the changes to the
    other Installation Options.

These are the Options you want:

      Install Entire System : NO
      Install DEFAULT Dir : YES
      Install MAIN Dir : NO
      Install GEN Dir : NO
      Install Help Files : NO
      Install QWK/REP System : YES
      Install GAPNET : YES
Install Doors : YES or NO (installs the Tourist door)
      Select/Unselect Files : NO

NOTE: Because the Installation program automatically invokes
GAPMENU, it is imperative that you run the Conversion program
PRIOR to installing the new program files. If you do not run the
conversion program first, you will likely end up with corrupted
    data files.

The Installation program will automatically run GAPMENU after all of
the files have been copied to your hard drive.

Windows Based Installation
--------------------------

The Windows Based Installation option is more straightforward than
the DOS option and is the preferred method of installing GAP BBS.

Download GAPWININ.EXE or GAPWINEX.EXE to your Hard Disk and run the
program.

If you are Upgrading from a previous version of GAP BBS, you should
select the Custom Installation Option and uncheck the Main, Gen, and
Help Files options since these files have not changed. It is not
really necessary to do this since any MAIN, GEN, and HELP files that
are already present will not be overwritten.

The Installation program will automatically run GAPMENU after all
of the files have been installed. Because of this, you need to
make sure that you run the Conversion program PRIOR to installing
    the new program files.

The basic Windows Installer (GAPWININ.EXE) contains only the DOS based
programs. The files that are installed are identical to the DOS based
Installer.

The Extended Windows Installer (GAPWINEX.EXE) contains all of the
DOS based programs as well as the Windows versions of GAP Maintenance,
GAP Menu, GAP Net, GAP Pack, and GAP Rebuild. This Installer will also
create a Program Group with links to the various Documentation and
Help files. This is the recommended Installation package to use if
you will be running your GAP BBS under Windows 95/98.
