I found two very active usenet newsgroups.

alt.railroad is for "real railroads" where they talk about the actual trains
and history.

Then REC.MODELS.RAILROAD is a very active hobbyist model railroad newsgroup.

I have both of these gated and have thousands of posts.

If you guys are interested, you can pick them up here at 2320/100 all I ask
is -NO TEST MESSAGES- it goes out over usenet and that is considered spam you
will get flamed.  My gate is fully functional two way and your post will hit
the net within minutes of it getting here.

I also have tons of other gated newsgroups.  My technology is pretty strong
in zapping sporge and spam.  It gets the worst of it but I have to tweak the
filters and with my medical stuff don't have time to.  Eye #2's surgery is
Wednesday.

rec.foods.cooking is the most popular group... have it here anyone's welcome
just crash me an 8 character session password and i'll set you up with that
and the areafix password will be the same.
